To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, ANTON C. MENGE and VILL'IAM H. Pirns, citizens of the United States, residing at Myrtlegrove,`in the parish v of Pl'aquemine and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boiler-Fluo Cutters,r of which the following is a specification. y
This invention relates to boiler iiue cutters and it consists in thenovel featureshereiiiafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a cutter of simple and durable structural arrangement adapted to be used for .cutting` a flue at a desired 'predetermined distance from the crown sheet of a boileigand with l this object in view the device includes a tub'e having openings at its sides and arms adjustably mounted in the tube and provided A with cutting disks which project through said openings. A wedge-shaped block is inovably mounted in the tube and may be used for spreading the arms' with relation to each other whereby the said disks will beprojected through the openings in the tube to the desired extent A flanged collar is mounted .upon the tube and may be shifted longitudinally thereof b y means of plates which are adjustably mounted on said tube. A band isattachedto the tube and provided with ratchet teethy and the ring of a wrench surrounds the said band and theteeth there# of and a spring pressed pawl which isf'carried by the wrench is adapted to engage the teeth of the band whereby the same together with the tube is turned. f f
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a top plan view of the iue cutter. y
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same taken on the .line 2-2 ofV Fig. 1
boiler Fig'. 3 is' a similar view taken on' the ylineV awa of ing. 2.
Fig. t is a transverse sectional view of the saine taken on the line lill of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
The'boiler flue cutter comprises a tube 1 which is provided at its sides with openings l2. Arms 3 are movably mounted in the tube 1. The arms 3 are provided at their inner sides with wear plates 5 which bear against the surfaces of a wedged bleek 6 slidably mounted in the tube 1. The said block 6 is provided at a point between its edge with Specification of Letters Patent.
- through the intermediate portion of Patented Ju`1y2, 19718.
a longitudinallydisposed slot 7 which re-y ceives a'bolt S, the said bolt in turn being secured'at its ends to-the opposite sides of the tube 1 and disposed transi'rerselythereof'. The said slot 7 together with the bolt 8 serve as means for, limiting the sliding movement of the wedge block 6. Springs 9 are interposed between the inner surface of the arms 3 and are under tension with a tendency to hold the wear plates 5 against the adjacent surfaces of the wedge blocked. Cutting vdisks 1Q are'carri'ed by the arms 3 and located in the openings 2 of the tube 1. The said springs 9 also serve as means for holding the vdisks 10 at inner positions in the openings 2 as best indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. A collar 11 snugly receives the tube 1 and the said collar is provided at its end ywith an annular outstanding liange 12. Plates 13 are mounted upon the end portions of the bolt 8 and secured at adjusted positions by means of nuts 14e screwthreaded upon the said bolt and. which serve inconjunction with bars 15 as means for holding the plates at adjusted positions upon the bolt 8 and against the flange 12 of the collar 11. The plates 13 are provided with longitudinally disposed slots 1G which receive the bolt 8, consequentlywhen the nuts 14 are looseiied the plates 13 may be moved upon the bolt 8 and inasmuchH as the said plates bear against the said flange, the said flange 12 may be moved away from' the bolt 8 ory adjusted with relation to the same. Then the flange 12 is at position with relation to the bolt 8, the nuts 1A are tightened whereby the said flange 12 and the vcollar 11 are secured at an adjusted position.
A band outer end of the tube 1 and is provided aroundits periphery with set'o'f ratchet teeth 18. A ring 19 is rotatably'mounted upon the band 17 and carries a spring pressed pawl 2O which engages the teeth 18. r1`he said ring 19 is furtherI provided with a handle 21. A yoke 22 is attached to the band 17 and a bolt 23 is screwthreaded the said yoke 22 and at its inner end engages the 17 is screwthreaded upon the block 6. kA hand wheel 241 is mounted upon the bolt 23 and may be used for turning the same. Arms 25 are secured at their ends tothe tube 1 by means of screws 26 best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing and the said arms sor 30. Handles 34 carry at their opposite ends rollers 27 which are located in openings 28 provided at the ,sidesy of the tube 1.
Wedges 3G are interposed between the inner edges of the arms 25 and partitions 31 which serve as guides for the wedge blockr. Screws 32 are threaded through the yoke 22 and their inner ends are journaled in cobs 33 which are screwthreaded upon the wedges are carried at'the outer ends of the screws and may be used for turning the same.
The nuts 1/1 upon the bolt 8 are loosened and thenthe plates 13 are moved whereby the collarll and theflange 12 are moved longitudinally along the tube 1. This adjustment is desirable in order to position a flange 12 at a desired distance from the cut ing disks 10. The end portion of the tube ,1 which carries the cutting disks 10 is then `An operator may then use the handle 21 as a lever whereby through the engagement of the spring-pressed pawl 20 and the teeth 18 and the bandl the tube 1 is rotated. Thus the cutting disks 10 are carried around in a line at the inner surface of the boiler flue and by continuing the operation just described the said iue is cut at a desired distance from the crown sheet ofthe boiler. During the turning movement of thetube 1 in the boiler flue the outer portions of the peripheries of the rollers 27 travel along the inner surface of the flue and they serve as means for preventing the cutting disks from entering too deeply into the boiler flue and thus wedging the device and interfering with the prompt cutting operation ofthe same.
-flange, plates By loosening the screws 25the wedges 30 may be moved longitudinally by turning the screw bolts 82 and thus the rollers 27 may be projected'more or less through the openings 28 and when they are at desired positions in the said openings they may be secured by tightening the screws 26 against the wedges 30.
F rom the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the illustration, it will be seen that a boiler uecutter of simple andv durable structural arrangement is provided and that the same may be economically and conveniently used for efficiently and effectively cutting a boiler'ue at a desired distance beyond the crown sheet of the boiler.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
1. A boiler flue cutter comprising a tube provided with openings, arms located in the tube, springs interposed between the arms and tube, a wedge-shaped member interposed between the arms, means for moving the wedge-shaped member longitudinally, cutting disks carried by the arms and located inthe openings of the tube, collar mounted upon the tube and having an outstanding mounted upon the tube and engageable with the flange to move the collar with relation to the tube and means for rotating the tube.
2. A boiler flue cutter comprising a tube providedwith openings, arms located in the tube, springs interposed between the arms and tube, cutters carried by the arms and located in the openings of the tube, a wedgeshaped block interposed between the arms and means for moving the block, a collar adjustably mounted upon the tube, means for moving the collar, a band attached to the tube having ratchet teeth and a ring` journaled on the band, and having a springpressed pawl which engages the teeth and adapted to be used as means for rotating the tube.
In testimony whereof We aiifiX our signa-` tures.
