Specification of Letters Patent.
t,Ppatented Aug. 13, 1918.
Application filed 0ctob`er25, 1191?.1 Serial No. 198,530.'
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JUDsoN Coon, a eitizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake-Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is the provision of a brake shoe having a body or tread of cast metal reinforced by a wrought metal or steel back to which the key lug is secured,
the key lug to be fashioned from a blank cut and bent to shape and interlocking with the back and held in part by the metal of the body portion.
The invention consists-in certain novelties of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
rIhe accompanying drawing illustrates one embodiment of the invention constructed and the parts combined accordlng to the best mode of procedure I have so far devised The shoe is comprised of the cast metal tread or body portion A, the wrought metal or steel reinforcing back B, and the steel key lug C.
The reinforcing back has two recesses 1, 1, formed by removing parts ofthe metal, two slots 2, 2, and two anchoring lugs 3, 3, each made by cutting two spaced holes 4, 4, from the metal and depressing the metal between the holes so as to lie in a plane or space below the surface of `the back, as
.clearly shown by Figs. 3 and 4.
The key lug is made from a single rectangular steel blank by cutting away parts of the metal and bending other parts to pro- .vide a back or top 5, two sides 6, 6, with an opening 7 in each side for the passage of a key, four base portions, 8,8, 8, 8, and four attaching wings 9, 9, 9, 9.
The wings are passed through the slots 2, 2, `and the ends thereof then bent outwardly toward the recesses 1, 1, in the edges of the reinforcing back so they will lie in frictional contact with the bottom surface ofthe plate as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
Obviously two of the Wings are passed through each slot 2, and when bent they lie in planes parallel with the base portions S,
8, and securely anchor the key lug as a Whole to the reinforcing back.`
"The back is then bent to an arched shape preparatory to its `union with the body of the shoef The ends of the reinforcing back and the metal bounding the recesses 1, 1, are fashioned to present Abeveled edges 10 and 11 over which edges the cast metal i extends to more securely unite the back and thebody of the shoe. The cast metal also fills the recesses 2, 2, as shown at 12, 12, in Fig. 2, and likewise extends through the holes 4, 4, and over the top surface of the anchoring `lugs 3, 3, as shown by Fig. l, in section.
With theparts thus securely united a durable and e 'cient shoe is provided, which is relatively cheap and simple in construction, easily made and'eonsequently inexpensive in first cost. i
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. A brake-shoe comprising a cast metal body or tread, a reinforcing back provided with slots centrally and longitudinally thereof, a key-lug being substantially boxshaped in form consisting of a back, side members projecting therefrom, and provided with registering openings therein, the
extreme ends of said side members bent inwardlytoward each other forming substantially a rectangular frame atopposite ends of the back, and locking-wings extending laterally from the eXtreme ends of the side members and inwardly toward each other and adapted to be received in the slots in the reinforcing members, and having their ends bent and rigidly held by the metal of the body or tread portion.
2. A brake-shoe comprising a castmeta1 body or tread, and reinforcing back provided with anchoring lugs seated in the cast metal and having slots, a key-lug being subi stantially box-shaped in form consisting of :t back, side-members projecting therefrom of vthe side members and inwardly toward and `provided with registering openings each ether and adapted to be received in the therein, the extreme ends lof said side Inem- Slots in the reinforcing` members, and having;` 1U Y bers bent inwardly toward eachother, fermtheir ends bent und rigidly held by the metal 5 ing substantially a reetangil'fran at po'f the body er tread portion.
posite ends of the back, and locking-Wings In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. extending laterally from the eXtreme ends Y JUDSON COOK.
