Description

THOMAS F. FESSENDENV.
Bugtes.`
N0.127,327.` Paen-ted May 28,1872.
PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS F. FESSENDEN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN BusTLEs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,327, dated May 28, 187'2.
To all whom it may concer-n:
Be it known,w that I, THOMAS F. FEssENnEN, of the city and county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bustles; and I do hereby declare that th'c following specification, taken in connection with the drawing making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The object of this invention is to provide a means for causing the upper portion of the bow frame-work composing the bustle to be extended outward, so that the dress will not by its weight cause the bustle to collapse at the hips to the form of the wearer.
In the drawing, A is the stay-cloth of the bustle. B B are the steel ribs which extend the clothA; C G,the covered steel bows, which give contour to the bustle, and D D, the flexible tapes, which are connected at their ends with the stay-cloth, and intermediately with the bows C, all as usually arranged.
For the purpose'of effecting my improvement I apply, in combination with the staycloth A and three or four of the uppermost bows C, springs E, which are so arranged that they act to support the bows when the weight of the wearers dress causes such bows to sag 5 and it will be most convenient to attach one end of the springs to the ribs B. 4I prefer that these springs should be made convolute, as shown, on account of the iiexibility of this form, and consequent capacity to adapt themselves to the` movements of the person; but other forms of springs which will furnish a support for the bows in the vicinity of the hips and accommodate themselves to the posture of the wearer will be within my improvement.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The elastic supports E, in combination with the stay-cloth A and bows C of an extension bustle, substantially as described, for the purposes speciied.`
THOMAS F. FESSENDEN.
