UNITED sTATEs PATENT ornion.
HENRY W. COOK, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
LEGGING.
Application filed April 15,
'1'0 all whom it may concern."
lle it known that 1, liliNRY lV. Coon, a cit izen of the llnited States of America, and resident of sy'raciiwe, in the county of Onondagzi in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in leggings and is particularly designed for and illustrated in connection with a fabric legging for army use.
The object of the invention is to provide a highly efficient, easily operable, rigid, positive, adjustable connection for a foot or instep strap in connection with a legging, permitting adaptation of the legging to shoes of various sizes, rapid and easy securenient of the legging to the foot, and the positiveretention of the legging in predetermined position with relation to the strap.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a logging constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross section on line 2-2, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is :1 view of the plate with centrally arranged stud and slots or openings upon opposite sides of the stud.
Fig. 4 is a view of the eyelet for connect ing the plate to the fabric of the legging.
Fig. is a view of a modified form of plate.
The legging as shown, comprises a fabric body -I open at one side and provided with lacing means 2 extending from top to bottom of the legging.
Near the bottom of the leggin and preferably at the closed side thereof, is secured one end -3 of a foot or ankle strap '1, the opposite end of which, in this specific embodiment. is adapted for positive, removable, adjustable engagement with the opp0- site side of the legging to provide a loop for engaging the foot of the wearer, and for this purpose the strap is provided wit-h a series of spaced openings. preferably containing eyelets 3 of rigid or semi-rigid material, as metal.
The strap 4, as shown, ma perhaps preferably be formed of two thic nesses of material, and as illustrated comprises a strip Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 16, 1918.
1913. Serial No. 228,627.
of fabric and a strip of leather secured together in any suitable way, as by stitching along their longitudinal edges.
For the purpose of effecting removable engagement of the free end of the strap with the legging, a plate-like member 6 is placed in contact with the inner surface of the lower ortion of the open side of the logging an substantially opposite the end 3 of the' strap 4.
The plate 6 is provided with a stud -7 which extends outwardly through the fabric body 1 of the legging. The plate is further provided with a pair of slots disposed upon opposite sides of the stud 7- and arranged one above the other vertically of the legging, and the fabric body is provided with openings registering with these s ots.
Eyelets -8 of suitable material, as metal, are extended through the registering openings in the fabric and the slots 9 in the plate.
Preferably these eyelets are formed with a base flange l0- and a tubular elongated or oval shaped body 11 extending at right angles thereto, the body 11 being passed inwardly through a registering open in in the fabric and slot The base flange -10-- comes in contact with the outer surface of the fabric and the inner edge of the body 1l, as extended through the slot 9 in plate 6, may be riveted or bent into contact with the. plate to constitute a permanent securing means as well as a smooth, hard, permanent surface for the passage of the strap '1.
The free end of the strap 4 is secured to the open side of the legging by passing the end outwardly from the interior of the legging through the lower eyelet Any desired one of the eyelets 5- may be brought into registration with the stud 7- and passed downwardly over the stud. by extending the free end of the strap inwardly from the exterior through the upper eyelet -8- to the interior thereof.
The connection thus made between the strap and legging is of a positive and rigid character which does not permit relative movement of the two parts. The portions of the strap within the legging prevent harmful contact of plate with the shoe of the wearer.
of the legging The connection is easily and rapidly made and is adjuslable to various siz carers. and after adjustment may he permitted to remain in permanently arranged llUtdllUlL The structure is of neat appearance a\oiding the extension of loose ends exterior of e eas n In Fig. 5 l hare illustrated a tnodilied l'orm oi stud. In this parti ular construe tiou, the stud l' 3- is provided with an enlarged head preferably of a resilient character. and in this particular illustration the enlar 'ed head. is of substantially spherieal form and is split, vertically to permit con traction'and expansion of the same.
'h en such a stud is forced through eye let -5, its removal is less ea il effected than is. the case with the plain cylindrical stud of' former figures.
It will be understood that there are many various and well-knoivn ways of producing a locl'ti' stud, as indicated in Fig. 3, and thiit the stud 12- is purely illustrative of one such construction.
Although'l' have shown and described one particular form and character of legging, I do not desire to limit myself to. the 'details of the same, asvaribus changes may be made without departing from the spirit of this invention as set' forth in the appended ela'inis.
What Ielaim is:
, l. A legging comprising a bod portion. a ')late"iii"r0ntaet with the bod) iortion, sai d plate and body portion provided with a plurality of spaped registering openings. a stud see'ured tothe plate and extending through the bod} portion intermediate salt spaced openings, eyelets passed through said registering openings and havin flanged ortions gripp ng the plate and the legging ody forsecurlng the parts together. and a strap having onee'nd secured to the legging bodr and its opposite end cXteuded successively through said eyelets and having an opening fitted over said stud.
'2. A Is ging COH'lPtiSlllg a body portion, a plate in Contact with the bodj portion, said )l'ate and body portion provided with a plurality of spaced register-in openings, a stud secured to the plate ant extending through the body portion intermediate said spaced openings, eyelets passed throu h said reg ster ng openln s and having anged portions gripping t e plate and the legging body for securing the parts together, and a strap having one end :-ettlttt| to the legging bod) and its opposite end extended successitely through .\illtl eyelets and having a series ol' openings lor selet'tite engagement with said stud.
15. .t legging toniprising a body portion, a plate, a plurality ot registering spaced openings inthe body portion and the plate, a stud carried by the plate and extending through the body portion intermediate the spaced openings, and a strap extending through said registering openings and engaged with said' stud.
t. A legging having a pair of spaced openings, a stud pos tioned between said openings, and a strap extending through said openings and engaged with said stud.
5. legging having a pair of spaced Hpenil 1gs a stud positioned between said openings, and a strap extending through said openings and rovided with an opening titted over said stud.
ti. A legging having a pair of spaced slots, eyelets in said slots'and having flanges engaging the interior and exterior, respectively; of the legging, a stud secured to the leg 'ing and positioned between said slots, :11]( a strap exteiided sucees irely through said slots and having a part engaged with said stud.
7. it legging having a pair of spaced slots, a stud having an enlarged contractile head. said stud secured to said legging and pogitioned'between said slots; and a strap extended snreessirely t l i 1 'ough said slots and having a part engaged with said stud.
R. legging eoi'nprising a fabric body portion. a plate. positioned upon the interior of said fabric body portion and having a stud ienetrating the fabric body port on and extending externally therefrom, spaced registering openings through the body portion and the plate, means for securing the plate to the body portion, and a strap l iar ing a portion extended through thespaeed registering openings and having a part en. gaged" with said stjud.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set nrv hand this Qth da oi April, 1918.
