Description

J. G. EHRLICH.

. Ill 1 ss I llllll INVENTOR J e706 @L'firlz'c/I By arm ATTORNEY- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH G. EHRLICH, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
.TOY.
Application filed March 9,1918. Serial No. 221,374.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPH G. EHRLICH, a citizen of the United States, resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements inv movable figures, a shaft, connecting between the wheels on which the toy is mounted, having means engageable with the lower portion of the figures whereby they are causedto oscillate or move in an amusing manner. 7
A further object is to provide toy which can be cheaply constructed and is capable of entertaining children either indoors or out. I
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure l is a side elevational view showing a toy made in accordance with the i11- vention, the figural objects being removed therefrom.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 2, and,
Fig, 4c is a perspective view indicating the arrangement of figures with respect to the toy and the method by which they are operated.
In carrying out the invention use is made of a preferably cylindrical casing 10, having an open top and a fixed bottom 11, on the center of which is a raised hub12. Jour naled transversely in this casing or frame, in advance of th center, is a shaft or axle 14, having secured on its extending ends wheels 15, held by the nuts 16 or other like fastenings.
Secured to the shaft 14, within a hollow extension 18, the outer portion of which is tangent to the exterior of the casing 10, is a sprocket Wheel 20, the teeth 21 of which are adapted to engage in openings 22, formed in a circular cover plate 23, having Specification of Letters Patent.
transverse draw bar 42,

an inner extending spindle 25, which is rigidly engaged by the pin 26, to the hub 12, formed with the casing bottom, the arrangement being such that the cover plate 23 isfreely rotatable upon avertical axis.
Jonrnaled upon the spindle 25, is. a sleeve 28, in which are formed the teeth of a worm gear 29, the same being arranged centrally of the frame 10, and adapted to be driven by engagement with a worm 30, secured to the shaft or axle 14, so that the sleeve will be rotated when the toy is causing the wheels to revolve;
hub 24, receptive a drawn along A plurality of figural toys 32, here shown to represent soldiers, are mounted upon stafis 33, having reduced stems 3-1, which pass through openings 35, in the cover plate 23,- and have engaged at their extreme lower ends bulbs 36, of suflicient weight to ordinarily maintain the figures in a vertical position, but by reason of the reduced stems 3-1, the figures are free to rotate within a certain limit and also to oscillate forming various angles with the cover 23.
Secured in the sleeve 28, areone or more spring arms 38, the same being bent so that when the sleeve is rotated, as to make contact with the weighted bulbs 36, moving them momentarily out of position and cansing the figures to assume various angles, while the weight ultimately raises the figures perpendicularly but before doing so the figures 32 will be caused to assume a variety of positions due to the oscillation imparted to them.
Attached to the walls of the casing 10, at
the front, is a bracket 40, to which is attached a curved or bent handle 41, having a at its outer end, bv.
means of which the toy may be readily I erawn over the surface.
The operation of the apparatus will be self evident from the foregoing, as it is to be seen when the apparatus is drawnover the surface, the wheels 15 arecaused to rotate, conveying rotary motion to the shaft 1 1, and through the wonn and gear, rotate the sleeve 28, bringing the spring arms 38 into contact with the several weighted. bulbs 36, so that all of the, figures disposed upon the. cover 23, are caused to oscillate and move in a' novel manner, andit is to be noted that while the cover plate or disk 23 is rotated in one direction, that the sleeve 28, is rotated in an opposite direction, so, that all of the several figures are maintained in a substantially constant moving condition while the toy is being operated.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
L In a toy, the combination with a wheeled frame, of a disk rotatably mounted on said frame, means for rotating said disk combined with the wheels of said frame, a plurality of figural objects, means for pivotally engaging said objects with said disk, weights attached to said objects extending inwardly of said frame, and means for actuating said objects, said means being operated through the axle of the wheels of said frame.
2. In a toy, the combination with a hollow circular frame having a rigid bottom and an open top, a shaft ournaled transversely in said frame, and wheels mounted upon the extremities of said shaft in the interior of said frame, of a sprocket wheel mounted on said shaft interiorly of said frame, a cover plate rotatably mounted over said frame, means formed in said cover plate engageable with the teeth of said sprocket whereby it is rotated, a sleeve mounted centrally in said' frame upon a vertical axis, a spindle engaged therewithin, said spindle supporting said cover plate, a plurality of movable figures, stems engaged at the lower ends of said figures, said stems being plvotally engaged in openings formed through said cover plate, welghts engaged at the lower ends of said stems, and arms arranged upon said sleeve, contactable with said weights whereby said figures are operated.
8. In a toy, the combination with a cylindrical casing, a pair of wheels disposed at the sides thereof and a shaft extending through said casing, upon which said wheels are IHOHIllJGCl, of a disk rotatably mounted over said casing, said disk having a plurality of spaced openings arranged adjacent to its periphery, a sprocket wheel engaged on said shaft, the teeth of said sprocket wheel engaging with the mentioned openings whereby said disk is rotated, a spindle journaled vertically in said casing upon which said disk is mounted, a plurality of figural objects on said disk, stems engaged at the lower ends of said objects, said stems passing through openings formed in said disk, weights engaged at the lower ends of said stems, a sleeve mounted upon said spindle, means for rotating said sleeve formed with said shaft, and spring arms extending outward from said spindle, said arms being adapted to make contact with said weights whereby said objects are caused to move.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
JOSEPH G. EHRLIOH.
