WNITED STATES PATENT UFFIQE.
ALFRED P. LOHMA NN, 0F AKRON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE B. F. GOODRICI-I COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
LADDER-FOOT.
Application filed February 21, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be, it known that I, ALFRED P. LOHMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron,-in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladder-Feet, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to pivotally-jointed anti-slipping ladder feet, and more specifically to those of the universaljoint type. Its object is to provide a device of greater durability and simplicity, and of less expensive construction, than those heretofore proposed.
Of the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lower portion of a ladder provided with feet em bodying a preferred form of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of one of the ladder feet and the ladder rail to which it is attached.
In the drawings, 10, 10 are the side rails and 11 is one of the rungs of a ladder. In
its preferred form, as shown, my improved,
ladder foot comprises, first, an attaching bracket consisting of a pair of flat metal bars or'straps 12 adapted to embrace the lower end of the ladder rail and attached thereto by a pair of bolts 13 connecting the two straps, said bars having on their lower ends two hemispheres 14, 14 forming a ball head; and secondly, a lower or tread section having a socket 15 formed between a pair of nesting cup- shaped plates 16, 17 together with a cupshaped tread-member l8 composed of vulcanized soft-rubber com- .pound, preferably reinforced with layers of fabric 19.
The lower part of the socket is a hemispherical depression 20 formed in the middle of the lower or inner cup-shaped plate 17 and supporting the ball head 14, 14, and the upper part of said socket is a spherical segment or flange 21 formed on the upper or outer cup-shaped plate 16 and provided with an upper mouth or circular opening somewhat larger in diameter than the width of the bars 12. The two cup-shaped plates are connected by suitable fasteners, such as rivets 22, and the rubber tread-member 17 is clamped between the two plates. The two bars 12, which are spread apart and parallel in their upper portions, converge down- Specification of Letters Patent.

shown for receiving the ladder rail. Then the rubber tread-cup 18 is inserted within the upper plate 16, the lower plate 17 is inserted within the tread-cup, and the two plates are riveted together, which makes the device complete and ready for use.
I claim:
1. A ladder foot comprising an attaching bracket provided with a head constituting a member of a pivotal joint, a pair of plates forming between them a complemental pivotal-joint member or socket embracing said head. and an anti-slipping tread-member secured between said plates.
2. A ladder foot comprising a bracket adapted for attachmentto the ladder rail and formed with a ball head, a pair of plates forming a socket embracing said head, said ball and socket constitutinga universal joint, and a rubber tread-member clamped between said plates.
3. A ladder foot comprising a pair of nested cup-shaped plates secured together by fastening devices and forming the socket member of a ball-and-socket joint, a cup shaped rubber tread-member clamped between said plates, and an attaching bracket having a ball head occupying said socket.
4. A ladder foot comprising a tread section having upper and lower plates forming the socket member of a ball-and-socket joint, the upper plate having a circular opening to said socket, an anti-slipping tread on said tread-section, and an attaching bracket comprising a pair of bars whose upper portions are adapted to embrace between them the ladder rail, said bars converging downwardly to a neck, and a pair of hemispheres forming a ball head in said socket and adapted to be assembled with the upper plate by passing said bars singly, upper ends foremost, through the opening in said upper plate.
A ladder foot comprising a pair of 11est ed cup-shaped plates forming a spherical socket member open at the top through the upper plate, an interposeci cup-shaped rubhei' tread-member, fastening devices securing: said plates together and an attaching bracket comprising a pair of bars spread apart at their upper ends, eonverging townwai'diy and jeined together at a neck, and having hemispheres at their lower ends foiiningg :1 ball head in said socket.
in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of Febiuzny 1917.
ALFRED P. LOHMi-LNN.
