and the object is to produce a board 'in which the'table top or ironing board proper will be more rigidly supported when the device is set up than ironing tables of this character as usually made. Another obj ect is to provide a device in which the parts are foldable into small compass and wherein the bosom board may be used or not as de sired.

The ironing board comprises a board proper or table herein numbered 1, which at its inner end is braced by a cleat 2 along its transverse center, and across its upper side by a rib 3. Over the latter may be fitted a block i which carries the bosom board 5, and this element may be fixed or removable as desired. Ironing boards of this character usually find their principal support from the edge of an ordinary table, herein indicated by the letter T, and such is the case in the present instance. The table or board 1 is intended to pass under the edge of the table top T, and it may be passed under to such an extent that such table top will rest against the block 4. Pivoted at 6 astride the cleat 2 is a pair of jaws 7 which rise through a notch 8 in the end of the table 1 and are preferably connected at their upper ends by a filler 9, their bodies being notched as at 10 just beneath said filler so that they will rest on the table top when the jaws stand in the p0sition shown in Fig. 1, provided their lower ends are swung under the table or board 1.

lVith the parts constructed as above described and of appropriate material and in the desired proportions, the operation of my device is as follows: When this improved ironing board is to be set up, its table 1 is passed under the edge of the table top T, the notches in the jaws engaging over said top, and the jaws themselves swung inward. This causes the brace 15 to be moved longitudinally until its beveled end 18 slides out under the table 1 and reliably braces the same against swinging movement. This action of the brace causes its pin to engage the slots 13, with the result that the leg 11 is held quite reliably in the position shown in Fig. 1, especially if the extension foot 14 has been properly adjusted. The use of the bosom board 5 is optional. When now the operator bears downward on the table 1 in the act of ironing, the pressure is distributed through and to the beveled end 18 of the brace, the pivoted end 12 of the leg, and the jaws where they clamp upon the table top T, with the result that this three-point support ofrthe table 1 renders the latter extremely rigid so that the principal object of this invention is attained. When not in use the parts are readily detached from the table top and folded into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and therefore the device occupies very little room when stored away.
