Description
WILLIAM 'BAILEY.
Improvement in Thill-Couplin'g.
Patented May 28,1872.
Wtuzsm:
UNITED STATES .WILLIAM BAILEY, OF UTIGA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN THILL-COUPLII VGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,213,dated May 28, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in ThillOoupling, invented by WILLIAM BAILEY, of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York.
In this invention disks or boxes are applied to the ends of the pintle portion of the thilliron, and secured in corresponding cavities in the axle-iron by a' pivoted plate, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view, showing the cover over the end of the bolt raised. Fig. 2 is a top view, with the upper part removed, showing the bolt. Fig. 3 is a plan view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the thill; B, the coupling-pin. G is the cover, which is pivoted to one of the jaws, as seen in the drawing. D D represent the jaws. E is the draw-iron. The pin B is square in eross-section, and passes through one of the jaws and into the other, and through a box in each jaw, and also through the thill. These boxes are round, so that they readilyv turn in the jaws, and are marked F and G.
-As the thill is raised or lowered the boxes turn in the jaws and receive the wear. The
cover 0 is confined to the side of the jaw by the pivot H, on which it turns, and by a dovetail fastening at the end of the jaw, seen in the drawing. When the cover is closed, as seen in Fig. 2, it efi'ectually shuts in the pin and keeps it in place. When the cover is raised the pin may be removed by means of a nail or a wire inserted in the hole I in the opposite jaw but this pin cannot come outwhen the vehicle is in use, and only when the thills and the cover are in a particular position. The boxes may be readily removed or renewed,
when worn sufficiently to require it, and thusa perfect joint be secured under all circumstances.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The circular boxes F F, fitted in corresponding recesses of the jaws D D, provided with the cover 0 and the square, headless pintle B of the thill-iron all arranged as specified.
WILLIAM BAILEY.
