Description

R. J. LOGAN.
TOY.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 2!. 19m.
Patented July 30, 1918.
I---- -------,II---- -'---I UNITE ROBERT JOHN LOGAN, OF ST. JOHN, NEW BRUNSWICK, CANADA.
TOY;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1918.
Application filed October 21, 1916. Serial No. 126,951.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT JOHN LOGAN, of the city of St. John, in the Province of New Brunswick, Dominion of Canada, a subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descri tion thereof.
y invention relates particularly to topspinning swords and the object of my invention is to produce a top of this nature which is of comparatively low cost, the number of parts having been reduced to a minimum.
My invention consists of a top-spinning sword the blade and handle of which are formed in the main from a single strip of tin or other suitable sheet-metal one end of the strip being bent back to form the handle and the end thereof being braced by a similar piece of metal fastened at its opposite ends to the bent-over end and the blade. This bent-over end is notched and the lower end of the brace is correspondingly notched while the blade itself and preferably the handle, are of an open V cross-section. The top consists of a stem with preferably a flat weighted body portion of disk-form.
For full comprehension, however, of my invention, reference must be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved toy;
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on line 3-3 Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 44 Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the strip from which the sword is formed.
It is desirable in toys of this nature to have them as harmless as possible yet there must be suflicient rigidity to support the top at the end of the sword when held in a substantially horizontal position. To meet these requirements 1 construct my sword from a strip 7) of substantially light-weight sheet-metal which is bent along the center in a longitudinal line to present a wide V in cross-section with rounded bottom which has the effect of imparting to it a slight rigidity. This rigidity can be increased by bending the sheet metal at a more acute angle. This is the blank from which the sword is formed.
One end of the blank is bent back to form the handle (Z the remainder of the blank constituting the blade 6 of the sword. handle is braced by a flat sheet-metal stay having one end bent as at h and soldered to the underside of the end of the handle and the opposite end of the brace is similarly bent and soldered to the up-turned edges of the blade.
This last-mentioned end of the brace has its end arranged to lie immediately beneath the end of the handle and these two ends are correspondingly notched as at 70.
This sword may be of a tinned metal, or painted or galvanized to suit requirements.
The top to be spun on this sword consists of a stem m having a weighted disk amounted rigidly thereon and the stem and disk may be finished to correspond with the sword.
In order to spin the top on the sword a piece of cord 79 is wound around the stem in the usual way; the sword being held in one hand while the opposite ends of the stem are seated in the notches Z2 and as the sword is pushed outwardly from the body with one hand the string is pulled back with the other thus spinning the top in the recessed side of the blade. The sword can be manipulated with the top spinning upon it and if desired be tilted, when the top may be caused to spin in the concaved end.
What I claim is as follows:
A toy consisting of a two-piece sword and a top constructed and arranged to be spun along the blade of the same, said sword consisting of a single strip of metal of substantially V-oross-seetion having one end bent back upon itself to constitute a handle and a brace consisting of a flat metal strip the ends of which are bent at substantially right The angles to the main length thereof and being name to this specification in the presence of secured respectively to the handle and blade, two witnesses.
the free end of the handle and the lower end of the brace being in vertical alinement with ROBERT JOHN LOGAN each other and notched to receive the top in Witnesses:
one position. HENRY S. GULVER,
In testimony whereof I have slgned my ALFRED O. BAILEY, Jr.
