To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL W. LoHSTRoH, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to adjustable and in-v terchangeable utensils, and its ,object is to economically produce av readily adjustable but tightly clamping holderfor scrubbingbrushes and the like, or other utensils having solid backs or handles, and which it may be desired to fasten at the end of a long handle for use on the Hoor, Walls or ceiling or in cleaning windows or other like operations.

Also, preferably, midway ofthe leneth of the main part of the plate that lies etween the inner ends of the slots 2 and the slots 8 is punched a large oval opening 9 preferably somewhat nearer the back edge 3 than it is to the front edge 6.

At the back, the parts of the plate between Vthe slots 2 are formed up while the alternate remaining parts aty the ,ends and in the middle are formed down; all .of these parts being formed substantially perpendicular to the main part of the plate. The formed-up parts constitute ears`11, while the formed-down parts constitute the middle clamping flange 12 and the clamping ears 13 near the ends.
IV ith vthe plate thus formed, the holes 5 and 7 near respective ends are in substantial alinement, and the slots 8 lie horizontally under the holes 7 immediately7 adjacent to the main part of the plate.
To complete this detail of the utensil, the tube 14 has it lower end suitably beveled and tted into the elliptical opening 9V in the plate, around which .the tube is soldered or otherwise suitablyiixed to the plate; it being understood that the elliptical opening 9 is of proper formation to admit the elliptical beveled lower end of the tube 14 snugly.
The movable clamping members 15 are simply flat metal -bars somewhatthicker than the plate 1, each having one end part -the corresponding s lot 8 in the plate 1 with the end part 18 proJecting down outside the iiange 10, the upwardly extending part 16 at the other end comes close to the inner side of the corresponding ear 11.
Screws 19 of the right diameter to lit snugly but turn freely in the alined openings 5 and 7 have threads throughout their lengths between the corresponding tongue 11 and the flange 10 whenv inserted through 5 and 7, and are screwed through the corresponding upright end parts 16 of the clamping members 15. At its rear end each screw has a suitable head 20 for conveniently turning it; and outside the rear of the corresponding tongue 11 and outside the front of the flange 10, each screw has radially through it pins 21 and 22, respectively, which limit the end-play of the screws 19. Thus, as each screw 19 is turned in one direction or the other, it
v16` bent up and provided with a threaded 1 `opening 17 and having the other end p art v18 bent down; these parts 16 and 18 lying causes the clamping member 15, with which it is associated as above described, to travel forwardly or rearwardly across the plate l bringing its downwardly extending forward end part 1S closer to or farther from the downwardlyextended flange 12 and tongues 13 on the rear of the plate.
Thus, the holder is provided with adjustable clamping means near each end which is adapted to grasp objects, as for instance, the back 23 of the brush 24 in Fig. 2, of varying widths and of any practical length, since the ends of the holder are entirely open. The tube'l; forming a ferrule that will t on a suitable handle of 'any desired length, it will be seen that the holder affords a means of mounting such utensils as the brush 24C on a suitable handle as the handle 25 in Fig. 2, for whatever use is desired of the utensil thus mounted. At the same time, the device is very simple, economical to pro duce, and efficient and reliable in operation..
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A holder having open ends and comprising an upstanding flange at one side, an upstanding tongue at the opposite side, a screw extending across said holder and journaled and held against end-play in said flange and tongue, a movable clamping member lying across said holder under said screw with an upwardly extending part through which said screw is threaded, and a downwardly extending part outside said flange, downwardly extending means on the side of said holder adjacent to said tongue to cooperate with the downwardly extending part of said movable clamping member, and means for mounting said holder on a suitable handle.
` 2. A holder comprising a main middle flat part with upstanding parts at opposite sides, and a downwardly extending part at one of said sides, a screwl lying across said main fiat part and journaled in and held against end-play in said upstanding parts, a movable clamping member lying across said main flat part withan upwardly projecting part through which said screw is threaded, and extendingthrough the upstanding part at the edge opposite said downwardly extending` parts, and extending downwardly past said opposite edge to coperate with said downwardly extending part, and means to mount said holder on a suitable handle.
8. As a new and improved article of manufacture, a body `for a holder composed of a single rectangular plate withi a flange bent up along one side, ,and having upper and lower openings through said flange near respective ends of the plate, and said plate having pairs of' slits cut into it from its opposite edge near respective ends of the plate, and having openings through the parts of the plate between the slits, these parts being bent up, and the alternate remaining parts of the plate being bent down, substantially as and for the purposesspecified.
