rack accommodating a large number of rolls and presenting theends of the roll boxes in positionto facilitate the reading of their titles. A further object of'my invention is to: provide a knock-down rack of such con-' struction-that its shelves may be collapsed on the frame and the base detached and confined within the frame,; so that when not in use the rack parts may be brought intlg a a structure withjparts of such character that they can be cheaply fabricated and standardized, thus insuring low cost of manufacture.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a vertical elevation of a rack in which my invention is embodied in one form;
Fig. 2 is a perspective of one of the rack shelves and portion of the connecting bars;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the rack;
Fig. 4: is a side elevation of the rack collapsed; and
Fig. 5 is a vertical section through the rack in opened position.
The construction here illustrated comprises a base 10 having on'its upper face a central boss 11 and tapped hole 12 into which takes the screw stem 13 of a wooden pivot pin 14, provided with a knob 15 to facilitate its insertion. Upon the cylindrical body portion of the screw and beneath the retaining flange 16, is swiveled the bottom bar 17 of an open frame, oblong in plan, the side uprights 18 and 19 of which are united at their upper ends by a cross bar 20 of any suitable type, here shown cylindrical and secured to the uprights by screws 21. Between the uprights 18 and 19 are pivoted, at their inner ends, two series of superposed shelves 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27,
one series on each side of the mid-plane of Specification of Letters Patent.

of each series are pivoted toconnecting bars 28 and 29, one on each side ofthe series and serving to maintain the shelves in pres determined spaced relation. At their upper ends the bars 28 and 29, are jointed to links 30-and 3,1 which have-at their inner ends bayonet slot openings 32 adapted to take. over; pins 33 and '34 on the inner face of the uprights 18 and 19 and so located that when,
' the uprights. At their'outer ends the shelves the pins lie at, the end of the bayonet slots the links .holdfthejshelves' in such inclined,
position that the titles on the ends of the music rollboxes are presented at an angle which facilitates. their reading.
'Each'shelf hasside and bottom flanges 36 which serve to retain the music roll boxes on theshelves. The connecting bars28 and 29 are preferablyvof channel section, the ends of the outwardlyiextended ends 37' ofthe side flanges 36 lyingwithin the channel 38 and being thus concealed by the bars28 and 29. The channel 38 ispreferably locatedto one side of the center of the bar so that the thin wall 39 faces the shelf and limits as littlev as possible the available a space for the music roll boxes.
It will be noted that the inclination of the shelves is such. that the center of gravity-of the rolls supported thereby falls within the area of the base 10. Consequently even were the rack loaded only on one side there would be no danger of tipping it over.
If the rack is to be stored or shipped the links 30 and 31 are disengaged from the pins 33-34 and the shelves folded upward so that they lie between the side uprights 18 and 19 of the frame and are thus protected during shipment. In this position the sidebars 28 and 29 lie against the edges of the uprights. It will be noted that the outer ends of the side flanges 36 are cut away to permit this. The pivot pin 15 may also be unscrewed and the detached base 10 may be placed between the shelves and the uprights of the frame, where it may be secured in any convenient way during shipment or storage. It will be noted that the uprights 18 and 19 and their end pieces 17 and 20 form a protective frame surrounding the shelves so that the crating 0r boxing of the rack is a very simple matter.
The ordinary construction of the present rack comprises six shelves, each accommodating six roll boxes of ordinary size so that.
rolls on each side or seventy-two rolls in all. If large boxes are placed upon the two lower shelves on each side, five may be accommodated on each shelf, and'the total capacity of the rack is thus lowered to sixty-eight, including thetwenty boxes-of large size. It will also be noted that the lower two shelves 22, 23, are spaced a Slightly'greater distance apart than the upper shelves to accommodate the boxes of larger size.
The construction illustrated is adapted for either wo0d or sheet'metal fabrication, and I do=not limit myself to either material. The rac'lec'an be made in large quantities at much lower cost than" an ordinary music roll cabinet,- oc'cupies little or no more roomin spite of its greater capacity, and presents many obvious practical advantages thereover, 1n
additionto that of economy. Various modificatlons in detail of construction will readily occur tothose skilled in'*th'e art which do not depart from what I claim as myinvention.
Thus for instance, chains may be used instead of the solid links 30'and a plain angle bar maybe substituted for the'chann'el bar 28.
I claim:
1. A-raclrfor player piano roll boxes comprising a fioorbas'e, a rectangular frame iaving bottom, top,- and side members rigidly secured*together, a-sw-iveling connection between said bottom member of the frame and the base, together with two series of up wardly' inclined shelves extendingflbetween Copies ofltmspatent' may'be obtainedfor five cents eachyby addressing-the Commissioner of Yaten'ts,
on one shelf extend above the lower margin of the shelf next above andthe upper ends of the roll boxes on all the shelves are presented at an angle to facilitate the reading of their titles, the inner margins ofthe shelves of the opposed series being spaced apart to leave a central open area intowhich the innermost corners of the roll boxes-project,
and means at the inner margin of each-shelffor supporting the lower inner corner of the rollboxes placed thereon, the shelves of each series beingpivoted tosaid side members of the frame and folding upward against each other into a substantially vertical position, the pivots ofadjacent shelves being spaced apart a less distance than the width of'the shelves.
2; In a construction such as specified in claim 1, means for collapsing the shelves substantially into the plane of the side uprightsfor storage and shipping purposes.
In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name to'tlns specificatlon.
