To oli fio/wm t may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS VVHALEY, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Stamp-Afixing Machine, fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings.
The present invention relates to stamp afiixing machines and more particularly to the type in which the stamps are removed from a suitable magazine, moistened, and applied to the envelop or other mail matter', an object of this invention being to provide a construction which will be positive in its action, insuring the proper feeding and affixing of the stamps.
Another object of the invention is to provide a construction employing a magazine adapted to contain a number of rolls of stamps, preferably of dierent denominations, such magazine being shiftable to present anyone of the rolls to the feeding devices.
Still another object is to provide a feeding device for drawing the stamps from a stamp roll to a position where they may be engaged by a device to be carried to and aflixed to an envelop.
A further object is to provide an aiiiXing device having stamp gripping means released when the stamp engages an envelop.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

According. to this invention, the stamps are mounted in the machine in any suitable manner. Preferably, a shiftable magazine is employed containing means for holding a plurality of rolls of stamps. This magazine may embody a. frame consisting of a plurality of angularly formed frame pieces 1, connected together at one end by a strip 2, and at the other end by a rod 3. These frame pieces may be guided on a pair of rods 4 which are supported at their ends by standards 5 secured to a base plate 6. Between the frame pieces 1 are mounted swinging frames 7 formed by parallel arms connected at their inner ends to tubes 8 which turn 011 the upper rod 4 between the frame pieces 1. The outer ends of the arms of the swinging frames are each provided with laterally opening bearings 9 which receive the shafts 10 of the drum 11, on which the rolls of stamps are wound. which has a projection 29 operating in the slot 24, anda projection 30 for engaging in any one ofthree openings 31 formed in the casing cover 25 for the ypurpose of locking Vthe magazine inany one of three positions. In either of these positions, one strip of stamps is heldin valinement with the receiving and aflixing mechanism, and remains so until theset-screw 27 is loosened` and the ,projection30 on the locking plate 28 is disengaged from the opening 31, whereupon the frame' pieces 1 andltlieir associated parts maybe moved along on the rods 4.
Mounted between the. arms 1, to turn on the yrod 3, are stamp guides 15 each having a slot `16 through which the stamps are threaded. Eachfguide has a pivoted frame 17 coperating therewith and provided with ariinger piece 18 by which it may be swung from the position shown in Fig. 11 to that lshown in Fig, 1, a spring19 acting on said pivoted frame 17 to hold it in the position shown inFig. .11. The frame 1 7 embodies two spaced arms which engage the stamps near'their opposite edges.

` l/Yithl the end in view of reciprogating the gripping' devices or stamp'carrier, the :frame 38 of the latter may be guided on a rod 41 which projects horizontally from the stand-- ard 34. This `frame38 may also be provided with a ring 42 which is guided upon a drum 43 secured to a shaft 44, the latter being mounted in the standard 34 and a standard 45. The drum 43 is provided with a cam groove 46 in which a pin 47 operates, the pin being loosely mounted in the frame 38 so that it acts as an anti-friction device.
In order that the gripping devices will grip and release the stamp at the proper times, there maybe provided an operator 48 pivotally mounted at 49 at its lower end to the standard 34 and having a roller 50 at its upper end to coperate with the under side of the pivoted gripping member 36. This pivoted operator 48 is engaged at 51 by a cam 52 securedl to the shaft 44 to rotate with the latter and acting tolinove the gripping membertoward the gripping member 35 as the gripping devices move toward the stamp guide to hold this: gripping position while the stamp is being drawn-to the receiving table 32, and to release* the stamp when the parts assume the position shown in Fig. 15. Y
After the stamps have been receivediipon thereceiving'table 32, they may be severed 'from the strip'by anysuitablemeanS, as a knife 53 pivoted at 54 at one side of the table and held away from cutting position by a spring 55, against the stop 56. This knife may be pressed by a projection 57 on a stamp-aifixer and carrier which removes the stamp from the-table and carries the same to the afhxing position.
The stamp aifiXer and carrier preferably embodies a plate 58 carrying stamp holding means to be hereinafter described and having a central guide member 59 and side guides 60 which operate in ahead 61 that is guided horizontally on a guide 62. The guide 62 is mounted for vertical movement and, to this end, is supported by tubular members 63 connected at their opposite ends by cross pieces 64 and 65. The tubular members op erate on cylindrical guides 66 supported in parallel relation on the base piece 6, the Y cylindrical guides being surrounded by coil springs 67 which tend normally to hold the guidesupporting frame in a raised position. The depression ofthis framemay be effected by any'suitablemeans such, for instance, as -v l `cam arms 68 extending laterally from the shaft 44 and adapted to coperate with a roller 69 journaled on a supporting plate 70 which is adjustably secured Ito the lower cross piece of the guide supporting frame.
F or the purpose of moving the head'61 on the guide'62, there is provided a mechanism comprising preferably a link 71 pivoted at 72 to the head and at 73 to a lever 74'which in turn is pivoted at 7 5to a bracket 76 secured to the under side" of the bed plate 6.
A link 77 is pivoted at 78 to the lever 74 and at 79 to the lever 80, the latter being pivoted at 81 to a bracket 82 on the under side of the bed plate 6, thelevers 74 and 80 being parallel. On the link 80, a roller 83 is arranged to operate in a cam groove 84 formed in the face of a wheel or disk 85 that is mounted on the shaft 44.
For the purpose of holding the stamps to the plate 58, the latter may carry two grippers in the form of slides 86, guided on the upper surface of the plate 58, turned downwardly at 87 and 88, so as to engage the opposite edges of a stamp lying on the table 32. These engaging portions 88 are moved away from each other beyond the edges of the plate 58 when the plate is in engagement with the stamp, this movement being effected preferably by tapered projections 89, which wedge themselves between the lugs 90 formed on the slides 86, this wedging action taking place when the plate 58 moves relativelyv to the head 61 after the engagement of the plate 58 with the receiving table 32. As the head 61 moves upwardly, it frees the slides 86 and permits the hooks 87 to move toward each other under the action of springs 91, which preferably are in the form of leaves bearing at their ends against the projections 90 and supported between their ends by plates 92 secured in recesses in the slides 86. The plates 92 and the slides 86 may be held to the plate 58 by means of securing plates 93, fastened to the guides 60.
To assist the gripping devices, the under face of the plate 58 may be formed with a central pocket 94, from which lead channels 95. This central pocket communicates with a bore 96 in the guide 59 and the upper end of the guide is provided with a tubing 97 which connects with a bore 96. A rubber tubing 98 connects with the tubing 97 and with a suction pump arranged on the base of a machine. This suction pump embodies a cylinder 99 supported on the base and having a piston 100 operating therein, the plunger 101 of this piston being forced outwardly by a spring 102 so that it maintains Contact with a cam 103 on a shaft 104. The shaft 104 extends through the cover 25 and is provided at one end with a crank handle 105, so that machine may be operated through the shaft, the latter, for this purpose, having a gear 106 thereon which meshes with a gear 107 formed on the shaft 44.
One end of the cross piece 64 and the guide 62 projects through the opening 108 formed in the casing cover 25 to one side of the table or work support 109, provided on the casing cover, so that it is possible for the stamp carrier and aiiixer to move to the outside of the casing in order to aiiix astamp on an envelop resting upon the support 109.

employed. 1n this instance, a sponge or fibrous material 110 is arranged in a tank 111, between the table 32 and the work support 109, so that the stamp has its adhesive face carried in contact with the moistener, in moving from the table 33 to the work support 109. Liquid .may be supplied to the tank 111 by means of a tubing 112 which connects with a supply tank 113 supported within the casing on a standard 114. A plunger valve 115 has a tapered end controlling the outlet 116 of the tank 113 and this valve plunger has an operating portion 117 arranged on the exterior of the casing cover 25.
1n Figs. 17 and 18, there has been illustrated a modification of the magazine. According to this modification, a standard 200 is employed secured to the base 6 and having a bearing 201 which receives the bearing 202 on the magazine or rotary carrier. The magazine or rotary carrier has three holders extending radially with reference to the axis of the magazine and each holder embodies two angular arms 203, spaced apart, and having a swinging frame 204 pivoted thereto at 205 and carrying detachable roller 206, on which the roll of stamps is arranged. A spring 207 tends to swing this roller upwardly to the position shown in Fig. 18. The stamps are led from the roll through the guided plate 208 which is pivoted at 209 and carries the pivoted clamping member 210, similar in construction to the clamping member of the other embodiment.
In Figs. 19 and 20, a modification of the stamp carryingand afiixing device is shown. This embodiment comprises a head 211 mounted like the head 58, or otherwise, and having a plurality of gripping devices 212 pivoted in pairs at 213 at opposite ends of the head and having ends 214 turned inwardly to engage the stamp on the under face of the head, and ends 215 turned inwardly on the upper face of the head and engaged by spring arms 216 which normally hold the ends 214 to engage a stamp. An abutment 217 simultaneously engages the arms 215 when the plate or head 211 yields relatively to the slide 61 and swings the ends 214 outwardly to release the stamp.
The operation of the invention is as follows: Stamps of the same or different denominations are wound'in rolls about the drums 11, the end of the strip being threaded through the opening 16 to lie flat onthe guide plate 15, beneath the spring clamp 17. One ofthe guidesl5 is alined with, the table 32 after whichthe crank handle may bel turned to operate the machine, an. en-
vel-op having previously been placed upon the work support 109'. Starting with the stamp carrying and afliXing device arranged above the table 32,y the vgrippers 35 and 36 are in a position shown in Fig. :13. These grippers move to the position shown in Fig. l5 as the stamp aiiixing device moves to occupy the position show-n in Fig. 7.' Upon the return of the grippers 35 and 36, a stamp is carried'to the table 32 while the stamp ailixing device is returned to its'posi'- tion over the table 82 and then descends until the plate 58V contacts with the stamp. A further mo-vement of the head 6l' operates the cutter 53 to sever the stamp from its strip and, at the same: tine`movesV the gripping jaw 87, outwardly. On the upward movement of the plate 58, the suction pump operates to suck the stamp againstv the plate 58 and, at the same time, the grippers 88 engage opposite edges of the stamp so that the stamp is held during the movement of the head 6l to the exterior of fthe machine. Gn the downward movement of the head 61 toward the work support 109,l the stamp is forced against the envelop as shown in Fig. 7, the plate 58 yieldingfor this purpose and causing the grippersSS to ,release the stamp, the pump vat this time also releasing the stamp.
From the foregoing, it willv be seen that there has been deviseda stamp aiiixing machine adapted Vto apply stamps ofdiflerent denominations with but ra. slight adjustment ofthe machine. The differentdenominations may be readily brought into coperation withthe stamp aiixingf device, the stamps being positively fed to a stationary table one at a time andjsevered from the strip after they reach such table. While on the table, they are firmly-grasped by the stamp afliXi'ng device before being released by. theqfeeder or carrier which places them on the table. The stamplaffixing-device carries the stamp over a moisteningdeviceto thevenvelop on which the stamp is to be affixed, the.' stamp being automatically released on such afIiXing.

In a stamp aiiixing machine, an aiiixing'device, a rollholder foi` the stamps, a means for feeding-the stamps from the roll holder to the afliXing device, and a pivotally mounted guide for the stamps compris-v ing a plate having a slot through which the stamps are passed to lie in contactwith the plate, in their travel to the alfixing device, and a movablememberv holding the stamps to the plate with yielding pressure.
7. VIn a stamp affiXing machine, an afli'X- ing device, a roll` holder for the stamps, means for feeding the stamps to the aiiiXing device from the roll holder, a pivotally mounted plate having a'slot through which the stamps are passed to lie4 in contact with the plate in their travel to the atl'xing device,landa spring clamp coperating with' the plate to hold the stamps thereto.
8. In a stamp aflixing machine, a receiving table, a roll holder for the stamps, a plate over which the stamps are caused to travel fromthe roll holder tothe receiving table, said plate having a recessed portion, a clamp ter holding the stamps to the plate having two spaced arms, reciprocating gripping means movable into the recess of the plate and betiveen the arms of the clamp to pull the stamps onto the receiving table, means for severing the stamps from the strip after they have reached the receiving table, and an aliixing device movable to carry the stamps from the receiving member to the envelopls. f
9. In a stamp aflixing machine, an aliixing device, a guide for directing stamps to said aifixing device, a swinging frame, a stamp carrying roller mounted on the frame, and a spring for moving said roller toward the guide. In a stamp aiiixing machine, an aflixing device, a pivoted guide for directing stamps to said ailixing device, a movable roller carrying frame, and a spring for moving said frame to carry the roller to the guide.
11. A stamp aflixing machine comprising a drum for supporting a roll of stamps, a movable carrier for suchdrum, a stamp guide leading from said drum, a table to which the stamps are fed from the guide, a severing device for removing a stamp from the strip While the stamp is on the table, and an aiiixing device for carrying the stamp from the table to an envelop.
12. A stamp ailixing machine comprising a receiving table, a Work support, a guide extending from the table to the Work support, and movable transversely of its length and a stamp afiixer and carrier mounted to reciprocate on said guide.y
13. A stamp aliixing machine comprising a receiving table, a Work support, a guide extending from the table to the Work support, and movable transversely of its length a stamp alixer and carrier mounted to reciprocate on said guide, and a parallel link motion for operating said aliixer and carrier.
14. A stamp atlixing machine comprising a receiving table` a Work support, a guide extending from-the table to the Work support, and movable transversely of its length a stamp aliixer and carrier mounted to reciprocate upon said guide, a link pivotally connected to said stamp aiiixer and carrier, ak pair of levers connected for parallel motion, one of said levers being connected to the link, and a rotary driving cam acting on the other lever.
15. A stamp aiifixing machine comprising a receiving table, a Work support, a guide extending from the table to the vvork support, and movable transversely of its length a stamp afiixer and carrier movable on the guide, means for reciprocating the stamp aftixer and carrier on the guide, and means for moving the guide transversely of its length toward the table and Work support when the stamp aiiixer and carrier reaches the ends of its reciprocation in order that the stamp attixer and carrier may be carried toward the table and the Work support.
16, A stamp afiixing machine comprising a receiving table, a Work support arranged substantially in the plane of the table, a guide arranged substantially parallel with the plane of the' table and Work support and movable toward and from said plane, a'
stamp aliixer and carrier movable on said guide, a rotary cam arranged on that side oi? the plane of the table opposite that on which the guide is arranged, a pair of levers connected for parallel motion and pivoted on that side of the table on which the cam is arranged, one of said levers being engaged by the cam and the other of said levers extending to the other side of the table, and a link pivotally connected to said lever and to the stamp ailixer and carrier.
17. A stamp aiiixing machine comprising a Work support, and a stamp atfixer, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the stamp aiiixer being yieldingly supported and carrying stamp retaining means for engaging opposite sides of a stamp, and a head by Which the stamp aiiixer is carried, having means for operating the stamp retaining means on the stamp ailixer on such yielding movement.
18. A stamp atiixing machine comprising a Work support and a stamp aiiixer, one of Which is movable toward and from the other, the stamp affixer being vieldingly supported and carrying a pair of gripping devices for engagement with opposite edges of the stamp, said gripping devices being controlled by such yielding movement of the stamp aiiixer.
19. A stamp aflixing machine comprising a Work support, a stamp aflixer, a head on which the stamp ailixer is yieldingly mounted, means for moving said head to- Ward and from the support, gripping devices carried by said stamp aliixer and engaged by a part on the head when the stamp aiiixer yields on the head upon cooperation with the work.
20. A stamp aiiixing machine comprising a Work support, a stamp afiixer, a head on` Which thev stamp .ahxer is yieldingly mounted, means for moving said head toward and from the support, a pair of oppositely movable gripping members mounted on the stamp atlixer, and a fixed abutment on the head arranged to coperate with both of the gripping devices to move them from gripping position to release the stamp when the aliixer cooperates with the Work.
21.
