Description

ITE@ BTATEB PATENT IRA B. LESI-I, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE RAILWAY MATERIALS COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
BRAKE-stron.
resinas?.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July .3?, igt?.
Application filed August 25, 1916. Serial No. 116,872.
To all whom it' may concern.'
Be it known that I, IRA B. LnsH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelk phia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake- Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in brake shoes and it has for its object to provide a solid steel attaching lug of novel form and construction rigidly united with the reinforcing back so as to produce a strong and substantial shoe having an attaching lug which will not be injured or fractured in handling or in service.
My invention can be embodied in car shoes or driver shoes of any type, including common cast iron shoes, composite shoes and composition shoes, but for simplicity I have shown it in a common cast iron shoe in the accompanying drawings, referring to which Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of a brake shoe embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the slice;
Fig. 3 is a side view of the back; and
Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are transverse sectional views showing different constructions of attaching lugs.
The back comprises a plate 7 of suitable size and curved to conform to the curvature of the shoe and provided with openings or otherwise constructed in ways common in the art whereby it is firmly embedded in the body S of the shoe, at or adjacent to its back. The attaching lug 9 is made of solid steel and provided with a key-way opening 10, the size of the lug and the opening being made to conform, if desired, to the Master Car Builders requirements and to fit snugly in the brake head. This lug may be forged or cut from a. properly shaped bar having the thickened portions ll and depending anchoring ends 12, the latter being bent to engage the underside of. the plate to anchor the lug to the plate.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the In the construction shown in' Fig. 4 the plate is provided with recesses 18 in its sides to receive the ends 12 which are bent inwardly beneath the plate; in the construction of Fig. 5 the plate is provided with slots 14 to receive the ends l2 which are bent outwardly beneath the plate. In the construction of Fig. 6 the lug is made up of a strip of uniform thickness and lblocks l5 are spot-welded thereto to provide the thickened upright members of the lug above the plate, this spot-welding uniting the parts of the lug together in a manner which makes them for the present purposes solid and integral.
My invention provides a strong and substantial attaching lug which is rigidly connected with the back plate and is solidly constructed to protect it from injury in handling and in service. The enlarged or thickened upright members of the lug are of sufficient size to protect the lug against bending' or breaking. The lug and the back plate are preferably made of steel but any other ductile metal may be employed if desired.
I claim:
l. A brake shoe comprising a body, a reinforcing plate embedded in the body, and a solid ductile metal attaching lug rigidly connected with the plate and having enlarged upright members.
2. A brake shoe comprising a body, a reinforcing plate embedded in the body, and a solid steel attaching lug rigidly connected with the plate and having enlarged upright members above the plate.
3. A brake shoe comprising a body, a reinforcing plate embedded in the body, a solid steel attaching lug having ends an chored beneath the plate, and enlarged upright members above the plate.
