Be it known that I, ROBERT. L. Raor'onma citizen of the United States, residing at Asheville, in the county of Buncombe and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in lackage-Tying Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a package'tying device which is intended to be used by postal clerks when forming packages of letters and the like, although the construction of the tie is such that it may be advantageously employed in retaining other articles in package form when found desirable.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a package tie of this character having improved means of novel construction for retaining a length of cord wound about the package and with the means so constructed as to positively prevent the portions of the cord engaged therewith from becoming chafed or out.

With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter described I and particularly pointed out in the claim.

The preferred embodiment of-the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, although no restriction is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations, and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a view showing the improved tie applied to a package.

Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.

Referring now to the drawing in detail the letter A designates a package to which is shown applied theimproved tie B. The tie B includes a cord clasp holder 10 which in the preferred form of the invention is in the form of a double billed hook formed from a single length of resilient material, such as wire or the like which is flattened upon opposite sides for a portion of its length. The flattened portions of the red are folded upon themselves to provide the oppositely extending and inclined bills 11 of the hook, the flattened portions of the wire being so folded that the bills 11 lie upon opposite sides of the shank 12 of the hook and with the flat faces on the bills and the shank confronting each other.

A pair o f V-shapedcord clasps 13 which are formed from a blank of suitable material 14 are mounted to slide on the shank and bills of the liookwhicli constitutes a cord clasp holder. Each clasp 13 comprises 'a .pair of connected and oppositely inclined arms '15 which are arranged between the shank and a bill on the hook and engage the flat faces thereon. The arms 15 which are employed to grip a cord 16 adjacent its ends when wound about a package B, are provided adjacent their free ends with eX- tensions which are bent to form collars 17 through which the shank of the hook and a bill thereon are passed, thus enabling the cord clasps to be slidably retained on the book. The flattened faces on the rod from which the cord clasp holder is formed provide shoulders 18 between the ends of the shank of the hook which serve to limit the sliding movement of the cord clasps in one direction.

To apply a package tie as disclosed in the preferred form of the invention to a package a length of cord 16 is looped adja cent one end thereof and the portion passed between the arms 15 of one of the cord clamps and the cord clamp drawn toward the end of the cord clasp holder upon which the clasp is mounted, such sliding movement of the cord clasp on the cord clasp holder forcing the arms of the cord clasp toward each other and into firm engagement with the cord 16. The cord clasp holder is now placed upon the package and the cord wound thereabout and engaged between the arms of the other cord clasp 13, which is then moved by pulling upon the cord toward the end of the cord clasp holder upon which the cord clasp is mounted so that the arms on the tie from the package an end of the cord 16 .is grasped and pulled to move the cord clasp engaged therewith toward the central portion of the cord grasp holder such movement of the cord clasp allowing the arms thereof to be spread apart and release their grip upon the cord, so that the cord may be freed from the clamp and unwound from the package. 7 v

When it is desired that the cord 16 becomes a permanentpart of the package tie I provide the cord clasp holder disclosed in Fig. 5 in the drawing as in the form of a single bill hook upon which is mounted the cord clasp 13 constructed as disclosed in the preferred form of the invention. In the modified form of cord clasp holder the shank of the hook is bent to form an eye 20 to which an end of the cord 16 may be attached.

The modified form of cord clasp holder disclosed in Fig. 6 in the drawing is identical in construction with that shown in the preferred form of the invention with the exception that the arms 15 have formed clasps are mounted upon a cord clasp holder so constructed that a cord engaged with the clasp may be held wound about a package without knotting the ends of the cord and without likelihood of the cord becoming chafed or injured in its engagement with the clasps.

Havingthus described the invention what is claimed as new, is:'

In a package tie, a hook having oppositely extending and inclined bills at opposite ends of its shank, V-shaped cord clampsinterposed between said shank and bills collars on said clamps through which said shank and bills are passed, and shoulders on said shanks adjacent the free ends of said bills.
