CUFF-BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,564, dated August 23, 1898.
Application filed June 22, 1897. Serial No. 641,798. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE E. SWIFT, of Boston, (Dorchester,) in the county ofSuEolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cufi-Buttons; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in cuff-buttons, and is particularly applicable to the class of cufi-buttons in which the buttons are placed obliquely to each other.
The invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of the posts in connection with the oblique buttons, whereby the same are held in the locked position by the cuffs when in use, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a side View of a pair of cuff-buttons secured to a cuff, shown in broken lines. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional Vi0W of the same; Fig. 3, a transverse sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of the connecting link or post.
In the drawings, A and A indicate the buttons; a a, the backs of the buttons; B, the tubular post connected with the button A; C, the preferably solid post connected with the button A. The two posts B and O are connected together by a lock or stop constructed so that a partial rotation of one of the buttons will lock the posts together or separate the same. When secured together, the posts B and 0 form the connecting-link between the buttons A and A.
The locking device shown in Figs. 2 and 3 consists of the inwardly-projecting point (1, formed on the tubular post B, the longitudinal groove 6, and annular groove f, formed on the post 0. In connecting the posts the groove (2 slides over the point at until the point together.
To secure the angular position of the but tons,the ends of the posts B and O are curved at the points I) and c, where they respectively connect with the buttons A and A.
The operation of these buttons is as follows: To connect the buttons, they must be held in such relation to each other that one post can enter the other and pass the lockingpin into or through the groove e. To reach the annular groove, a partial turn of either button brings the buttons into the oblique position shown in Fig. 1 and locks them firmly together. The cufis maintain the but tons in this position and have to be compressed to turn one of the buttons so as to release the locking device.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a separable cuff-button, the combination with the button A, the tubular post B curved at the junction with the button A and provided with the inward-projecting point d, of the button A, the post curved at the junction with the button A and provided with the longitudinal groove 0, and the annular groove f; whereby the buttons are locked together when in the normal oblique position and are separated by partially turning one of the buttons, as described.
