Definitions
- the object of my invention is to provide a guide for scissors or shears, whereby they may be kept always equidistant from the edge of the material to be cut when used for cutting strips from cloth or paper.
- This guide is so constructed as to be capable of adjustment to strips of diiferent widths, and may be detached when not in use.
- My invention also embraces a device for attaching this guide to the shears in a convenient manner. Reference to the drawing will illustrate it fully.
- the arm I may be attached in several ways to the shears, as by screwing it into a hole tapped in the blade or into the rivet-hole. It may alsobe secured as shown in the drawing, which, as it will enable the device to be attached to any scissors, I consider preferable.
- the end of the arm b is bent in the form of a V, into the jaw of which the lower blade of the shears is set.
- the end of the arm is then bent (see 'i) so as to extend back to the handle of the lower blade, where it is held in a socket, f, attached by a thumb-screw, g, to said handle.
- This extension of the arm is made of spring metal, and is bent sufficiently to keep it in its place in the socket, while it can be easily slipped out and removed, if desired.
- the socket f may be cast on the handle in process of manufacture, if desired.

The object of my invention is to provide a guide for scissors or shears, whereby they may be kept always equidistant from the edge of the material to be cut when used for cutting strips from cloth or paper. This guide is so constructed as to be capable of adjustment to strips of diiferent widths, and may be detached when not in use. My invention also embraces a device for attaching this guide to the shears in a convenient manner. Reference to the drawing will illustrate it fully.
cloth from curling. This may be constructed of wire and attached to the flange 01, extendin g over the plate, and sufficiently distant from it to allow the cloth to pass between them. The arm I) may be attached in several ways to the shears, as by screwing it into a hole tapped in the blade or into the rivet-hole. It may alsobe secured as shown in the drawing, which, as it will enable the device to be attached to any scissors, I consider preferable. The end of the arm b is bent in the form of a V, into the jaw of which the lower blade of the shears is set. The end of the arm is then bent (see 'i) so as to extend back to the handle of the lower blade, where it is held in a socket, f, attached by a thumb-screw, g, to said handle. This extension of the arm is made of spring metal, and is bent sufficiently to keep it in its place in the socket, while it can be easily slipped out and removed, if desired. Instead of being attached to the shears by a thumbscrew, the socket f may be cast on the handle in process of manufacture, if desired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In combination with a pair of scissors, the arm b, guide 0 sliding thereon, and clothholding device 0 attached to said guide, all arranged substantially as set forth and shown.
2. In combination with said arm b, the extension 1' of said arm and socket f, whereby it is attached to the scissors, substantially as set forth and shown.
WILLIAM H. S. LAWRENCE.
