Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 3, i916.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, FREDERICK G. S'ricKLns, VALENTINE M. MILLER, and Lus- Lrn iVAonnnow, citizens of the United States, residing at Mellette, in the county of Spink and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful improvements Vin lVrenches, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention has for its object to provide a wrench embodying a body, pivoted jaw and pivoted handle for adjusting the pivoted jaw.
Another object is to provide a wrench having a handle adjustable angularly relative to the body thereof.
lith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the wrench, and, Fig. 2 represents a top plan view thereof. Fig. 8 represents a fragmental detail sectional view of the locking means for the pivoted jaw.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding' parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates the body of the wrench consisting of two parallel bars secured together centrally by a pin 6 and secured at one end in spaced relation by a pin 7. The free ends of the parallel body members are formed to provide a pair of spaced relatively stationary jaws 8 having suitable teeth 9 on their working faces. Between the parallel body members 5 a relatively movable jaw 10 is pivotally secured on the pin 6 and provided with a concentric face having teeth 11 thereon. The working face 12a is preferably of angular formation, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1, provided with a plurality of teeth similar to the teeth 9.
A handle 12 is provided with an enlarged end 18 positioned between the parallel body members 5 and pivotally mounted on the pin 7. The enlarged end 13 is formed concentrically with the pivotal axis 7 of the handle, and provided with teeth adapted to mesh with the teeth 11 of the movable jaw Copies of this patent may be obtained for whereby the movable jaw is adjustable as desired, relatively to the jaw 8.
The adjustable jaw 10 is provided adjacent the teeth 11 with a plurality of recesses 15, in one of which the inner end of a pin 16 is normally retained by the tension of a spring 17. The pin 16 is provided with a head 18 whereby saidl pin may be conveniently withdrawn from the recesses 15 to adjust the jaws of the wrench as desired.
'It is frequently desirable to change the relative angular position of the body 5 and the handle 12 of the wrench, and to accomplish this the movable jaw 10 is rotated in the direction of the arrow of Fig. 1 until the teeth 11 thereof are moved out of mesh with the teeth on the enlarged end 13 of the handle. Viith the parts in this position it is apparent that the handle 12 may be moved to any position relative to the body 5 and the jaw 10 subsequently rotated to opera tively mesh the teeth of the handle and the jaw.
What we claim is in a wrench having a body member, a jaw formed on thev outer portion of said 'body member, a relatively movable jaw pivotally mounted to said body member, a handle pivotally secured to the bodymember, l
Asaid handle and movable jaw being operatively connected, said relatively movable jaw having a series of vertical recesses arranged concentrically to its pivotal axis and adjacent the inner edge thereof, said body member having a vertical aperture formed therein in alinement with said recesses, a pin slidably mounted in said aperture and adapted to engage in any one of said recesses, thereby locking said jaws.,A
means to normally hold said pin in engagement with said recesses, and a head on said pin whereby said pin can be withdrawn from engagement with said recesses thereby allowing said jaws to be adjusted.
ln testimony whereof we afiX our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
