Be it known thatI I, -HANS F. RICHTER, a
vcitizen of the United States,` residing at VVinston-Salem, in the county of Forsyth and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Label-Affixing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for attaching stamps 0r labels to articles, and while the invention may be employed in machines for various specific purposes, by way of example I have described the invention as applied to a machine for applying stamps or labels to packages.
A principal object of the invention is to produce a-smple and eiicient machine for aflixing stamps or labels, to the wall of an article such as a package, and which is capable of performing the operations very quickly, thereby giving the machine a large capacity or output.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for enabling'the stamp or label to be aiiixed to more than one wall of the article or package. y
AA further object of the invention is to provide means enabling the machine to 0p'- erate in such a way that a portion 0f the label is first aiixed to the package and the remaining portion of the label is aiixed to the wall of the package afterward. y v
A further object of the invention is to provide means for effecting the aiixng of the label in. the manner just suggested by applying an adhesive substance to the wall of the package to enable a portion of the label to be affixed thereto, and to provide means operating thereafter to apply an adhesive substance to the unattached portion of the label which is thereafter aiixed to the wall of the package by the machine.
' In the present instance the machine is intended to apply stamps or labels to the end walls of packages, and the packages have near their end walls labead which in a sense may form a certain obstruction or obstacle in thepath of the instrumentalities for affixing the label; one of the objects of the present invention is to provide improved means for applying a label to such a package, having specially constructed means` for applying the label over such a bead or rib,
*as Suggested above; and also toprovide means for insuring that the parts of the label attached to the bead will become securely affixed.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a machine with means for preventing the actuation of parts of the label aflixing mechanism in 'cse a package fails p .vention, certain parts being broken away.

Fig. 6 is a vertical section taken through the mechanism shown in Figs. 3 to 5, but in a plane at right angles to the plane in which Figs. 3 to 5 lare shown. Before proceeding to a detailed description of the mechanism illustrated, and in order to facilitate the disclosure of t he 1nvention, it is to be understood that in the present embodiment of the invention the mechanism may be considered as consisting of label aflixing mechanism which effects the first part of the operation, namely, that of atlixing a portion of the label to the package, and secondly, of label aflixing mechanism, the purpose of which is to complete the affixing of the label to the package.
Referring now especially to Fig. 2, the machine preferably comprises an elevated table 15 which is provided with label afliX- ing mechanism 16 for affixing a portion of fthe label to the package. The details of this mechanism V16 are illustrated most clearly in Figs. 3 to 6. This mechanism preferably operates in such a way that an adhesive substance or glue is applied to the wall such as the end wall of the package, and this is most conveniently done while the package is being fed past an adhesive applying device.
The packages, by way of example, maybe relatively thin flat packages such as the package 21 illustrated, and this' package, on account of its relatively thin fiat form, has an elongated end wall. I prefer to feed a guide 1 7 on the table.
stantly forward these packages on a feeding line parallel or coinciding with the longitudinal axis of the end wall to which the label is to be applied, and this may be accomplished by any suitable means such as by means of Adjacent to this guide, suitable means is provided for effecting the feeding forward or advance of the packages separately one by one in order to position them at the point where they are to receive the label. In the present instance this means consists of a reciprocating bar 18, extending substantially parallel with the guide 17, and this bar is provided with a plurality of spring-pressed or spring-pulled 'dogs 18a. At each outward movement of the feed bar each dog trails past the package and engages the outer edge or side of the package, and on the inward movement it advances this package. In this way the packages are advanced by a step-by-step movement. This operation results in positioning every package for a short space of time at the point where it is to receive the label, that is, adjacent the label affixing mechanism 16, past and adjacent to which the guide 17 extends.
The labels 19 which are to be applied to the packages are preferably held in a stack or pack in a magazine 20 which is located adjacent to the path of the end wall of the package 21. In the present instance this end wall is on a hinged cover 21a on the package 21. As the packages are fed forward into position to receive the label, they pass adjacent to an adhesive applying device 22 which may be of any suitable construction, but preferably comprises a glue applying roller 23, the face of which conrolls against a wallower or roller 24 which dips into a bath 25 of glue or a similar adhesive. I prefer to rot-ate the roller 23 by any suitable means such as the belt 26 so as to cause the face of the roller 23 to move at a different speed from the package, and this produces a desirable wiping effect of the gluing roller upon the package.
The magazine 20 is preferably without a bottom and is of the proper shape to support the labels 19 which are` by the way, preferably of greater length than the end wall of the package to which they are to be applied. The magazine is preferably provided at its lower end with end supports 27 which support the ends of the labels in the pack. By this arrangement the foremost or bottom label in the pack is left exposed on its under face. When the package 21 is properly positioned under the magazine 20, a relative approaching movement between the package and magazine is effected in order to apply the middle portion of the foremost or bottom label of the pack to the glued wall of the package.
In order to accomplish this, I prefer to mount the magazine upona slide 20a reciprocating vertically in a vertical guide 28. The magazine may be reciprocated through the medium of a link 29 connected with a lever 30 having a pin and slot connection 31 with the back of the magazine, andthe said link may be actuated by a cam 32 on the continuously driven main shaft 33 of the machine. -I prefer to control the label alliXing mechanism so that if for any reason the package fails to feed into position to receive a label, the bottom label will not be disengaged from the magazine. In other words, the maga-` zine is constantly reciprocating, and if a Y package is in position, the. label will be applied to it. I prefer to control this mechanism by the package itself, and this is preferably accomplished through the medium of a part which lies in the path of the package, and which'is displaced by the package when positioned to receive the label. For
this purpose, near the ends of the magazine, I prefer to providetwo separating` devices preferably in the form of two rollers 34, the upper faces of which are normally resting against the lower face of the bottom label in the pack. If a package is in position, these rollers are rotated automatically at about the'time thatthe bottom label descends with and is applied by the magazine to -the upper wall ofthe package. This detaches the, projecting end portions of the label from the end supports. I also prefer to give these separating devices orrollers a slight downward movement thereafter so as to force the projecting'ends of the label downand along the sides of the package.
In order to effect this, I prefer to provide the shafts of the rollers 34 with pinions 35,
see Fig. 3. These pinions` are actuated at the proper time'by segments 3G which are pivotally supported on`- pins 37 preferably directly on the magazine. These segments 36 are actuated by a relatively 'fixed means as they advancewith the magazine in its advancing movement'toward the package.4

These pins 38 are mounted in a block 40 which is engaged by thelat side face of the package. and move back so. that they come into the path of the arms 39 ifa package is in position; otherwise, the arms 39 simply pass idly by the stems or pins y38vand the rollers are not actuated. Evidently the rollers are rotated in such away that the upper surface of eachroller which is in contact with the label m'ovps toward the package. Thebase of the guide 28 also forms a guide for guiding an extension 44 of the' block. A small stop 45 is provided on the rearof this extension which limits the forward movement of .the block or shoe 40. In
'order to -give the separating devices or rollers 34 a further downward movement such as illustrated in Fig. 5I prefer simply' to give the magazine an increased movement, that is, a greater movement than would besimply necessary to affix the bottom label to the end Wallfof the package, but in order to sulport the pack of labels, I prefer to e means for arresting the downward preferably mounted in guides 46 on the ends of the magazineso that they have a limited vertical sliding movement on the magazine.

. function ofrwhich is to complete the affixing of the label to the package. Having advanced the packages along'a feeding line coinciding withv the longitudinal axis of the 'end wall of the package, I prefernow to -,advance the packages along a feeding line coinciding with the transverse or short axis `of theend wall of the package, and the label allixingmechanism 49 preferably operates to apply'an adhesive to theprojecting portion or portionsof the label which remain unattached and then affix these heretofore unatta'ched parts to the package. Any suitable means may be provided for effecting this operation, but inthe present instance again in order to explain how it is actuated. It may be actuated in any suitable manner. In the present instance this is accomplished by means of an eccentric 55, see Fig. 1, which is on the shaft 33, and operates an eccentric rod 56 which is connected to a lever 57, said lever being connected by a link 58 with the end of the bar 18.
Means is provided for advancing each package from the mechanism 16 to a position before the plunger preparatory to effecting the complete alfixing 'of the label. This means preferably also operates to give the package a partial rotation before it is advanced in a direction along the feeding line coincident with the transverse or short axis of the end wall.
This mechanism preferably comprises a curved guide 59 into which the package is advanced by the reciprocating feed bar 18. This means also preferably includes a member or part moving about an axis to further advance the package from the guide and bring it into position before the plunger. For this purpose I prefer to provide a rocking or swinging arm 60 carrying means for engaging the rear edge or side of the package. This is preferably in the form of a spring-pressed dog 61 carried on the end of the arm. The arm 60 secured to a vertical shaft 62 which extends through the table and the lower part of the shaft, is rotated or rocked to and fro by any suitable means. This rocking movement is preferably accomplished through the medium of a segment 63 attached to the shaft and which meshes with a reciprocating rack 64, see Figs. 1 and 2. This rack 64 is mounted to slide in a suitable guide 65 on the under side of the table and is reciprocated through the medium of a lever 66, the rupper end of which is attached by a link 67 to the end of the rack. The lever 66 is attached to a shaft 68 to which the aforesaid lever 57 is attached so that the lever 57 imparts its rocking movement to the lever 66 through the rocking shaft 68. y
In line with the reciprocating plunger 50, that is, on t-he second feeding line, I prefer to provide a receiver 69 toward and into which the plunger 50 moves the packages. This receiver 69 is preferably substantially in the form of an open trough, comprising a fixed guide or side rail 70 and a yieldingly pressed side rail 71. vThe means for yieldingly pressing the side rail 71 inwardly preferably comprises two spring barrels 72 in which springs 73 are located, see Fig. 10.
In order to complete the afxing of the label to the package, I prefer to apply an 'adhesive or glue to the projecting end portions of the label after the package has been positioned before the plunger 50. For this purpose, I prefer to provide two separated glue applying devices, preferably in the form of two rollers 74, each of which is supplied with an adhesive or glue from a suitable receiver 75. As the package is moved forward by the plunger between these rollers, I prefer to guide the projecting end portions of the label so that they will pass over the rollers. This is preferably accomplished by means of slightly curved or bent plate form guides 76. These guides are omitted in Fig. 2 to prevent them from hiding any details of the construction.
In order to assist in holding the package in position between the rollers 74, I prefer to provide two detent pawls 77 which are preferably spring pressed, as shown. The ends of these pawls engage the rear side edges of the package and prevent its receding with the plunger. When the package with the partially affixed label is in position between the rollers 74, see Fig. 9, members operate to edect the smearing of the end portions of the label with the adhesive by wiping them on the faces of the rollers 74 and then operate to extend these unattached portions of the label down along and against the sides ofthe package. In order to accomplish this effect, I prefer to provide a crosshead 79, see Fig. 9, which is preferably reciprocated in a substantially vertical plane by a cam 80, operating upon a yoke 81. This cam is mounted upon a cam shaft 82 which is actuated by bevel gears 83 from the main shaft 33 of the machine. Sliding freely through the middle portion of the crosshead 79, there is provided a stem 84 which carries a presser head 85 at its lower end, or similar means for pressing the affixed portion of the label on the package at the time that the unattached portions are being extended down the side of the package. The under face of the presser head is provided with a yielding cushion 85a of rubber or similar resilient material. This presser head 85 is resiliently pressed toward the packages beneath it by means of a spring 86 disposed around the stem 84` and thrusting at its upper end against across bar 87, said cross bar being supported on fixed stems 88.
From this arrangement evidently, when the cross head moves up to its uppermost position, the guide sleeve 89 on the cross head will engage a fixed sleeve 90 on the stem 84 and lift the stem and presser head 85 so as to permit the advancing movement of the packages under the head through the action of the plunger 50. When the cross head has descended slightly from its highest position, it lets the presser head down on the packages through the action of the spring 86. The descent of the cross head opcrates means for wiping the unattached parts of the label across the rollers 74. This means is preferably in the form of two fingers 91, said fingers being pivotally at tached at their upper ends to the lower ends of brackets 92 which are preferably .pivoted at 9301i the crosshead, see Fig. "10. It is understood that the guide rails 70 and 71'aredisposed below the level of the labels so that theydo not tend to disturb the endsof the labels as the packages 1re bank of the packages will accumulate with their flaty sides` touching each other,I and `with thelabeled ends of the packages exposed. The yielding pressure of the rail 71 against the packages, of course, resists their passage through the receiver, but in order to give additional yielding resistance, I prefer to provide near the rear or delivery end l106 of the receiver a pair of arms 107 which are pivoted at 108 and inclined in the direction in which the packages are advancing through y,the receiver. These arms are pulledytoward each other by a spring 109 vwhichis disposed at an elevation above the ypackages so as not to obstruct their advance,
see Fi g. i1." After the fingers 91 have operated to extend the ends of the label down the sides of each package, the ends of the labels are yieldingly pressed preferably repeatedly so as to insure that they will ytakea good hold on the wall of the package.
Y Now, in order to accomplish this result, I
prefer to provide yielding wipers, `preff `erably in the form of brushes 110 which are preferably rotary brushesmounted on shafts 111 which extend substantially parallel with fthe longitudinal axis of the receiver. These u y `f brushes are preferably not continuous cirthroughi these pawls'to the-'brackets 92. In order to effect this, Inpreferftofprovide the cumferentially; in other words, they are preferably substantially semi-cylindrical, as
viewed from their ends, see Fig. 9. Their 110 upper faces rotate toward the` packages so receiver, they will be acted upon again and again by these, brushes. The cross head 79 is preferably pulled down constantly by lmeans of a spring 112. In order to rotate the brushes or wiersll), I prefer to provide' their sha s sprocket wheels 113 over which 4endless chains 114 and 115 pass. The chain 114 passes around the sprocket wheel on'the shaft 82 and the chain 115 passes around a similar sprocket wheel 116 on the stubshaft 117. The stub shaft 117 is rotated at the same speed but in the opposite direction from shaft 82 by suitable gear wheels 118.
I shall now describe the general mode of with operation of the entire machine. The packages are fed forward one by one by the feed bar 18 and dogs 18a. In this way each package is made to pass under the glue applying roller 23 which applies the adhesive to the upper end of the wall of the package. Each package comes to rest and is positioned under the magazine :20 which is constantly reciprocating.
At- .each forward or downward movement of the magazine. the bottom label in the magazine is applied to the upper end wall of the package. After the bottom label is applied in this way, the magazine continues its downward movement and the stems 38 Strike the arms 39 and actuate the segments 36 which operate to rotate the separating devices or rollers 31. These operate to detach the ends of the label from the end supports 27, and at the same time move downwardly so that they force the unattached end portions of the label down on the sides of the package. The magazine then withdraws and moves up high enough to carry t-he rollers 34 out of the path of the packages. The package which has just had a label applied to it, then passes on and a new package comes into position under the magazine.
rlhe package with the label partially afixed passes into the curved guide 59 and is advanced and partially rotated by the swinging arm 60 which brings it around into position before the plunger 50. The plunger then advances and moves the package forwardly toward the receiver 69. As
the package advances, the projecting end portions of the label come into position over the rollers 74 and the package comes to rest.
The presser head 85 is then let down on to the packages which are under the cross head 79 through the operation of the descending cross head. The presser head 85, therefore, operates to press firmly on the end of the package the previously afixed' portion of the label. The descent of the cross head further operates to advance the fingers 91 which move down along the sides of the package, operating to engage the ends of the label and give the same a wiping movement across the rollers 74.
As soon as the lower ends of the fingers 91 have passed the bead 100 on the package. they move inwardly and press the ends of the label against the sides of the package. This, to a certain extent, aiiixes the label to the package. When the cross head 79 moves upwardly it carries with it the ngers 91, and near the end of its upward movement it strikes the sleeve 90 and pulls up the stem 84, which carries the presser head 85. This raises the presser head and enables the packages under the head to be advanced. The movement of the bank of packages inthe container 69 is a step-by-step movement, each movement being equal to the width or thickness of one of the packages. On account of` the considerable width of the presser head 85, it therefore follows that it would descend repeatedly upon the same package. In this way the middle portion of the label on each package will be pressed again and again by the presser head.
,As the packages move through the receiver G9, the end portions of the labels are repeatedly and yieldingly pressed by the wipers 110 so as to insure that they will take a good hold on the side walls of the packages.
It is understood that the embodiment of the invention set forth herein is only one of the many embodiments or forms the invention may take, and I do not wish to be limited in the practice of the invention nor in my claims to the particular embodiment set forth. And I may use any feature of my invention without the other features.
That I claim is:
1. In a machine for afixing stamps or labels to packages, in combination, supporting means for holding a plurality of labels with the outer face of the foremost label exposed, means for applying an adhesive to the wall of the package which is to receive the label, means for effecting a relative movement between said supporting means and each package to press that wall of the package against the outermost label, leaving an end portion of the label unattached to the package, means operating upon said end portion of the label which extends beyond the package operating to detach the end portion of the label from said supporting means, and means operating thereafter for aiixing the said end portion of the label to a side wall of the package.
2. In a machine for aiiixing stamps or labels to packages. in combination, supporting means foi holding a pluralit)v of labels which are to be applied to packages with the outer face of the foremost label eX- posed, means for effecting a relative movement between said supporting means and each package to press a wall of the package against the outermost` label with an end portion of the label unattached, means controlled by the package for operating upon a projecting end portion of the label which extends beyond said wall for detaching said projecting end portion of the label from .said supporting means, means operating thereafter to apply an adhesive to the projectin end portion of the label, and means for a xing the said projecting end portion of the label to a side wall of the package.
3. In a machine for afixing stamps or labels to packages, in combination, supporting means for holding a pluralityr of labels of greater length than the Wall to which they are to be applied, with the outer face of the foremost label exposed, means for applying an adhesive to the Wall of the package which is to receive the label, means for effecting a relative movement between said supporting means and each package to press that wall of the package against the outermost label, means operating upon the end portions of the label which extend beyond the package, operating to detach the end portions of the label from said supporting means, means operating thereafter to apply an adhesive to said end portions of the label, and means for aiixing the end portions of the label to the side walls of the package.
6. In a machine for alixing stamps or labels to packages, in combination, supporting means for lholding a plurality o f labels of greater length that the wall to which they are to be applied, with the outer face of the foremost label exposed, means vfor effecting a relative movement between said supporting means and each package to press a Wall of the package against the outermost label,
means controlled by the package for operating upon the projecting end portions of the label which extend beyond said Wall for detaching the projecting end portions of the label from said supporting means, means operating thereafter to apply an adhesive tothe projecting end portions-of the label, and means for aifxing the projecting end portions of the label tothe side walls of the package.

9. In a machine for aiixing stamps or labels to thev ends yof packages, in combination, means for advancing' the packages With a selected facer foremost alonga-sub- -turning the packages during advancing Vmovement and for causing them `to move along a second feeding line extending in a direction transverse to the said first named feeding line and with a different face foremost, and means for atlixing said unattached portion of the label to the package While on said second feeding line.
10. In a machine for aXing stamps'or labels to packages, in combination, a bodily movable magazine for holding `a plurality of labels, label separating means associated with said magazine for positively engaging and separating an end of the lowermost label from the others in the magazine, means-` for advancing the packages in succession into position adjacent said magazine to receive the labels therefrom, a continuously driven member for reciprocating the magazine, and means actuated b the package when in position adjacent the magazine for effecting a connection between said continuously driven member and said label separating means to effect the application of a label from the magazine to the package, only when a package is in label receiving position.

In a machine for aiixing stamps or labels to packages, in combination, a movable magazine for holding a plurality of labels, label atlxing means associated with said magazine, means for advancing the packages in succession into )osition adjacent said magazine to receive the labels, a continuously driven member for reciprocating the magazine, means actuated by the package when in position adjacent the magazine for effecting a connection between said continuously driven member and said label atiixing means to enable said driven member to effect the application of a portion of a label from the magazine to the package, and means operating thereafter to apply the remaining portion of the label to the package.

In a machine for aiixing stamps or labels to packages, in combination, a magazine for holding a plurality of labels of greater length than the wall to which each label is to be applied, with the foremost label in the magazine exposed, means for positioning a package adjacent the magazine and for effecting a relative movement between the package and the magazine to press the foremost label in the magazine against the adjacent wall of the package, means for engaging the projecting end portions of the label which extend beyond the package and for forcing the same inwardly toward the package, and means for ahxing the said projecting end portions of the label to the walls of the package thereafter. i

In a machine for afiixing stamps or labels to packages, in combination, a. magazine for holding a plurality of labels of greater length than the wall to which each label is to be applied, with the foremost label in the magazine exposed, means for positioning the package. adjacent the magazine and for eifecting a rela-tive movement between the package and the magazine to affix the middle portion of the said foremost label .to the adjacent wall of the package, rollers for engaging the projecting end portions of the label which extend beyond the package, means for rotating said rollers to disengage the ends of the label from the magazine and for simultaneously7 moving said rollers bodily along the wall of the package to force the projecting ends of the label inwardly toward the package, and means operating thereafter for aiixing the said projecting ends of the label to the Walls of the package.

In a machine for afiixing stamps or labels t0 packages, in combination, a magazine for holding a plurality of labels of greater length than the wall to which each label is to be applied, with the foremost label in the magazine exposed, means for positioning the package adjacent the magazine andfor effecting a relative. movement between the package and the magazine to affix the middle portion of the said foremost label to the adjacent wall of the package, rollers for engaging the projecting end portions of the label which extend beyond the package. means for rotating said rollers to disengage the ends of the label from the magazine and for simultaneously moving said rollers bodily along the wall of the package to force the projecting ends of the label inwardly toward the package, means for applying an adhesive to the projecting ends of the label, and means operating thereaft-er for atlixing the said projecting ends of the label to the walls of the package.

In a machine for aitixing stamps or labels to packages, in combination, a magazine for holding a plurality of labels of greater length than the wall to which the label is to be applied, with the foremost label in the magazine exposed, means for positioning the package to be labeled adj acent the magazine and for effecting a relative movement between the package and the magazine to affix the middle portion of the said foremost label to the adjacent wall of the package, with the projecting end portions of the label extending beyond the package, rollers normally engaging the said foremost label, said magazine having end supports for the ends of said labels, means for rotating said rollers to disengage the ends of the foremost label from said end supports and for forcing the same toward the package, and means for aiiixing the end portions of the label to the walls of the package.

In a. machine for afixing stamps or labels to packages, in combination, a magazine for holding a plurality of labels of greater length than the wall to which the label is to be applied, with the foremost label in the magazine exposed, means for positioning the package adjacent the magazine, means for effecting a relative approaching movement between the package and the magazine to aflix the middle ortion of the said foremost label to the adjacent wall of ther package, rollers carried by said magazine normally engaging the end portions of the foremost label, said magazine having relatively movable end supports for the ends of the labels, means for rotating said rollers to disengage the end portions of the foremost label from the said end supports about the time the middle portion of the foremost label becomes affixed to the package, means forarresting the said end supports before the said approaching movement ceaseswhereby the rela-tive movement of said magazine carries the said rollers along the side of the'package.

In a machine for afixingstamps or ylabels to packages, in combination, a movable magazine for holding a plurality of labels, means for .positioning a package adjacentsaid magazine, means for effecting a relative approaching movement between the magazine and the package to aiix a label from the magazine on the adjacent wall of the package with the end portions of the label projecting from the package, rollers carried by the magazine engaging the label which is to be applied to the package, relatively movable end supports for the labels carried by the magazine, stops for arresting the said end supports during the relative approaching movement of the magazine and the package whereby said magazine and the rollers continue to advance after a portion of the label has been aiiixed to the adjacent wall of the package, and means for rotating the rollers to disengage the partially affixed label from the end supports and for forcing the end portions thereof along and against the side walls of the package. In a machine for aiiixing stamps or labels to packages, in combination, a magazine for holding a plurality of labels with AA-theforemost label exposed, means for effectanism for rotating said roller as the magazine and package approach each other, to disengage the end of the label and to force the same down along a side wall of the package and for aliixing the same to the side Wall of the package.

25. ln a machine for afixing stamps or labels to packages, in combination, a movable magazine for holding a plurality of labels, With the foremost label exposed, means for feeding forward the packages and positioning the package adjacent said magazine, means for advancing the magazine to apply a portion of the foremost label to the adjacent Wall of the package, separating means engaging a portion of the foremost label for disengaging the same from the magazine, movable members carried by the magazine for actuating said last means, relatively iixed means engaging said members to cause the same to actuate the said separating means when the magazine advances, and means operating thereafter for completing the application of the label to the package.
26. ln a machine for aflixing stamps or labels to packages, in combination, a movable magazine for holding a plurality of labels, with the foremost label exposed, means for feeding forward the packages and positioning the package adjacent said magazine, means for advancing the magazine to apply a portion of the foremost label to the adjacent Wall of the package, separating means engaging a portion of the foremost label for disengaging the same from the magazine, movable members carried by the magazine for actuating said last means, relatively fixed means engaging said members to cause the same to actuate the said separating means when the magazine advances, means operating thereafter for completing the application of the label to the package, and automatic means actuated by the package for controlling the position of the relatively fixed means to prevent the actuation of the separating means if a package fails to feed into position.

In a machine for aiiixng stamps to the ends of packages, in combination, means for advancing the packages one by one along a feeding line, means for applying an adhesive to the end wall of each package as it advances, means for applying a label to the said end wall of the package with projecting portions of the label extending beyond the package, means for advancing the package thereafter in a direction substantially at right angles to the said feeding line, means for applying an adhesive to the projecting end portions of t-he label, and means for aiiixing said projecting end portions of the label to the side walls of the package.

In a machine for affxing stamps to the ends of packages, in combination, means for advancing the packages one by one along a feeding line, means for applying an adhesive tothe end wall of each packa e as it advances, means for applying a labe to the said end wall of the package with projecting portions of the label extending beyond the package, means for advancing the package 4thereafter in a direction substantially at right angles to the said feeding-line, glue applying members adjacent to the path of said projecting portions, means for causing va relative movement between said adhesive applying members and said projecting portions to apply an adhesive to said projecting portions, and means operating thereafter for aflixing said projecting portions of the label to the side walls of the package.

In a machine for' aflixing stamps to the ends of packages, in combination, means for advancing the packages one by one along a feeding line, means for applying an adhesive to the end wall of each packa e as it advances, means for applying a labe to the said end wall of the package with projecting portions of the label extending beyond the package, means for advancing the package thereafter in a direction substantially at right angles to the said feeding line, glue applying rollers on each side of the path of the package and adjacent t'o which said projecting portions of the label pass, means for moving the projecting portions to wipe the same on said glue applying rollers and to `extend the same along and against the sides of the package to aiix thereto said projecting end portions of the label.
34. In a machine for aftixing stamps to the ends of packages, in combination, means for advancing the packages one by one along a feeding line, means for applying an adhesive to the end'wall of each package as it advances, means for applying a label to the said end wall of the package with projecting portions of the label extending beyond the package, means for advancing the package thereafter in a direction substantially at lright angles to the said feeding line, glue applying rollers on each-side of the path of the package and nearl the path of the projecting portions of the label, and members each movable between each roller andthe adjacent wall of the package to wipe the projecting portions of the label on the surface of said rollers and to extend and press the same downA and against the side walls of the package.

In a machine for affixing stamps to the ends of packages, in combination, means for advancing the packages one by one along a feeding line, means for applying an adhesive to the end wall of each package as it advances, means for applying ,a label to the said end wall of the packagewith projecting portions of the label extending beyond the package, means for advancing the package thereafter in a direction substantially at right angles 4to the said feeding line, glue applying rollers on each side of the path of the package and near the path of the projecting portions of the label, members each movable between each roller and the adjacent wall of the package to wipe the projecting portions of the label on the surface of saig` rollers and to extend and press the same own-andagainst the side walls of the package, and means for again pressing the end portions of the label against the wall of the package.
36. In a machine for aflixing stamps or labels to the ends of relatively thin and substantially flat packages, in combination, means for advancing the packages one by one in a plane substantially parallel with the flat side of the faces of the package, means for applying an adhesive to the end wall of each package as it advances, means for applying a 'label to the end wall of the package with projecting portions of the label extending beyond the package, means for advancing the package thereafter in a direction substantially at right angles to the plane of the flat sides of the package, means for applying an adhesive to the projecting end portions of the label, and means for alixing said projecting end portions of the label tothe side walls of the package.
37. In a machine for affixing stamps or labels to packages, .in combination, means for ailixing the middle portion of the label to a wall of the package with the endporpackage, a pair of oppositely disposed glue applying rollers, means :tor positioning the package and the partially applied label between said rollers, with the end portions of said label extending adjacent to said rollers, and members movable respectively between the side walls of the package and said rollers for engaging said projecting end portions to wipe the same on the surfaces of said rollers to apply glue thereto and for extending said end portions along and against the side of the package.
38. ln a machine for axing labels to packages, in combination, means for at'fixing a portion of the label to a wall of the package, withv a projecting portion of the label extending from the package, a glue applying roller, means for advancing the package and partially attached label so that the proj ecting portion of the label lies adjacent said glue applying roller, means for pressing the aliixed portion of the label against the package and a member movable between the package and the said roller to cause the projecting portion of the label to wipe the face oit the roller and operating to extend the said projecting portion along and against the side wall of the package.
39. ln a machine for afHxing labels to packages, in combination, means for adixing a portion of the label to a wall of the package, with a projecting portion of the label extending from the package, a glue applying roller, means for advancing the package and partially attached label so that the proj ecting portion of the label lies adjacent said glue applying roller, means for pressing the axed portion of the label against the package, a member movable between the package and the said roller to cause the projecting portion of the label to wipe the face of the roller and operating to extend the said projecting portion along and against the side wall -of the package, and yielding means operating thereafter to press the label and insure a closer contact between the said projecting portion of the label and the side wall of the package.
40. In a machine for axing stamps or labels to packages, in combination, means for advancing the package to be labeled,=
means for applying an adhesive to a wall of the package, means for applying a portion of the label to -said wall with projecting portionsvof the label extending from the package, means for applying an adhesive to the projecting portions of the label and for extending them along the side walls of the package, and brushes for engaging said projecting portions to press the same against the sides of the package to ax the same thereto.

In a machine for allixing stamps or labels to packages, in combination, means for @lil age, means for applying a portion of the label to said wall with projecting portions of the label extending on each side from the package, means for applying an adhesive to the projecting portions of the label and for extending said projecting portions along the side walls of the package, means for forming a bank of the packages with the packages arranged side by side, and means for yieldingly repeatedly pressing the end portions of the labels on the packages in the bank.
42. In a machine for aiiixing stamps or labels to packages, in combination, means for advancing the packages one by one, means for applying an adhesive to a wall of each package, means for applying a por-` tion of the label to said wall with projecting portions of the label extending on each side from the package, means for applying an adhesive to the projecting portions of the label and for extending said projecting portions along the side walls of the package, means for forming a bank of the packages with the packages arranged side by side, means for yieldingly repeatedly pressing the end portions of the labels on the packages in the bank, and means for continuously feeding the packages one by one into the bank.
43. ln a machine for axing stamps or labels to packages, in combination, means for advancing the packages one by one, means for applying an adhesive to a wall of each packa e, means for applying a portion of the la el to said wall with projecting portions of the label extending on each side from the package, means for applying an adhesive to the projecting portions ot .the label and for extending said projecting portions along the side walls of the package, means for forming a bank of the packages with the packages arranged side by side, means for yieldingly repeatedly pressing the end ortions of the labels on the packages in t e bank, and means for feeding the packages one by one into said bank, said bank-forming means including means for yieldingly resisting the advance rof the packages in the bank.
44. ln a machine for alixing stamps or labels to packages, in combination, means for applying labels to packages one by one in. succession, with the end portions of the labels projecting beyond the sides of the package, means for applying an adhesive to the projecting portions of the labels and for side by side in a bank, andwwipers extending along said receiver for repeatedly pressing the end portions of the labels of the packages in the bank.
45. In a machine for aiixing stamps or labels to packages, in combination, means for applying labels to packages one by one 1n succession, With the end portions of the labels projecting beyond the sides of the package, means for applying an adhesive to the projecting portions of the labels and for extending the projecting end portions of each label down and against the sides of each package, a receiver for thereafter collecting a plurality of the packages arranged side by side in a bank, Wipers extending along said receiver for repeatedly pressing the end portions of the labels of the packages in the bank, and means for feeding the packages one by one into the receiver.
46. In a machine for aiiixing stamps or labels to packages, in combination, means for applying labels to packages one by one in succession, with the end'portions of the labels projecting beyond the sides of the package, means for applying an adhesive to the projecting portions of the labels and for extending the projecting end portions of eachlabel down and against the sides of each package, areceiver for thereafter collecting a plurality of the packages arranged sideby side in a bank, Wipersextending along said receiver for repeatedly pressing the end portions of the labels of the packages in the bank, and means f or feeding the packages one by one intothe receiver, said receiver laving means for yieldingly resisting the movement of the packages therethrough.

In a machine for aiixing stamps or labels to packages, incombination, means for advancing one byone the packages to be labeled, means for applying an adhesive Ato a Wall of each package, means for applying a portion of the label to said Wall of each .v package with projecting end portions of 4 45 the label extending from the package, a receiver for the packages, means for moving the packages one by one into said receiver,

combination, means for advancing one by one the packages in a direction substantially parallel With the flat sides of the package,
each package, means for applying a portion of the label to said Wall of each package with extending longitudinally of said receiver for yieldingly pressing the ends of the labels against the sides of the packages in the receiver.

In a machine for alixing stamps or labels to the ends of packages having elongated end Walls, in combination, means for advancing the packages one by one in a direction lengthwise of the end Wall, means for applying an adhesive to the end Wall of the package, means for applying a portion of the label to the said end Wall of each package ,With projecting end portions of the label extending from the package, a receiver for the packages, means for moving the packages one by one into said receiver in a direction at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the end Wall of the package to form a bank of the packages With the longitudinal axes of the end Walls of the packages substantially parallel, means for applying an adhesive to the projecting portions of the labels and for extending the same down the side Walls of each package as the packages move toward said receiver, and Wipers extending longitudinally of said receiver for yieldingly pressing the ends of the labels against the sides of the packages in the receiver.

In a machine for aiixin stamps or labels to packages, in combinatlon, a magazine for holding a plurality of labels, With the foremost label exposed, means for positioning the package under the magazine, means for reciprocating the magazine to apply the middle portion of the foremost label to the adjacent Wall of the package and then Withdraw, rollers carried by said maga- Izine for engaging the end portions of the foremost label, said magazine having end supports for the'ends of said labels, levers pivotally mounted on the magazine and connected with said rollers to rotate the same, relatively fixed pins in the path of said levers as they advance with the magazine, operating to actuate said rollers to disengage the end portions of said foremost label from the end supports to force said end portions 'toward the side Walls of the package, means operating thereafter to apply an adhesive to the end portions of the label, and means for afixing the said end portions of the label to the side Walls of the package.

In a machine for aflixing stamps'or labels to the ends of packages, in combination, means for advancingl the packages along a feeding line coinciding with one of the axes of the end Wall of the package, la- A bel aflixing mechanism near the path of the package for partially aflixing a label to the end of the package, means for advancing the package alon a second feeding line substantially coinci mgwith another axis of said end wall, a curved trackway for directing the packages from one feed line to the other and for partially rotating the packages axially during transfer from one feed line to the other, and means adjacent said second feeding line for completing the aiixing of the label to the package.

In a machine for afixing stamps or labels to packages, in combination, label affixing mechanism, means for advancing the packages past the same, means for actuating said label affixing mechanism to partially aix a label to the package, means for advancin the packages along a second feeding line, la el aixing mechanism adjacent said second feeding line for completing the aiixing of the label to the package, and a mem-v ber mounted to swing to and fro about an axis for advancing the packages from said first label aixing mechanism to said last named label affixmg mechanism. y

In a machine for aixing .stamps or labels to the ends of packages each having a bead near the end of which the label is attached, comprising,pin combination, means for aflixing a portlon of the label to the end wall of the package with projecting portion of the label extendin rom the pack` age, a member for engagin the said projecting portion, and means or moving and iding the same past said bead and then inwardly and against the wall of the ackage beyond the bead to extend the sai projecting end portion along the side wall of 60. In a machine for aflixing stamps or labels to the ends vof packages, each having a bead near its end, comprising, in combination, means for afixing the middle portion of the label to the end wall of the package, with the end portions of thellabel projecting beyond the package, means for applying an adhesive to the said projecting end portions, movable lingers to engage said projectin end portions, and means for moving said ngers past said` bead and then inwardly to press the said end portions against the side walls of the package.

In a machine for aiixing stamps or labels to the ends of packages, each having a bead near its end, comprising, in combination, means for aflixing the middle portion of the label to the end wall of the package, with the end portions of the .label projecting beyond the package, means for applying an adhesive to the said projecting end portions, movable lingers to engage said proj ecting end portions, means for moving said lingers past said bead and thenv inwardly to press the said end portions against the side Walls of the ackage, and means for withdrawing said ngers.

In a machine for aixing stamps or labels to the ends of packages, each having a bead near its end, comprising, in combination, means for aflxing the middle portion of the label to theend wall of the package, with the end portions of the label projecting beyond the package, means for applying an adhesive to the said projecting end portions, movable ngers to engage said projecting end portions, means for moving said fingers past said bead and then inwardly to press the said end portions against the side walls of the package, means for withdrawing said fngers, and means for holding said fingers clear of the bead while being withdrawn.

In a machine for affixing stamps or labelsto the ends of packages, in combinawith the end portions of the label projecting beyond the ackage, a reciprocating cross- 'head movab e toward and from the package, means controlled by the crosshead for pressin the affixed portion of thelabel on the pac age, means for applying an adhesive to the end portions ofthe-label, and means actuated bythe crossheadfor extending the end 4portions Aof the label Aalong the side walls of the package.
