FUSIBLE LINK.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES BnisBmE, a citizen of thejUnited States, residing at Lisbon, in the county of Ransom and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fusible Links, of which the following'is a specification.
This invention relates to links and more particularly to a fusible link of the type employed as part of a flexible connection for releasing the valves or other parts of an automatic fire extinguisher system, or for the purpose of releasing fire doors, Windows, etc., when a predetermined degree of temperature has been reached.
The object of the invention is to provide a link of the type mentioned including a pair of members having twisted ends adapted to be interlocked by a slight turning movement and secured in an interlocked position by means of solder or other fusible binding means.
Another object of the invention is to provide a link of the type mentioned including a pair of interlocking link members adapted to be secured together with suflicient firmness to withstand all necessary strain but arranged to separate quickly at a predetermined degree of temperature.
The above and other objects and advantages of this invention will be in part described and in part understood from the following description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a View of the two link members previous to assembling.
Fig. 2 is a view showing the members in interlocking position, and
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 illustrating the method of binding the interlocking members together.
As shown in the drawings, 'my improved link is composed of two separate rods or link members indicated respectively by the numerals 1 and 2. I Each of the said rods 1 and 2 has one end thereof looped and twisted in the manner shown to form an eye 3. Windows, etc.- In this connection it will be appreciated that the interlocked ends, bound together by the solder 5 will hold the two members of the link together firmly enough to withstand the necessary strain as long as the solder remains unafiected by heat. But, however, as soon as a predetermined degree of temperature is reached the solder fuses thus allowing the two link members to readily separate.
Owing to their spiral formation a slight turning movement is necessary to connect the ends of the members in the interlocking position shown in Figs. 2 and 8. When the ends of the two members have been engaged and given the slight turning movement necessary to interlock the same the solder or other fusible binding means is then applied as has been described and serves to normally prevent the link members from having the reverse turning movement necessary in separating. In this connection therefore it will be appreciated that the strain is exerted on the interlocked ends of the link members and not upon the fusible binder only in so far as the binder resists the tendency of the link members to turn and separate.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided an improved link in which the two separate link members thereof are locked together with suflicient firmness to withstand the necessary strain as long as they are prevented fro-m having the slight turning movement necessary to separate. The solder or other fusible agent forms a binder which will effectually prevent the link members from separating until a predetermined degree of temperature has been attained.
It is to be understood that I have disclosed only the preferred embodiment and that I reserve the right to make such changes in the invention as are desirable and come within the scope of the appended claims material and having an eye formed at one end, the opposite ends of the links adapted for interlocking engagement by a rotati've movement, and fusible means around said interlocking ends. 7 r r 2.
