Witnesses. fmmor SAMUEL D. FORBES, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
EMPRCVEMENT IN METALLIC HUB-BANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,202, dated March 5, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAML. D. FORBES, of the city of Wilmington, in the county of New Gastle and State ot'Delaware, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic Bands for Wagon-Hubs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and true description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is not only to produce neater shape and a saving of material, but to overcome a very serious defect in devices of this kind having flanges or projections extending upon the body of the spokes, especially in hubs with staggering mortises, as will be more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is an elevation, and Fig. 2 alongitudinal section of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the ordinary wooden hub, constructed with staggering mortises. Bis a metallic band, withstaggering mortises to correspond with those in the wooden portion, the mortises in the band being made slightly larger to receive the body of the spoke, the distance upon the body of the spoke the band extends being limited to the thickness of the band. This band is made slightly tapering on its interior surface to insure a tight fit when driven or shrunk upon the wooden portion.
The very serious objection of chafing, as in the case of metallic bands having projections extending upon the body of the spokes, isentirely overcome by my improved band. This chafing is produced by the working of the wheel, and for the reason that more motion
