To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. MINER, a citizen of the United States, residing inUhicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Im provement in Brake-Shoes for Railway-Cars, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to improvements in brake-shoes for railway-cars or other vehicles.
The object of my invention is to provide a brake-shoe of a simple,'eflicient, and durable construction capable of being cheaply and conveniently manufactured, which with a minimum weight of metalwill afford a maximum amount of wear or effective braking or retarding action, in which all parts of the shoe will be securely locked together and the cast parts reinforced or strengthened, so that when the shoe becomes worn thin there will be little danger of breakage and no danger of parts of the shoe in case of breakage becoming entirely disconnected and dropping down upon the track, and thus derailing or endangering the train, and in which the connection between the shoe and itsattaching-lug may be strong, safe, and secure.
My invention consists in the means I employ to practically accomplish this object or result-that is to say, it consists in a brakeshoe having a solid composite body. comprising a cast-metal portion, preferably of castiron, and a tough; soft, or wrought-metal portion, preferably of steel plate, provided with a series of divergent lugs or prongs extending at angles from the back portion of the shoe-body through the same to the front orwearing-surface thereof, saidtough or soft metal or steel plate member serving as a tough metalback for the shoe and preferably having the attaching-lug formed integrally therewith and forged, clamped, or pressed up to the required shape and the lugs or prongs of said tough-metal or steel-plate member, which extend through the body of the shoe from back to front, forming in part the wearing-surface of the shoe and serving to increase the frictional or retarding action of the shoe and also to strengthen the cast portion and to lock and tie all parts thereof together, the divergent prongs of the toughmetal plate portion also serving to chill the adjoining surface of the cast-ironportion, and thus to increase the durability. and wearing qualities of the shoe and the cast metal portion and the soft ortough metal plate por- .back for the shoe.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a back view of the brake-shoe embodying my invention. .Fig. 2 is a front view. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal section on line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail section on line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
In the drawings, A represents the cast-,
metal portion of the shoe, and B the tough, soft, or Wrought-metal or steel-plate portion thereof, about which the cast-i on portion A is cast, so as to intimately and perfectly unite the two portions A and B into one solid comosite mass. The tough-metal portion B is furnished with a series of divergent integral prongs b, stamped up from the steel plate and extending at different angles to each other through the body of the shoe from the Iront to the back, so that the front edges 11 thereofwill constitute a portion of the Wearing-surface D of the shoe during the Whole life of the shoe as it Wears thinner and thinner in use. The angle-prongs b or some of them are also preferably furnished with holes or openings 0 through the same, so that when the iron or cast metal is cast about the soft or steel plate portion B it may extend continuously from one end of the shoe to the other in one solid continuous mass through the prongs as well as on each side thereof or beyond the edges thereof. The prongs b are narrower than the tough-metal or plate portion B of the shoe, so that this plate B has a skeleton portion b to form a continuous tough-metal.
