WILLIAM C. ROGERS, 0F FORT SHERIDAN, ILLINOS.
SUPPLEMENTAL STOCK FOR SMALL-ARMS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Augf, 1918.
Application filed May 4i, 1918. Serial No. 232,497.
To all whom z'z may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. Roenes, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Sheridan, in the State of Illinois, have invented Ynew and useful Improvements in Supplemental Stocks for Small-Arms, of which the following is a specification.
The invention has for its principal purpose the provision of a supplemental stock for small arms, such as pistols, revolvers and the like, whereby such small arms may be converted into carbines.
The supplemental stock comprises an open frame designed for attachment to the stock of the small arm, the frame being formed in two sections which are hingedly or pivotally connected together, so that the frame may be broken substantially at the longitudinal center of the combined unit, that is the framev and its attendant small arms unit, so that the device when not in use, may be folded up to require but a small amount of space. Carried by the frame, there is a rear sight, the support for which may be folded down against the frame or elevated to a position at right angles thereto, the support having associated with it a sleeve member designed to securely hold it in either of these two positions. The rear sight is ad justable vertically on the support to provide for its proper regulation with reference to the fore sight when it is desired to shoot a prescribed distance.
The invention is illustrated and described in a specific embodiment, to which, however, it is not to be restricted. r,The right is reserved to make such changes or alterations as the actual reduction to practice may suggest, in so far as such changes' or alterations are compatible with the spir t of the subjoined claims.
The same numerals of reference designate the same parts throughout the several views of the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing the application of the invention to .a small arm of the automatic type, the pos1 tion of the whole unit when folded being indicated in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of the from above in Fig. l. the line 3-3 of open frame, looking Fig. 3 is a section on Fig. 2.
Fig. t is a section on the line 1 -4c of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a detail view partly in elevation and partly in section showing the rea-r sight support in elevated position.
Fig. 6 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation looking at the sight and its support from the rear.
Fig. V7 is a detail sectional view similar to the section lshown in Fig. 5 but showing the sight support in lowered position.
Fig. 8 is a section on the line 8-8 of Fig. 6.
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the rear sight per se.
Fig. l0 is an elevational view of the sleeve member employed for retaining the sight support in either elevated or lowered position.
Fig. 1l is a Fig. 10.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, it is shown applied to a small arm l of the automatic type and provided with the usual stock 2 from which one of the wooden hand grips has been removed and replaced by a stamped metal hand grip 3 which is appropriately secured to the stock 2. The supplemental stock comprising a part of the invention is attached between this stamped metal hand grip Y 3 and the stock 2. Ylt is made preferably of tubular material, and the ends which are secured to the hand grip are flattened as indicated at i and 5, so that appropriate screws 6 may serve to attach the stock to the hand grip and secure it and the latter to the stock of the small arm l. Being made as shown, the supplemental stock constitutes an open frame and comprises the sections 7 and 8, the latter being appropriately formed at its eXtreme end for comfortable engagement with the shoulder of the user. The section 8 is designed to be folded over against the section 7 and the arm to which the latter is attached, when the device as a whole is not in use and the means permitting this folding over comprises a unique hinge connection about to be described. Since the supplemental stock is formed of tubular material, the unique hinge members are contained within the same. ln each leg of the section 7 there is carri-ed a plug 9 which is rigidly held therein by a transversely disposed pin 10. The plug 9 projects beyond the end of the leg and in this projecting end carries a link 11 which is rectangular in cross section and pivotally engages with a pin 12 which is inserted section on the line 11-11 of Vplugs 9, the sleeve members 16 thev ends Y remote from those Y movement.
. gaged from the pins 19 transversely through the plug 9 andfcrosses. a recess cut in the end of the latter and into which one end offthe link 11 is inserted. Both legs of the section 7 are thus provided and the two legs of thesection 8 engage the rear ends of these hinge members each of which is' in the form of a -plug member 13 slidably held in the leg of the section 8. At one end the plug 13 is reduced in diameter thus providing a shoulder 14E and at the extremity of this reduced portion a transversely disposed pin 15 is inserted, crossing a slot formed in the end of the plug and pivotally engaging the rear end of the link 11 which enters the slot. Since the plugs 13 are movable longitudinally in the legs of the .section 8, the latt-er may be moved longitudinally with respectto the section 7, soV that the extreme ends of the legs of the section 8 may be made to engage over the projectinor ends of the plugs 9, and means is provided for retaining them in such an engagement. This means comprise sleeve members 16` carried by the legs of the sectionY 8 on Ywhich they are permitted a limited longitudinal movement and also a limited amount of angular movement, pins 17 being inserted in the legs of the sections 8 and projecting into and out of the latter, the outwardly projecting portions Yentering rectangular shaped openings 18 whose length describes the amount of longitudinal movement permitted the sleeves and, whose width describes the amount of angular movement. lVhenthe legs of the section 8 are made to engage the projecting ends of the to engage pins 19 carried by the legs of the section 7 and to this end the sleeve members are formed with bayonet slots 20 at adjacent where the openings 18 are formed, the transverse portions of the bayonet slots being diagonally disposed, so that when the limited angular movement is imparted tothe sleeve members 16V they may be moved slightly in a longitudinal direction during such angular Obviously this is for the purpose of having the `connecting legs of the` two sections of theY supplemental stockA drawn tightly together. When the sleeve members 16 are engaged with the pins 19, the two' sections of the supplemental stock. are secured together in extended position, butwhen the sleeve members are disengaged' from the pins 19,V it is for the purpose ofV permitting the section 8 of the stock to be Vfolded over' as shown in dotted flines in Fig. 1. This is made possible because of the plugs13 being slidable in the legs of the section 8. With the sleeve members disenthe section 8 maybe drawn away fromthe section 7, the legs of the former section being disengaged from theprojecting ends of the plugs9, and the Ypleas 13 Vmounted and for are rdesigned l sliding towardthe ends of the legs of the section 8 until the shoulders 14 abut the inwardlyV projecting ends of the pins 17. Thereupon the section 8 may be folded over as described, since the links 11 provide the necessary hinged connections for this purpose. Y
On the upper leg of the section 7, there is carried a rear sight support 21 which is made arcuate inv cross section and formed at one end withears 22 upper leg of the section 7 and are carried thereby on the pins 23.* support is alinementwith its length and further provided with a tongue 25 at right angles to its length., ASince the sight support is designed for elevation to a right-angular position with reference to the attendant leg of the section 7 on which it is mounted, a slot 26 is the leg of the section 7 through pivotally sight support is elevated as described.V In
elevated position the tongue 25 is brought against the leg of the section 7 and in order that the sight support may be locked in thisY elevated position a ring member 27 is provided. This rounds the leg on which the sight support is a specified portion of its periphery is expanded beyond the normal radiusy of the ring, thus providing' a cam portion 28. sothat it simulates an S in cross section, so that there is provided an outwardly projectingA bead or corrugation 29 and an in wardly projecting bead or corrugation '30 which are restricted only to the cam por'- tion and exist in no other part of the ring. The tongue 2dr-Vis recessed on its end face so as to leave aprojection 31 at its extreme end while the tongue 25 is recessed on its upper aceto leave a similar but oppositely disposed section- 32 -on its extreme end. V hen the sightsupport 21 is elevated, the tongue 25 lies against the leg ofthe section 7 on `top ofthe latter and the ringmember 2 may be movedV longitudinally along the leg when the highest part of the cam portion 28 may pass over the end of the tongue. Thereafter Van angular movement imparted tothe ring member 27 will cause the lower part of the cam portion to be brought into contact with the upper 'edge ofthe tongue 25, and the projection 32 of the latter will be contacted with by the inner face ofjthe corrugation 29. YContinued angular movement imparted to the ring member 28 will serve to eect a rm clamping operation of the tongue 29 and the projection -32 will preclude thepossibility of any longitudinal movement of the ring, so that the sight sup- The sight support 21 is which straddle theV rlhe sight'Y provided with a tongue 247m This cam portion 28 is crimpedring memberloosely sursecured in the lower position in substantially the same way. When folded down against the leg of the section 7, its tongue 24: is brought to a position where it may be engaged by the cam portion of the ring 27, but in thfs instance the projection 31 of the tongue engages against the outer face of the corrugation 30, thus securing the sight in lowered position and retaining the ring 27 in position in substantially the same way that it is retained when the sight support is in elevated position.
Adjacent the upper end the sight support is provided with a longitudinal slot 33 and the rear sight 34 is provided with a transversely disposed rib 35 which slidably engages in this slot, the sight support being counter-slotted on the front face so that there may be carried by the support a block member 35 provided with a screw stud 36 which projects through a hole 37 formed in the rib 35 and in the sight and receives against the rear face of the latter a lrnurled or milled nut 38. The sight support 33 adjacent the longitudinal edges of the slot is suitably calibrated to permit the intelligent adjustment of the sight relative to the sight support for the obvious purpose of regulating the sight for the shooting of various distances.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, it is believed that the construction and operation of the invention will be clearly apparent and further description is, therefore, omitted.
