Patented Sep. 5.1871.
No.gna,749.
UNITED STATES JOHN SCHLOSSER, OF PIQUA, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT .IN CLOD-CRUSHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 118,749, dated September 5, 1871.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN ScHLossER, of Piqua, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improved OlodOrusher; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, suliicient to enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, and to the letters and igures marked thereon.
My invention relates to certain improvements in clod-crushers or earth-pulverizers; and consists in arranging the rear set of cutters on a frame hinged to the front axle. Also, in making the cutters hollow, and of a diamond or double coned shape, the apexes of the cones being at the center of the cutters, through which their shaft or axle passes. It further consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more particularly described.
In the drawing, Figure lis a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section of one of the cutters.
A represents the frame-work of my improved machine, which is provided with a removable tongue or pole, B, and hooks d cl, to which the horses are hitched, and with a seat, a, for the driver. C C are hangers, depending from and secured to the frame A, and in these hangers a shaft, D, has its bearings. On this shaft, which is angular, except at its journals, are secured live (more or less) circular cutters, E, which are cast hollow, and have their sides beveled so as to present, in cross-section, an elongated diamond-shape, (see Fig. 3,) said cutters revolving with the axle or shaft. Two arms, b b, are hin ged to shaft D, and, extending backward, form bearings for a shaft, D', similar to the shaft D, and likewise provided with similarly-constructed cutters E, which are so arranged as to interlock with the cutters E on shaft D, thus forming a self-cleaning device and preventing clogging of the machine.
The advantage gained by casting the metallic cutters hollow is that they are better able to thoroughly perform the work, being lighter than if solid, and, at the same time, they are of the proper dimensions outside. By arranging the cutters E on the hinged frame and behind the .front stationary cutter-shaft, such clods as the front cutters only separate or divide are thoroughly pulverized by the rear ones; and by the hin ging of the frame a degree of elasticity or mobility is attained which great-ly facilitates the operation, especially on rough and uneven ground.
It is found in practice that my cutters perform their work better, being lighter and thus working easier, and are not so liable to clog as straight cutters, nor so liable to be broken or injured on rough and uneven land.
I do not claim, broadly, the hollow circular double-convex cutters; neither do I claim, broadly, the swinging frame, as I am aware that such have been used before, but
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination and arrangement, in a clodcrusher, of the frame A, tongue B, hangers O, cutters E E', shafts or axles D D', and arms b b, all as herein shown and described, for the purpose specified.
JOHN SUHLOSSER. Witnesses:
J F. MCKINNEY, S. S. MGKINNEY.
