EDGE RULER FOR THE WIRE PART OF PAPER-MACHINES.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2'7, 1918.
Application filed April 17, 1918. v Serial No. 229,175.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDERS HENRIK GUS- TAFSON, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Tofte, Hurum, in the Kingdom of Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Edge-Rulers for the \Vire Part of Paper-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters 01' figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to edge-ruler for the wire part of paper machines and the like.
On the wire part of paper machines, pulp drying machines or water extracting machines, are used edge belts running on pulleys at each end of the wire part and resting with their underside on the edge of the wire so that they follow the movement of the same. The object of said edge belts is to prevent the pulp from dropping over the edge of the wire.
Although the edge belts follow the movement of the wire they are exposed to wear and at the same time they take up a considerable art of the breadth of the wire.
Accordlng to the present invention in place of the edge belts is used a stationar ruler, the lower edge of which consists pre erably of rubber or the like and touches the extreme edge of the wire part. In order to lessen the friction between the lower edge of the rule; and the wire part the ruler is provided with an arrangement for letting water trickle down the inside of the same.
()n the drawing is illustrated a preferred form of the invention.
Figure 1 is a partly sectional view of part of a side ruler as above described, and Fig. 2 is a section of the ruler.
The ruler 1 consists of metal and along its upper edge. is welded to a metal tube 2 the inner side of which is provided with a large number of small openings. Along the lower edge of the ruler 1. is fastened a strip or band 4 of rubber or the like, the fastening device 3 being adapted to press the lower part of band 4 inward, so that the lower edge of said band projects a fraction of an inch in front of the lower edge of the ruler.
In the water distributing tube 2, at the upper edge of ruler 1 and co-axially with the same is located a tube 5 of smaller diameter through which is conducted water to the water distributing tube without causing internal pressure in the latter. The water supply is regulated by means of cock 6 (Fig. 1), and is so controlled that a steady flow of water goes through the small borings in tube 2 and trickles down the inside of the ruler. During the working of the machine the ruler is so adjusted that the lower edge of the ruler band ust touches the wire cloth, the latter being accurately adjusted in a plane on the register drums.
I claim:
1. In combination with the wire partof a paper machine or the like, a stationary ruler along each edge of the wire-part, the lower edge of said ruler consisting of elastic material and touching the edge of the wire part, and means for supplying water to the inside surface of said ruler to lessen the friction between the ruler and the wire part.
2. In combination with the wire part of a paper machine or the like, a stationary ruler along each edge of the wire part, the
lower edge of said ruler' consisting of elastic material and touching the edge of .the wire part, a water supply connected to the upper edge of the ruler and means for causing water from said system to trickle down the inside surface of the ruler to lessen the fric tion between the ruler and the wire part.
3. In combination with the wire part of a paper machine or the like, a stationary ruler along each edge of the wire cloth, the lower edge of said ruler consisting of elastic material and touching the edge of the wire part, a perforated water distributing tube attached to the upper edge of said ruler a water supply tube inside said distributing tube and means for controlling the supply of water to the distributing tube in such a manner, that no pressure 1s created in the same.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have s gned my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANDERS HENRIK GUSTAEFSON.
Witnesses! C. VORMAN, M. W. KAHRS.
