Be it known that I, FILiNK CI-IrLnnRs, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Carterville, in the county of Williamson, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Fence-Post; and I do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates'to a new and useful fence post, and particularly to an improved anchoring means therefor, whereby the post may he held rigidly in an upright position.

One of the objects of the invention is to provide a fence post comprising simple, etlicient and practical features of construction, particularly features forming part ofthe anchorin means.

One o the features of construction is the provision of a fence post angular in cross section and having its lower end split whereby the flanges of the post may be bent outwardly, in combination withrmeans connecting said outwardly bent portions and the body of the fence post, in order to brace the post.

A further feature of the invention is the provision of additional braces having anchoring means embedded under the surface of the soil.

Another feature of the invention is to provide a fence post consisting of two strips, one disposed edgewise at right angles to the other, in 4combination with means for securing the two strips together, the upper end of one of the strips being twisted, and bolted to the other, whichk other strip at its lower end, being provided with al right angle part, whereby the post may be anchored in the ground.

In practical fields, the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.

The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a View in perspective of the improved fence ost and its anchoring means, constructe in accordance with the invention.

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of another form of fence post, showing the same constructed of two strips, one disposed edgewisek at right angles to the other.

F ig. 3 is a View in perspective showing a fence' post, showing the saine constructed of two strips, one disposed edgewise atiright angles to the other, showing the strip which is disposed edgewise at right angles to the other, twisted at its lower end, to provide a right angle extending anchoring arm.

Referring more especially to the drawings, particularly Fig. 1,1 designates a fence post, which consists of a barv or standard angular in cross section, Vhere the right angle flanges or parts of the standard or post join, lthe lower end of the post is slitted or severed, as shown at 2, and the right angle parts or flanges are bent'to extend laterally and at right 4angles to each other, asshown at 3, thereby forming arms All. Secured to the outer ends of the arms ilby means of bolts or the like 5 and extending at right angles to the arms are strips 6,

the adjacent ends of which are secured to-4 gether by the bolts or the like 7. Also secured to the strips 6 by the bolts 7 is a brace bar or strip 8, the upper end of which is in turn secured by a bolt 9 to one of the right angle parts of the post or standard. Byy the provision of the anchoring means consisting of the arms 4, the strips 6 and the brace strip to be embedded under surface of the soil, the post or standard may be held firm or rigid. However, to insure rigidity or rmness, brace rods 10 and 11 are secured by bolts or the like l2 to the right angle parts of said post or standard, and in plan view these rods extend at right angles to each other. The rods 10 and 11 extend downwardly toward the soil and have right angle extending parts 13 to which the plates 14 are secured by the bolts 15.l These plates and portions of said rod are designed to be embedded under the surface of the soil, thereby securely bracing the post.

In Fig 3, the post 16 consists of the two strips 17 and 18, the strip 17 being arranged edgewise at right angles to the strip 18, thereby providing a post, which is T-shaped in cross section. Short lengths of wire 19 are disposed about the two strips or 'sec^ tions 17 and, 18, in order to conform to the T-shaped contour of the post, and have their ends united by being `twisted together, as shown at 20. Secured by means of a bolt 21`to the upper end of the strip 17 is a brace rod 22 siinilarto each of the'rods 10 and 11. This brace rod 22 is provided at its lower portion with the right; angle ext-ending part 23, to which a plate 24 is secured by means of rivets or the like 25. The lower portion of the strip or bar 17 is twisted, as at 26, and is extended at right angles, as shown at Q7, to form an arm. By means of this arm and the plate Q4 (which are embedded below the surface of the soil),.thelpost may be anchoredy securely in the ground.

In Fig. 2, the lower lportion of the strip or bar 18 is bent at 28 to form a right angle extending ar1n29, which may beembedded belowthe surface of the soil.

suitable manner, while either one of the posts in Figs. 2 and 3 may be arranged at spaced intervals throughout the fence to be constructed, so that the fence wires may be strung thereon.

The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is A fence post, comprising a standard angular in crossV section, the lower end of the standard, where the right` angle parts integrally join slitted', said parts bent laterally at right' angles to each other forming arms, strips secured to the outer ends of said arms and having their adjacent ends secured together, thereby bracing the arms, and providing a rectangular anchoring. frame, a brace strip connecting said frame and the standard, and brace rods for thestandard.
