AUGUST J. FREY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO BRASS GOODS MFG- 00., OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF YORK wrnn COMPRESSION-CLAMP Foe TUBING AND THE LIKE.
Application filed July 27, 1916. Serial No. 111,580.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST J. FREY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Compression-Clamps for Tubing and the like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction of compression clamps for tubing and the like and more particularly to devices of this general character which comprise a pair of clamping jaws, ears or brackets rising from the base or part carrying the lower jaw and an actuating cam mounted in said brackets and adapted to actuate a spring member carrying an upper clamping jaw for applying pressure to the tube or other object extending longitudinally of the clamps and between said ears o brackets. Compression clamps of this general character have heretofore been made of sheet metal.
The object of my present invention is to make it possible to utilize wire for the prin cipal parts of the construction thereby cheapening the cost of manufacture.
A further object of the invention is also to so construct the device from Wire that the parts will be capable of yielding in the compressing operation when the cam is actuated, thereby obviating the liability of the parts to become set or permanently distorted when used for clamping a tube or other object of larger than normal gage or thickness or for clamping one having abnormal resistance to compression.
To these ends my invention consists in constructing the upper clamping jaw, the body or base and the ears or brackets carrying the actuating cam from a piece of Wire bent as herein described, the ends of said wire terminating in the eyes in which the pintles of the cam are mounted.
The invention further consists in provid ing the wire with a turn or twist at the bottom of the part constituting the ear or bracket to permit the parts to yield under the actuating pressure applied to the cam.
The invention further consists in the details of construction as hereinafter more particularly described and then specified in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clamp constructed in accordance with my invention.
Patented Aug. 13, 1918.
Fig. 2 is an end view looking at one end.
Fig. 3 is an end view looking at the opposite end.
Fig. 4: is a plan view of the device.
j 1 indicates the upper clamping jaw, 2 the lowerclamping jaw and 3 the actuating cam, the latter being provided with two arms, as shown, for operation respectively in closing the jaws or in relieving them from pressure of the cam. The cam, as usual in the art, is preferably made of sheet metal as shown and is provided with pintles a by which it is mounted in bearings to permit it to turn.
According to my present invention the re maining parts of the device are constructed asfollows from a piece of bent spring wire having a loop at 1 to form the upper jaw. The wire. extends back in substantially parallel longitudinal parts 6 which, at the end, are bent into vertical loops 7 to form an opening for the tube and are then returned as two longitudinal members 8 back to a point coinciding substantially with the upper jaw 1. At this point a reverse loop ortwist 9 is introduced and each part of the wire is then extended up as an ear or bracket 10 each end terminating then in an eye 11 in which the pintles of the cam are mounted. To form a rest or seat operating as clamping jaw 2 the two members 8 at the point under the jaw 1 may be tied together by a piece of sheet metal or by other means. Preferably the parts 8 are continued for some distance close to one another before spreading out to form loops 9 thereby affording a seat or rest for the tube analogous to the base part of the ordinary sheet metal compression clamp. The loop 9 provides the spring action which permits yielding to take place when the cam is employed for clamping thick tubing and thereby prevents the clamp member from becoming set or distorted and therefore useless.
The ends of the pintles for the cam may be split and bent on the outer side of the eyes to prevent the ears or brackets 10 from spreading so that the cam will be dislodged from its support.
As will be seen, the parts 6 constitute spring supporting arms for the jaw 1 analogone to the sheet metal plate of the former construction and the parts 8 constitute practically the base of the device from which the cam supporting ears or brackets rise and upon which the tube or other object rests.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A compression clamp for tubing comprising a jaw actuating cam combined with a piece of wire bent to form an upper jaw, a base and cam supporting ears rising from said base, said jaw, base and cam supporting ears being integral, and said ears terminating in eyes formed in the wire, as and for the purpose described.
2. In a compression clamp for tubing, the combination with a pair of clamp aws and actuating cam therefor, of a piece of wire bent to form the upper 'aw and jaw supporting arm, as well as a ase and cam supporting ears and a cross or tie piece connecting two portions of the bent wire and forming the lower jaw of the device.
3. In a compression clamp for tubing and the like comprising essentially two clamping jaws and actuating cam therefor a piece of wire constituting a base portion and cam supporting ears, the ends of the wire terminating in eyes to receive the pintles of the cam.
4:. A compression clamp for tubing and the like comprising a pair of jaws and an actuating cam supported in cars or brackets, said ears being formed of a piece of wire integral with the wire forming the base and connected therewith by a loop or turn to provide a spring action as described.
5. A compression clamp for tubing and the like constructed from a piece of wire looped to form an upper compression jaw, arms for supporting said jaw, a base and ears rising from said base, the ends of said wire terminating in eyes and a compression clamp having pintles mounted in said eyes and adapted to engage the portion of wire carrying said upper jaw.
Signed at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, this 24th day of July, A. D. 1916.
