Description

CHARLESVA. F LESEHE. mprovement in Whip-Sockets.
N0. 127 135, I l P aten ted May 21,
CnARLns A. FLnsCnn, or New HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHIP-SOCKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,135, dated May 21, 1872.
tral section, full size; and in Fig. 3, a vertical central section of the usual construction.
This invention relates to an improvement in the socket which is attached to carriages for the purpose of carrying the whip, and especially to that class of whip-sockets which are made from wood.
The usual construction is that seen in Fig. 3. A is the body of the socket, upon the upper end of which a ring, a, is placed, inclosing a ring, (1, of thin rubber or similar material. Upon the outside upper end of the body a thread is formed by placing a threaded metal ring thereon, and over this a metal tip, B, is fitted, a flange, b, at the upper edge, clamping down onto the metal ring a to hold it in place. This construction is considerably expensive, inasmuch as the metal band B must be finished, and the fitting of the metal thread to the end of the socket in order to hold the band adds to this expense, the thin wood not being of suflicient strength to allow the cutting of the external thread.
To reduce vthe cost of construction is the object of this invention 5 and it consists in forming an internal shoulder to receive the elastic ring, and with a ring inserted upon the inside of the socket onto this first-named ring, whereby the shell of the socket and tip may be made in one and the same piece.
A is the body of the socket, formed from wood or other suitable material, having the band B at the upper end formed solid or in one and the same piece with the body of the socket, as seen in Fig. 2. Upon the inside of this socket a shoulder, f, is formed, onto which the ring a, which inoloses the edge of the elastic ring d, is placed, and above this a ring, 0, is inserted down upon the ring a to secure it in position. The ring 0 is best secured by threading, as shown, or it may be otherwise secured. Thus the whole body of the socket is made in one and the same piece and from the same material, "thus avoiding the expense of construction before referred to.
I claim as my invention- 1. As an article of manufacture, a whipsocket having the body A and neck or tip B formed in one and the same piece, with a shoulder,f, upon the inside, upon which the elastic ring d is placed and secured, substantially as described.
2. I also claim the whip-socket in a modified form, having the body made as above dc scribed, and a rubber disk placed within the groove in the socket, which may be held in place by a loose ring serrated on its upper edge and resting on the shoulders f.
