To all whom it may concern.'
Be it, known that l, Lucius N. Di'nuM, a citizen. of the United States, residing at Vest Hartford, in the county ot' Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and linproved Firearii'i, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates iiiorc especially to the class of firearms that are iiiaiiually snpported and discharged, and an object of iny invention, :iinong others, is to provide a tirearni that shall be articular-ly siniple in its construction and c cient in its operation.
One forni of firearm embodying iny invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set ont, as .well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the aecompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 view in Side elevation, partially in central vertical section, through a lirearin embodying niy invention.

In the accompanying drawings the n11 ineral 5 indicates the handle of my impro-ved lirearin, f5 the trigger guard, 7 the trigger, e the receiver. and o the barrel, all of which parts, with the exceptions hereinafter net ed, may be of any ordinary form and may be composed of any desired material.
The barrel is provided with an extension l() that projet-Ls into the barrel opening in the receiver and in which it is held as by ineans ot' a pin 11 extending crosswise in the receiver and through a groove 12 cut across the top of the extension 10. ln assembling the parts it is very essential that the barrel shall be accurately positioned so that the pin 1l may be easily inserted, and to this end I provide a hoh.l 13 extending into the forward end ot' the recei i er 8 and which hole receives a positioning pin 11 projectinr from thethrough the receiver from side to side and the breech-bolt 1G being iiisertible in said opening` froin the side of the receiver. The breech-bolt has cheek pieces 18 that cover the rear part ot' the openingr 17 when the breech-bolt is in its closed position, and thus int-lose a rhainlair in the receiver, and said cheek pieces pass backwardly on opposite sides of the head lJ of the receiver when the breech-bolt is inoved backward. These cheek pieces may be suitably roughened to serve as grip nieiii )ers by incans of which the breechbolt inay be manually inoved backward. The breech-bolt is held in its forward position as by means ot' a spring 20 surrounding a bar 21 which is held by the pin 11 extending through a crosswise groove in said bar. The breech-bolt has an opening 22 for a tiring pin 23.
i This firing pin has an opening to receive a liring spring 2l seated in said opening and projecting thereoutof and being supported by a rod 25. The firing pin has on its lower side at the rear end thereof, guides 26 which are the projecting ends of a rib 27 extending across the bottoni of said pin at its rear part. These guides extend into grooves 28 that are formed partially by cntting away th bottom edges of 'the side parts of the cheegpieces 1S as shown in Fig. -l of the drm ings, so that the shoulders 29, created by this cutaway portion, will each form one iside of a groove and the bottoni wall 30 of the opening 17 will constitute the other side of each of said grooves.
The cut-away portions of the breech-bolt that partially form the grooves 28 is extended forwardly beyond the cheek pieces 18 and int/0 the main part 31 of said bolt to provide a housing 46 for the rib 27, this housing being of a width greater than that of said rib as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, so that when the breech-bolt is forced backward by the exploding gases and the wall 32 of the breech-bolt between the cheek pieces strikes the head 19 of the receiver, 1

A handle 40 at the other end of the safety member, serves as a means for manually rotating it, this handle having a lug 41 adapted to enter safety recesses 42--43 formed in the side of the receiver and within which recesses the lug is held partl by the spring action of the members. hen the handle is in its upper position and the lug l1 is engaged in the recess 43 that side of the safety member that is of full contour will underlie the lip 36 so that the Sear cannot be moved suffi-- ciently to disengage its point 44 from the notch 45 in the firing pin. The thread on the end of the member 38 is a right-hand thread andI if the'handle 40 be moved into its upper or safety position the member 38 will be drawn inwardlyslightly and the hold of the lug 41 in the safety recess 43 in the receiver will be increased so that it will require considerable force to disengage the handle and move it from this safety position.

I claimj 1. A firearm includingr a receiver with a breech-bolt opening therein, a breech-holt slidably mounted in said opening, said lirearm having guide grooves, a firing pin slidably mounted in the breech-bolt, and laterally projecting guides from the firing pin extendin" into said grooves.

A firearm including a receiver with a bre h-bolt opening therein comprising a cham er back of the breech-bolt, a breechbolt slidably mounted in said opening, said chamberhaving guide grooves in its walls, a firing pin slidably mounted in the breechbolt, and laterally projecting guides from the firing pin extending into said guid grooves.
3. A firearm including a receiver with a breech-bolt opening therein, a breech-bolt slidably mounted in said opening and having recesses forming portions of guide grooves, said bolt being positioned so that the bottom wall of the opening in the receiver forms walls of said grooves, a tiring pin slidably mounted in the breech-bolt and laterally projecting guides from the ring pin exten ing into said grooves.

A firearm including a receiver having an opening therein, a `breech-bolt slidably mounted in said opening and having cheek pieces with recesses in the cheek pieces forming ortions of guide grooves at the bottom e ge o f said cheek pieces, the bottomV wall of the opening 1n the receiver forming Wfalls Vof said ooves, a` slidably mounted in t e breech-bolt, and guides projecting laterally from the lower part of the firing in into said grooves.

A firearm inc uding a receiver having a breech-bolt opening therein, a breech-bolt slidablymountedy in said openin and having cheek pieces on opposite si es of the breech-bolt providin a space between said cheeklpieces and wit recesses cut into the lower edges of the facing walls' of said cheek pieces to partially form guide groom-is,V one wall of each of which grooves is formed bythe edge of said opening in the receiver, and a firing pin movably mounted in the breech-bolt and having laterally extending guides projecting into'said guide'grooves. y

A firearm including a receiver havin an opening therein, a breech-bolt slidably mounted in said opening and having recesses in its under surface forming portions of guide grooves and a housing opening out of said grooves, said bolt being so positioned that walls of the opening in the receiver forms walls of said grooves, and a firing pin slidablv mounted in the breechbolt, and having a rib extending across the bottom of the firing pin in position to enter said housing, said rib having projecting ends entering said grooves.

A firearm including a receiver with a breech-bolt opening tllorein, a breech-bolt slidabl)v mounted in said opening and havingl reressos in its lower edge forming portions of guide grooves and a housing opening out of said grooves, said bolt being positioned so that the bottom Wall of the opening in the receiver forms ,'Walls of said grooves, a firing pin slidably mounted in said breech-bolt and having a rib extending across it of a width to be completely received in said housing, and projecting guides constituting extensions from said rib, said guides extending into said guide grooves.

A firearm including a receiver with av breech-bolt opening therein, a breech-bolt slidabljv mounted in said openingT and having cheek pieces with recesses formed in the lower edges thereof facing each other and constituting portions of guide grooves and with a housing opening from said refesses into the main body of the breech-bolt, said bolt also having a hole for a firing pin, and a firing pin located in said hole and having a rib projecting into said housing and below the back edge of the breech-bolt, said rib being of a width less said housing', said breech-bolt being cutthan that of away underneath said hole so that the rib projects below,said cut-away portion inA `ed in the breech-bolt, and a rib extending across the firing pin and positioned thereon to enter said housing and having projecting ends entering said grooves.

A firearm including a receiver with a breech-bolt opening therein comprising a chamber back of said bolt, a breech-bolt slidably mounted in said opening and having cheek pieces, said chamber having grooves in its walls and a housing opening from said grooves into the body of the breech-bolt, said bolt also having an opening for a ring pin, and a firing pin located in said hole and having a rib projecting into said housing, said rib being extended with its ends projecting into said grooves.

A firearm including a receiver with a breech-bolt opening therein comprising a chamber back of the breech-bolt, a breechbolt slidablj7 mounted in said opening and having cheek pieces, said chamber having grooves in its Walls, a housing opening from said grooves and located in the body of the breech-bolt, said bolt also having a hole for a firing pin, a firing pin located in said hole and having a rib projecting into said housing and beloiv the back edge of the breechbolt, said xlib being of a Width less than that of said housing, and laterally projecting guides Yconstituting extensions from said ribs and entering said grooves.
