Description
HAMILTON MARTIN.
Improvement in Corn-Stalk Cutt ers:
No. 127,623. Patentedlune 4,1872.
I ZWitnesses a I. I
UNITED STATES HAMILTON MARTIN, OF ROUND GROVE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-STALK CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,623, dated June 4, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAMILTON MARTIN, of Round Grove, in the county of Whitesides and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn- Stalk Gutter; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a corn-stalk cutter, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use ,the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan view of my machine.
A represents a rectangular frame, of any suitable dimensions, provided with a cross-bar, B, in the center, which projects a suitable distance in front of the frame, and has the tongue 0 attached to it. Longitudinally through the center of the frame A passes a shaft, a, upon which, in each of the spaces formed by the cross-bar B, are placed two iron hubs, D D, provided with wooden spokes or arms E E. Each of these hubs is made in two pieces, bolted together, and thereby fastening the spokes or arms in their places. The knives G G are fastened to shoulders upon the ends of the arms E E; and the arms or spokes of each wheel are strengthened and braced by a circular rim, H, attached to the outside of each wheel. Thus four wheels combined in two form the cutter, with the knives attached to the ends of the spokes. Both wheels move on the axle a, and are held by pins 1) b, so as to widen or narrow, as occasion requires.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of two bisected hubs, D D, with spokes E E, knives G G, and circular rims H H, to form a revolving cutting-wheel for cutting corn-stalks, as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 26th day of March, 1872.
HAMILTON MARTIN. [L. s]
