wue/wtoz Emil QZrickson EIVIIL O. ERICKSON, OF LAKE PARK, MINNESOTA.
BOLT-CUTTER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, EMIL O. ERICKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake Park, in the county of Becker and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bolt-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for cutting pipes, bolts, or shafting, the primary object thereof being to provide a tool ofthis character which will be simple in construction, strong and durable and one which will include radial cutting elements that are adapted to be adjusted relatively as the cutting operation continues and as the diameter of the work is reduced, means being provided to operate so as to simultaneously adjust and hold all of the cut-ting elements in operative adjusted positions.
In the drawing forming a portion of this application, and in which like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :-Figure 1 is a side view of the cutter. Fig. 2 is an edge View thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing a slightly modified form of the invention. Fig. 5 is a section on line 55 of Fig. 4:.
The cutter comprises a support 1 which is preferably of circular configuration and provided with a central work receiving opening 2 and radial openings 3 whose inner ends are in communication with the work open-- ing 2 as shown.
The cutting elements 6 of the tool are preferably of rectangular configuration transversely as shown in Fig. 2, the openings 3 in the body member being correspondingly formed and adapted to receive said elements and to hold the latter against rotation as is evident. The cutting extremities 7 of the elements 6 are pointed for effective cutting engagement with the work and as shown said extremities are extended into the work opening 2 whereby to be positively presented to the work.
A combined adjusting and retaining ring 8 is mounted for circumferential movement around the body member 1, being fitted between the companion series of lugs 4: and 5 and provided with actuating extensions 9 of substantially cam formation, being provided with -inner surfaces 10 which are substantially tangentially disposed with relation to the body member and adapted to slide across and co-act with similar surfaces 11 of the Specification of Letters Patent.

slots 12 in the outer ends of the cutting ele ments 6. A screw 14 carried by the ring 8 is adapted to be engaged with the support 1, so as to hold the ring in any required adjusted position. Actuating handles 16 extend radially from the ring and are adapted to be manipulated whereby adjustment of the cutting elements 6 can be readily made through their mutual engagement with the extensions 9 of the ring. Similar handles l7 extend froln the body member 1 whereby the tool can be manually rotated upon the work.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the cutting element 17 is slidable in the radial opening 18 in a body member 19 and provided with an elongated slot 20 which receives a pin 21, the latter being secured in the walls of the opening 18 and disposed with such relation to the opposite end walls of the slot 20 as to engage the same and to thereby limit the adjustment of the cutting element and hold the element against accidental displacement from the body member. The beveled outer surface 22 of the cutting element extends into a circumferential groove 23 in the body member. The adjusting ring 24 is movable circumferentially of the body member and provided with a projection 25 which extends into the groove 23 and provided with a beveled actuating surface which is adapted to travel over the hereinbefore described surface 22 of the cutting element and thereby move the effective cutting'end of said element into the work opening of the body member. A clamping screw 26 on the adjusting band 24L is adapted to engage against the body member whereby the ring will be retained in its adjusted position.
I claim:
1. In cutting mechanism, a work receiving body portion having a central passage and radially movable cutters having their effective cutting points extending into the opening, a ring embracing the body portion. and having angularlydisposed portions movable across the cutters and operable to project the effective cutting points of said cutters into the opening when the ring is rotated in one direction, and means for holding the ring in an adjusted position.
2. In cut-ting mechanism, a work receiving member having a central opening, cutters mounted for radial movement in said member and having their effective cutting points extending into the opening, and a ring adjustable circumferentially of the member and having cutter advancing portions disposed angularly of the cutters and adapted for direct radial contact therewith and operable when the ring is rotated in one direction to advance the cutters into said opening.
3. In cutting mechanism, a work receiving body portion having a central passage and radially movable cutters having their efiective cutting points extending into the opening, a ring embracing the member and having angularlydisposed portions movable across the cutters and operable to project the effective cutting points of said cutters into the opening when the ring is rotated in one direction, means for holding the ring in an adjusted position, a manipulating portion extending radially of the ring, and means carried by the ring and adapted to engage with the member whereby to hold the latter and the ring against relative rotation.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
