Specification of yLetters Patent. y Patgnted All@a 27, 1918 l VApplication filed June 14, 1916.- Serial No. 103,672.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, DE VER H. WARNER, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Bridgeport, Fairfield county, State of Connecticut, have invented.-
possible to use clasps including steels orstifl-` eners tapering in width from the bottom upward, with the greater width at the bottom because the construction of the laced in front corset would necessitate the locating of such clasp to one side of the middle of the kfront of the corset. As one of the purposes of such form of clasp is to give the greatest strength Y wherethe greatest strain 1s, viz., over theV abdomen, particularly in the case of corsets for stout wearers, such purpose would not be served by the placing cfa broad ended steel or steels to one side of the said middle line. By my invention I provide a corset wherein the utility ofsuch broad Aended steels is fully taken advantage of, lresulting ink a much stronger and more eiiicient structure of the type than heretofore.
In the following I have described,'in connection with the accompanying'drawing, a corset illustrating a way of practising my invention.
rIhe drawing is a front elevation of a portion of a corset showing one embodiment of my invention. f
In the form disclosed 1 indicates the body of the corset, provided at one side ofy the opening with a stiffening strip 2, a row of eyelets 3 .and a clasp member 4 of uniform width throughout its length. 5 indicates a clasp member adapted to coperate with clasp member 4, the latter being provided with studs 7 to receive eyes 6 on clasp member 5. Clasp member 5 tapers outwardly from top to bottom being widest Vat the bottom. On the other side of the front opening is a stifening strip 21, arow of eyelets 31, a straight sided boning steel 41 and a honing steel 51 similar in shape to clasp member 5 and likewise tapering outwardly from top ito bottom andbeing widest at the bottom.
4 and 5 are adapted for fastening the sides of the corset together when in position on the body of the wearer. Where the skirt 9 Vof the corset extends below the respective Vstiffening strip the eyelets 8 may be con tinued, hooks 10 and eyes 11 being provided on the extended portion to assist in fastening the corset. i
It will be noted that the lacing 8 is in the middle of the front of the corset and that the broad ended clasp member 5 and the broad ended honing member 51 are equi-distantJ from said middle line, the clasp member 4 and boning steel 41 also being in relatively similar positions on each side of said middle line, so that the strain is evenly distributed on both sides and over the abdomen, the greatest strength being in the position of greatest strain.
inforcing or sti'lfening strips that no undue thickness or bunchmcss occurs at any point. Furthermore, the 'pressure upon the abdomen of the wearer is distributed over a ecmparatively large area and'is not localized at one point or without pressure upon the ab-V domen at allfas heretofore in laced in front corsets. In fact I have produced a combined abdominal support and laced in .front corset.
It is obvious that the details of construction may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention and Ido not, therefore, restrict myself to such details further than the scope of the appended claim demands.
I claim.
A laced in front corset, having a lacing arranged in the middle of the divided front ofthe corset, a broad ended clasp member and a similar broad ended honing. member located on opposite sides of said lacing and equidistant from the middle line of thedivided front, and a clasp member and a boning steel member also kin relatively like p0- sitions on eaeh side of said middle line, the combination and arrangement being Such that the Strains in use are evenly distributed on both sides and over the abdomen of the wearer, substantially as set forth.
In `testimony ,whereof 'I have Signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
DE VER H. VTAR-NER.
