Be itknown that I, JAMES W. ALEXANDER,
a citizen of the United States, residingat Old Church, in the county of Hanover and .State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in li/Iower-Knife Sharpeners; and I do herebyY declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to` make and use the same. f
This invention relates to Sharpeners for vmower knives and the primary object of the invention is to provide a lpivoted sharpV` ening element carried by the guard finger having. spring means` to normally` hold the same in frictional contact with the cutter blade, so that the cutter blade will be sharpened as the same moves back and forth in the guard. 1 o
Another object of the invention is theprovision of means for allowing the vsharpening element to be lifted'outjof engagement with the cutter blade and at right angle thereto, so that the sharpening element can be' readily repaired when necessary.V
A further object of the invention is-theV provision of a pin, which is adapted t0 be inserted in the rear end of the guard for engaging the under surface of the sharpening element for holding the same out of engagement with the cutter knifewhen so desired.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described, which is durable and eiicient in use, one that is simple and easy to construct and one that can be placed upon the market at a reasonable price.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which:

Referring to the drawing in detail, whereinsimilar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, thel numeral 1 designates the cutter blade which may be of any desired construction or-configuration andis adapted to be reciprocated by the slide plate 2 mounted in the guard 3 for the blade. A stationary blade 4 is removably secured to each guard 31byy means' of a detachable fastening element 5. Thestationaryblade 4 is gradually tapered toward` its outer end torconform to the shape of the guardl and has its longitudinal edges serrated to provide a cutting surface to coperatefwith the cute ting blade 1. p The rear end of the sta# Ytionary 'cutter bladef'isenlarged as at 7 and the edges of the same are beveled inwardly as at" 8 and the same are received in a cut out portion 9 in the guard 3. An elongated opening 10 is formed in the central portion of the stationary blade 4 and this opening registers with a similar formed recess 11 formed in the guard 3, for a purpose which will be hereinafter more fully appear. The guard 3 is provided with a rearwardly extending attaching lug 12 by which the same may be secured to a mowing machine. The outer end of the guard 3 is tapered as at 13 in the ordinary manner and pivoted at its end is the sharpening element 14. The sharpening element 14 comprises the reduced shank 15 and the blade 16, and the same is formed of a suitable' sharpening steel. A pivot pin 17 extends transversely through the outer end of the guard 3 and pivotally supports the sharpening element 14. The upper end of the guard 3 is bifurcated as at 18 and the sharpening element 14 is adapted to extend through the slot. A leai;1 spring 19 is provided for normally holding the sharpening element 14 in a lowered position and in engagement with the reciprocating cutter blades 1. The leaf spring 19 has an enlarged outer end 20 and is pivotally positioned in place by means of a pivot pin 21 which extends through the enlarged portion and the outer end of the guard 3. The leaf spring 19 normally holds the blade of Patented Aug. 6, 191.8.

A pin 22i's provided for holding the sharpening element out of engagement with the cutter blade l and 'against the tension of the leaf spring 19, This pin is adapted to be inserted in a transversely extending aperture Q3 formed in the inner upper end of the guard The pin 22 is provided at its central portion with a notch 24 which is adapted to receive the sharpening element and hold the same out of engagement with the cutter blades.
When it is desired to repair the sharpening element 14 the spring 19 is swung on its pivot pin 2l and out of engagement with the sharpening element and then, the` same can be swung on its pivot at a right angle to the guard. Vhen the sharpening element la assumes this position any repairs necessary can be readily made on the same.
