FRANCIS J. PLYML, or NILES, 'ivrrcnrenn. 5 f
Be it known that I, FRANCIS J.
a citizen of the United States, residing at,
N iles in the county of Berrien, in the State of Michigan, have invented a new and use-' ful Improvement in Store-Front Construcdrawings, in which there is illustrated one form of a sash bar embodying the invention. Of course, the construction there shown is illustrative only, and is not to be understood as definingthe limits of the invention. c
Figure 1 shows a cross-section of a bar embodying the invention when used as a division bar, and g f Fig. 2 shows the same when utilized as a corner bar. i V
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the face plate.-
Figs. 4 and 5 a similar viewof the back plate and reinforcing bar respectively.
Referring to the drawin s indetail: f
The reinforcin bar 1, w ich is con'struct ed preferably of steel-or iron, is of a cylindrical form provided with a slotted opening 2, and is of such a length as the height of the window requires, so that it will reach from the bottom to the top thereof. The face plate 3 is constructed of sheet metal, for example, drawn copper, as is also true with the back plate 4, both of which, like the reinforcing bar, preferably extend from the bottom to the top of the window, in I which case they are provided with a plurality of openings to receive screws 6, which screws pass through the slot in the relnforcing bar and out the opposite side of said bar, where they areat their inner ends'provided with suitable nuts. By properly adjusting the nuts the parts may be adjusted toward or from each other.
It will be noticed that the back'plateis Appl icatidnfiledMay 19,1915. Seria1'No.29,088 I I STORE-FEONT CONSTRUCTION. l

with glass engaging aiid is so formed as to present a semi-circular bearing surface against. the reinforcing bar,
as a result of which and the slotted reinforcing bar, the construction, while yieldingly holding the glass in place, is nevertheless of sufficient strength to withstand the undue strain incident to its use, and'is quite ca-, pable of supporting the frame at the upper. side of the window. 1
Further, by providing for a semi-cylindricalshaped bearing surface between the reinforcingbar and back plate the extent I which the glass engaging flanges overlap the glass is cut scant or'where it has pulled glass may be adjustedby means. of the fact away from'the bar dueto settling of the building or frost.
By providing the reinforcing bar with the slotted opening, the bar is to an appreciable extent, adapted toprovide for the absorption of forces when abnormal strains are imposed upon the glass engaging flangesofthe back plate, for in such instances the longitudinal edges of the reinforcing *bar will b'e moved toward each other.
In the manufacture of these devices, the
faceiandback plates 3 and 4 respectively, are usuallymade from hard drawn copper which, possesses an appreciable amount of resiliency, but is sufliciently rigid to cause the vertical edges of the reinforcing bars to moveslightly toward each other before becoming disformed sufficiently to take a permanent set. In other words. when undue pressure is imposed upon the glass the back plate will give slightly before affecting the slotted banbut as the pressure increases, for example, when" subject to abnormal strains such as imposed by high winds, 1t Wlll cause toward each other before becoming disthe edges of the slotted bars to move-slightly of a resilient cylindrical reinforcing mem- V ber provided with a vertical slot extending from one end to the other, a back plate, a
