T. B. WYMAN.
BALLOT BOX. APPLICATION FILED :UNE t7. |918.
1,2772@ l 1 Patented Sept. 3, 1918.
M/CH/GA/V @ff/tomaia THOMAS B. WYMAN, or MUNisI-NG, MICHIGAN;
BALLOTrBOX;
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known ythat I, THOMAS B. WYMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Munising, in the county of Alger and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Ballot-Box, of rwhich the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a ballot box having novel means for locking, without the use of a padlock; and to provide a lock which effectively fills the only opening in the ballot box, when closed.
It is an especial object of my invention to provide a ballot box which complies with the laws of the State ofMichiganas to its construction and method of locking.
I attain the object of my invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a section on line I-I of Fig. 3 with the oiiicial seal applied over the ballot opening;
Fig. 2 is a top plan of the invention with the seal open;
Fig. 3 is a vertical ballot box;
Fig. 4L is a top plan of the ballot box cover in locked position; and
section through the Fig.r5 is a detailed sectional view of theV lock seal.
Like letters designate like parts in each of the views. n
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I provide a suitable ballot box F, having a segmental or half cover Gr. ony which is vmounted a lock C of any suitable construction having a keyhole E and a bolt D as shown in Fig. 1. I provide a suitable'removable cover H for the ballot box, and in cover H I provide a raised portion, or
vpocket A to receive lock C when the cover is in the position shown in Fig. 3. I further provide a ballot opening B on the opposite side of the ballot cover IL'this opening being of corresponding shape and slightly larger size than lock C, to receive that member when the ballot cover is turned about to the position shown in Fig. 4, which is the reverse of that shown in Fig. 3.
As shown in Fig. 1, a suitable seal S may be fastened over the ballot opening, the seal being engaged by suitable members I, such Specification of Iletters Patent.

as the Wires shown or a raised section of the box cover having a similar function. When the cover of the ballot box is in locked position, as shown in Fig. l, the keyhole E may be protected by a suitable seal K, as shown in Fig. 5, which is inserted through openings J in, lock C.
ballot box appears as shown the lock C is mounted on the segmental portion G of the bod-v of ballot box F. A suitable seal K is then secured over keyhole E by the proper oliicial as provided by the general election laws of the State. This method of locking the ballot boxprevents tampering with the ballots as the only opening into the ballot box is eiectively lled by the lock. My invention also does away with the old padlock system, while still complying with the laws of the State of Michigan, to meet which this ballot box is primarily designed, while offering absolute protection to the ballots.
What I claim is:-
1. A ballot box arranged to prevent tampering with the ballots, comprising a box having a segmental cover portion, a lock cover portion, a removable cover engaging over the entire upper portion of the ballot box, the said cover having a ballot opening, a raised pocket positioned to receive the lock, the ballot opening being shaped to snugly receive the lock when the removable cover is moved to reverse position, whereby the lock will close the only opening into the ballot box.
2. A ballot box designed to 4aiiord proballots being inserted through entire upper 'portion of the ballot box, said cover having a pocket corresponding in size with the lock and shaped to receive same, the cover also having a ballot opening shaped to receive one folded ballot, said ballot opening corresponding in shape Withthe lock and being of such size as to snugly'r'ee Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents ealch, by addressing the Commissioner ceive saine when the cover is moved to 1""- verse position with the ballot opening disposed over the integral half cover of the box to entirely close the box, and means on the cover for sealing the Vballot box, substantially as shown and described.
