1 '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN D. RISTINE and BENTON C. RownLL, citizens of the United States, and residents of Chicago, in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake- Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
Our present invention relates to the wearing blocks or shoes commonly used on railway rolling stock, and more particularly to brake shoes containing wear resisting inserts, and has special reference first to the provision of an improved type of shoe of the character referred to wherein the inserts are firmly anchored in the body of the shoe; second a shoe wherein the reinforcement of the lug is not only anchored in the body but also may be anchored to the rein forcement; and. third, an improved shoe wherein the dressing effect of the insert on the tread of the wheel is more evenly dis tributed across the tread surface.
The principal objects of our present invention are the provision of an improved anchorage for the wearing inserts, one which engages both the insert and the body of the shoe, and one which may serve as an anchorage for the reinforcement used for strengthening the attaching lug; the provision of an improved form of wear resisting insert which will not only distribute its dressing effect over substantially the entire surface of the tread portion of the wheel, but will also serve, in the event of breakage, to restrain. any portion of the insert or of the body portion of the shoe from disengagement and falling upon the track; the provision of an improved form of reinforcement of the attaching lug, and of anchorage for such reinforcement, in. order to prevent the shoe from becoming disengaged from the brake head and falling upon the track in the event of the fracture of the cast metal portions of such attaching lug, or the insert from falling upon the track should it in anywise become disengaged from the body portion of the shoe; together with such further objects as may be below disclosed.
In the attainment of the objects referred to. and gaining certain further benefits to be hereinafter mentioned, we have provided a construction, one embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is an elevational view, partly in section, illustrative of our invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the wearing face of the shoe of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken along the line- III-III of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of the reinforcement used for strengthening the attaching lug; and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the wearing face of a modified form of device.
Referring first to Fig. 1 it will be observed that in carrying out our invention we employ a body portion 10 which is here illustrated as an M. C. B. standard railway car shoe, though obviously our invention is equally applicable to other types of shoes, such body portion 10 being preferably made of relatively soft metal such as gray cast iron, a relatively hard insert preferably having portions such as are indicated at 11 and 12, and being made of metal such as white cast iron and as means for anchoring the insert 11 in the body 10, a pair of mem bers 13 and 14; engaging the insert portions 11 and 1.2 and such body 10, such members being preferably of steel, though they may be of such other tenacious ductile metal as may be conveniently available.
Referring now more particularly to Figs. 2 and 3 it will be observed that the insert portions 11 and 12 are preferably spaced apart a distance substantially equivalent to the width of one of them, as indicated at 15, and provided with off-set portions as indicated at 17 and 18, to the end that the entire tread portion of the wheel between the points indicated at 19 and 20 may be subjected to the dressing effect of such inserts. In order to prevent scoring of the wheel tread, the members 11 and 12 are preferably arranged in non-overlapping surfaces of revolution. As is most clearly to be seen in Fig. 3, the insert portions 11 and 12 have embedded therein at thetime of casting of such inserts, anchoring members 13 and 1 1, preferably having means for engaging the cast metal of the body of'the shoe 10, and preferably of irregular contour or having projections for such purpose, a convenient form of such anchoring members being that to the endthat illustrated :a modification of the I beams which we have illustrated in Fig. 3. To the end that they may most firmly hold the insert portions 11 and 12 in place in the body of the shoe, they should preferably follow substantially the contour of the inserts, andto that end-we have shown them as provided with off-set portions 21 and 22 (as is most clearly to be seen in Fig; 2) whereby they are centrally located in such inserts.-
On viewing Figs. 3 and 4, it will be seen that for the purpose of reinforcing the attaching lug 23- we make use of a strap 2st surrounding the top and sides of the keyway 25, the parallel sides 27 and 28 of such attaching strap 24 being here shown asprovided with reciprocally off-set portions 29 and30 each conveniently adapted to contact with one of the flange and Web surfaces of one of the members 13 and .14, and at the end to abut against oneiof the inserts 11 and 12, when the legs 27 and 28 are spread apart they may be snapped over the members 13 and 14, and, closely engaging them prevent the reinforcingstrap 24 from disengagement from the anchorage members 13 and14 and thus from the insert portions 11 and 12, the two members 23 and24l thus reinforcing each other when the body 10 is poured, and breakage of the lug structure thus-formed is prevented. -While'the members 11, and 12 are notnecessarily connected at their outer ends, as indicated at 31 and 32 (Fig. 2) we .find it expedient so to do, desirable for the purpose of preventing any broken away portion of the shoe body from disengagement therefrom, and convenient for the purpose of maintaining the strap 24- in position. during .the act of pouring the shoe...
Qn inspection ofFig. 5 wherein We have of our invention, it will be observed that :the structure here illustrated isin all essential respects similar to that illustrated in Fig. 2, save that the insert portions 11 and 12* instead of being I provided with off-set portions as indicated at 17 and-l8 in Fig. 2 are substantially straight throughout their length and. that therefore this structure presents this advantage over that of Fig. 2 in that. it is. not requisite to provide the anchorage members 13 and 14? with off-set portions. such as are indicated at 21.,and' 22in Fig. 2, in order to maintain such anchorage members'13? and 14 in central position in the inserts 11 and 12 though obviously the structure illustrated mostclearly in Fig. 2 is advantageous-in thatby reason ofthe off-sets. 17 and 18, the members 11 and 12 are more. positively restrainedfrom any possibility of longitudinal movement relatively to the body por- I-Iaving thus, described our invention, and illustrated itsusewhat We claim a -newand desire to secure by Letters Patent is the following:
1. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body portion and an insert comprising a plurality of substantially parallel portions spaced apart a distance substantially equivalent to the width of one of them and arranged obliquely in non-overlapping surfaces of revolution in the wearing face of the shoe.
2. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body portion and an insert comprising substantially parallel portions spaced apart a distance substantially equivalent to the width of one of them, said inserts being provided with oflset portions whereby they are restrainedfrom movement longitudinally to said body, and being arranged in non-overlapping surfaces of revolution in the wearing face of the shoe.
3. In a brake shoe, in combination, a relatively soft metal body portion, a relatively hard insert adjacent the wearing fare thereof, and a longitudinally disposed anchor wholly embedded in the brake shoe and engaging said insert and engaging said body throughout substantially the entire length of the shoe.
4:. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body portion, an insert adjacent the wearing face thereof, and an anchorreinforcing and engaging said' insert and said body, said anchor being substantially centrally positioned in said insert and having greater depth than breadth.
5. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body portion, a wearing insert having longitudinal portions extending substantially the entire length of the body portion, reinforcing members engaging said longitudinal portions and said body portion, said reinforcing members following substantially the contour of said portions and the longitudinal portions of said insert being arranged to contact with different non-overlapping portions of the tread of the wheel with whichthe shoe may be used and together contact with a width of tread substantially equal to the width ofthe shoe.
6. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body provided 'with an attaching lug of cast metal,a wearing insert, an anchor engaging said'wearing insert and said body, and a ductile metal member reinforcing said cast metal lug and engaging said insert.
7; In a-brake shoe, incombination, a body, a substantially horizontally flanged insert adjacent the wearing face thereof, an anchor engaging said insertand body, and a ductile metal attaching lug engaging said anchor and said-insert below the flanges thereof.
8. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body, an insert, an anchor engaging said insert and body, anda ductile metal lug engaging said anchor.

10. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body provided with an attaching lug of cast metal, a plurality of substantially parallel insert portions each provided with an an chor of substantially I formengaging said body, and a ductile metal member reinforcing said lug and engaging said anchors.
11. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body, a plurality of substantially parallel insert portions each provided with an anchor of substantially I form engaging said body, and a ductile metal attaching lug engaging said anchors.
12. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body portion and an insert comprising substantially parallel portions spaced apart a distance substantially equivalent to the width of one of them and connected at their ends, whereby the insert is restrained from movement longitudinally of the body of the shoe, the longitudinal portions being arranged to contact with different non-overlapping portions of the tread of the wheel with which the shoe may be used and together contact with a Width of tread substantially equal to the Width of the shoe.

In a brake shoe, in combination, a body portion, a longitudinally disposed wearing insert arranged throughout substantially the entire length of the shoe adjacent the wearing face thereof, and a separate anchoring member having cast engage- .ment with said insert throughout substantially the entire length of the insert, and with said body.
1 1. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body, an insert adjacent the Wearing face thereof, and a vertically and longitudinally disposed reinforcing member having an enlarged portion embedded in said insert and having cast engagement with the body of the shoe.
15. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body, an insert adjacent the wearing face thereof, a ductile metal lug, and a reinforcing member engaging said insert, lug, and the body of the shoe.
16. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body having a lug of cast metal, an insert adjacent the wearing face of the body, a reinforcement of ductile metal for said lug, and a reinforcing member engaging said insert, said lug reinforcement, and the body of the shoe.
17. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body, a longitudinally disposed insert having greater length than breadth having offset ends arranged adjacent the wearing face thereof, and a reinforcing member engaging said insert throughout substantially the e tire length of the insert, and engaging the body of the shoe whereby said shoe is stiffened.
18. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body, longitudinally disposed insert adjacent the wearing face thereof, and a rigid reinforcing member having an enlarged portion embedded in said insert throughout substantially the entire length of the insert and horizontally flanged for engaging the body of the shoe whereby said shoe is stiffened.

In a brake shoe, in combination, a body provided with an attaching lug of cast metal, an insert of greater depth than width a reinforcing member embedded in said insert and body portion and a separate ductile metal member entering and reinforcing said lug and engaging said insert and said reinforcing member.
20. In a, brake shoe, in combination, a body portion, a longitudinally disposed insert adjacent the wearing face thereof, and a separate laterally flanged anchoring member having an enlarged portion embedded in said insert throughout substantially the entire length of the insert.
21. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body portion, an insert adjacent the wearing face thereof, and an anchoring member embodied edgewise below the back of the shoe and having cast engagement with said body.
22. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body portion, an insert adjacent the wearing face thereof, and an anchoring member provided with an enlarged portion extending above the insert and having cast engagement with said body below the back of said body.
23. In a brake shoe, in combination, abody portion, an insert adjacent the wearing face thereof, and an anchoring member of irregular contour and of greater depth than Width having cast engagement with said body.
24:. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body portion, an insert adjacent the wearing face thereof, and an anchoring member provided with a flanged portion embedded in said body and a second flanged portion embedded in said insert.
25. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body provided with an attaching lug of cast metal, a pair of substantially parallel strengthening inserts provided with flanges and a separate ductile metal member reinforcing said lug and engaging said inserts.
26. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body provided with an attaching lug of cast metal, a pair of longitudinally disposed strengthening inserts provided with flanges and a separate ductile metal member reinforcing said lug and engaging said inserts.
27 A brake shoe comprising, in combination, a'body, an insert a reinforcing member partially embedded therein having a plurality of flanged portions, and an independent attaching lug engaging said reinforcing member.
' 28. A brake shoe comprising, in combination, a body, an insert a reinforcing member partially embedded therein having a plurality of flanged portions, and an attaching lug of ductile metal engaging said reinforcing member.

31. A brake shoe comprising, in combination, a body, an insert a reinforcing member partially embedded therein having a plurality of flanged portions facing each other and an attaching lug engaging said reinforcing member.
32. A brake shoe comprising, in combination, a body, an insert a reinforcing member partially embedded therein having a plurality of flanged portions facing each other and an independent attaching lug engaging said reinforcing member below said flanged portions.
33. A brake shoe comprising, in combination, a cast body and a plurality of strengthening inserts of ductile metal of greater height than width and longitudinally disposed therein, each of said strengthening inserts supporting a wearing insert.
34. A brake shoe comprising, in combina tion, a cast body and a plurality of strengthening inserts of ductile metal of greater height than width arranged longitudinally edgewise therein, the lower edges of said strengthening inserts being above the wearing surface of the shoe, and each of said strengthening inserts supporting. a wearing insert.
35. A brake shoe comprising, in combination, a cast body and a plurality of strengthening inserts of ductile metal of greater height than width arranged longitudinally edgewise therein, the lower edges of said. strengthening inserts being above the wearing surface of the shoe and each of said strengthening inserts supporting a wearing insertand adapted; to connect said strengthening inserts adjacent their ends.
'36. A brake shoe comprising, in combination, 'a cast body having a strengthening insert of ductile metal of greater height than width arranged substantially vertically and edgewise therein, the lower edge of said strengthening insert being above the wearing surface of the shoe, and a wearing insert supoorted by said strengthening insert.
3 A brake shoe comprising, in combination, a cast body and a plurality of flanged strengthening inserts of ductile metal of greater height than width arranged edgewise therein, each of said strengthening inserts supporting a wearing insert and having its lower edge above the wearing face of the shoe.
38. A brake shoe comprising, in combination, a cast body, and a plurality of doubly horizontally flanged and substantially parallel, strengthening inserts of ductile metal arranged edgewise therein and connected adjacent their ends.
39. In a. brake shoe, in combination, a body portion and a wearing insert comprising a plurality of substantially parallel flanged portions extending longitudinally of the shoe and spaced apart a distance substantially equivalent to the width of one of them, and one pair of ends of said portions being staggered with respect to the other pair of ends by approximately the distance between the said portions, whereby said insert is substantially evenly distributed over the whole width of the brake shoe considered as a whole.
40. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body portion and a wearing insert comprising substantially parallel vertically and longitudinally disposed portions connected with flanged members and spaced apart a distance substantially equivalent to the width of one of them, said insert portions being provided with offset portions whereby they are restrained from movement longitudinally to said body.

In a brake shoe, in combination, a body portion, a wearing insert and a strengthening insert engaging said body portion and wearing insert and comprising substantially parallel flanged portions, said insert portions having their inner edges free and being provided with offset portions disposed below the back of the shoe whereby they are restrained from movement relatively to said body.

In a brake shoe, in combination, a body portion, a wearing insert and a strengthenening insert comprising substantially parallel inwardly flanged reinforcing members partially embedded in said body portion and the said wearing insert, said insert portions having their inner edges free and be ing arranged obliquely in the wearing face of the shoe.
43. In a brake shoe, in combination, a relatively soft metal body portion, a relatively hard insert adjacent the wearing face thereof, and a longitudinally and substantially vertically disposed inwardly flanged anchor entering said insert and said body.
44. In a brake shoe, in combination, a relatively soft metal body portion and a relatively hard insert adjacent the wearing face thereof provided with a longitudinally and substantially vertically disposed por tion provided with an angular flange directed toward the center of said body.
45. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body having an attaching lug, an insert adjacent the wearing face thereof and a stiffen ing anchor substantially vertically disposed in said body away from the wearing face thereof and engaging said insert and said body below said attachin lug, said anchor being provided with a flange directed toward the longitudinal axis of said body.
46. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body having an attaching lug, an insert adj acent the wearing face thereof, and a stiflening anchor engaging said insert and said body below said attaching lug, said anchor being provided with a plurality of flanges directed toward the center of said body and engaging said lug.
47. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body portion, an insert adjacent the wearing face thereof, and an anchor engaging said insert and said body, said anchor being positioned in said insert adjacent the center thereof and having a flange adjacent to and directed toward the center of said body.
48. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body portion, a wearing insert, and an anchor entering said insert and said body, said anchor following substantially the contour of said insert and being provided with a flanged portion adjacent to and directed toward the center of said body.
49. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body provided with an integral attaching lug of cast metal, a horizontally flanged insert, and a separate ductile metal member entering and reinforcing the cast metal of said lug and disposed under the flange of said insert.
50. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body, an insert adjacent the wearing face thereof, and a vertically and longitudinally disposed reinforcing member provided with a flange entering said insert and the body of the shoe.
51. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body having an attaching lug of cast metal, an insert adjacent the wearing face of the body, a reinforcement of ductile metal for said lug, and a flanged reinforcing member topics of this patent may be obtained for engaging said insert, said lug reinforcement and the body of the shoe.
52. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body, a longitudinally disposed wearing insert adjacent the wearing face thereof, and a rigid laterally flanged reinforcing member disposed in said body away from the wearing face thereof engaging said insert and engaging the body of the shoe above and away from said insert, whereby said shoe is stiflened.

A brake shoe provided with a strengthening insert of greater height than breadth disposed longitudinally therein and arranged substantially vertically and provided with lateral flanges adjacent its upper and lower portions, whereby the maximum resistance of the metal of such insert to bending moments is attained.
54. A brake shoe provided with a plurality of substantially straight strengthening inserts of greater height than breadth disposed longitudinally therein and ar ranged substantially vertically to the braking surface of the shoe and provided with thickened portions adjacent its upper and lower edges whereby the maximum resistance of the metal of such insert to bending moments is attained.
55. A brake shoe provided with a strengthening insert disposed longitudinally therein and arranged away from the wearing face of the shoe and substantially vertically to the braking surface of the shoe and provided with thickened portions adjacent its upper and lower edges, whereby the maximum resistance of the metal of such insert to bending moments is attained.
56. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body portion, a wearing insert, and a horizontally flanged anchoring member of irregular contour having cast engagement with said body.
57. In a brake shoe, in combination, a body portion, a wearing insert, and an inwardly flanged anchoring member of irregular contour embedded part in said body and part in said insert.
