SAW-TREATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
rammed June 22, min.
Application filed may 29, 1914. Serial No. 841,823.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE BRADY BEGG, citizen of the United States, residing at Harvey, in the parish of Jefferson andState 1% of Louisiana, have invented new and useful improvements in Saw-Treating Devices, of which the folle ving is a specification.
My present invention pertains to means for treating saws; and it contemplates the provision of an appliance, designed more especially for use on band saws constructed with a View of cutting or dlstorting the metal of the saw at the bases of the gul-.
lets or interdental spaces in such manner as to effectually prevent the splits or cracks that so frequently extend from the bases of the gullets or interdental spaces.
Other advantageous features of my invention will be fully'understood from the following description and claims when-the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the device constituting one embodiment of my invention as properly positioned on a band saw. Fig. 2 is a View of the same, taken at aright angle to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an eniarged detail diametrical section illustrating the opposed ends of the clamping members comprised in the device. Fig. 4c is a View similar to Fig. 2, showing another embodiment of my invention. Fig. 5 is a section taken in the plane indicated by the line 55 of Fig. 4, looking toward the right.
Referring by numeral to the said drawings and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 3 thereof; 1 is a band saw of conventional type. My novel device is intended for the specific purpose of preventing cracks or breaks which frequently occur at points adjacent to bottom of the gullets and in many cases render the saw worthless. I contemplate distorting the metal of the saw at the bases of the gullets 2, and in the preferred embodiment of my invention I prefer that the distortion should be in the form of a grooved portion, as illustrated in Fig. 1 and numbered 3. in this connection, I would a also say that after a saw has been treated according to my invention and the gullets are deepened incidental to sharpening of the saw, and to such a mextent as to practically out awaythe corrligated portions, then it is my purpose to again treat the saw so that new corrugated portions'will be cated at the bases of the gullets.
Among other features the embodiment of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3comprises a metallic body 4. This body 1 is provided with spaced depending walls 5 to enable it to straddle the saw 1, the wall between the walls 5 at the upper end of the space being indicated by 6 and being shown by a full line in Fig. 2 and by a dotted line in Fig. 1. For the purpose of correctly positioning the clamping members, hereinafter described, relative to the gullets of the saw, l
I employ in the bifurcation of the body a gage bar 7 designed to rest on the points of the saw teeth, after the manner illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The said gage bar is provided at 8 with an undercut projection. This projection is arranged to bear against the forward edge of a saw tooth and thereby contribute to the positioning of the clamping members and at the same time hold the device against endwise movement in one direction relative to the saw. The gage bar is backed by two screws 9 which bear .in the longitudinal central portion of the body 4 and have their lower ends disposed against the upper side of the gage bar. It will also be observed by comparison of Figs. 1 and 2 that the gage bar rests in a hanger 10, and is'adjustably secured to said hanger by a set screw 11. From this it follows that the gage bar 7 can be adjusted longitudinally of the body and adjustably fixed to adapt the device to difi'erent saws. The hanger 10 is slotted as indicated by 12 and is adjustably connected to the body 4 by a lag screw 13, this in order that the hanger 10 can be positioned according to the arrangement of the gage bar relative to the body 4. and the screws 9. Arranged in onewall 5 is one member 1 1 for clamping the saw and distorting the same. The said member 14: is in the form of a screw and is equipped with a jam nut 15, designed to hold it. against casual movement. The inner end 16 of the said clamping member or screw 1s provided with cutting edges which are preferably.
circular. Threaded through the opposite wall 5 is a clamping member 17 which is preferably in theforrn of a screw. The in per end of the said clamping member or 'screw has cuttingedges complementary to the inner end of the screw 14. It will also be noted that the member or screw 17 is provided with a hand lever 18.
In the practical operation of the embodiment described, the clamping members or screws are relatively arranged as shown to a band saw, and then the handle 18 is manipulated to turn the screw 17 inwardl When this is done the inner portion othe saw blade will be distorted at the base of a gullet and reduced to a grooved form. Subsequently to the treatment described the screw 17.1's turned outwardly and the device is moved to another gullet and actuated as stated, and the operation is repeated until the grooved portions are provided adjacent the bases of all of the gullets in the saw. The grooved portions stated may be depended on to prevent cracks that extend from the bases of the gull'ets, and from this it fol' lows that the efl'ect of my novel deviceis to materially prolong the usefulness of a band saw.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 4 and 5 i the body 4, the hanger 10*, the screws 13 and 11, and the gage bar 7 as well as the backing screw 9 are generally similar tothe corresponding elements of the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 8. In the modified construction, however, one of the screws or clamping members 14" is provided with an outer portion 2-0 of angular form in cross- "section, and a bail-shaped handle 21 is employed, the said handle having an angular aperture 22 in one of its arms to receive the portion 20, and being provided in its other arm with an aperture 23 to receive the other "clamping member or scr w 17?, and being provided further with a s t screw 2a wheremay be adjustably fixed to the screw In this latter connection it is to be noted that the outer porti 25 of the lastnamed screw is preferably, t ough not necessarily, of angular form in cross-section. By
virtue of the described arrangement of the bail shaped handle 21 relative to the screws, the handle is enabled to automatically accommodate itself to the inward and outward movements of both screws, the screw 14 being movable endwise through its complementary handle arm, c
Having describedmy invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is:
1. In a device forthe purpose described,
the combination of a body having spaced depending walled whereby it is enabled to nuance.
by one of said walls and having an inner saw-distorting end to engage one side of a saw at the base of a gullet therein, an adjustable clamping member carried by' the other wall of the body and having an inner saw-distorting end arranged to engage the opposite side of the saw in alinement with the first-named member, a ga e bar arranged in the space between said walls of the body and having an abutment arranged to be opposed to the forward ed e of a saw tooth, adjusting means mounted in the body and backing the gage bar, a hanger adjustably connected with the body and loosely receiving the gage bar, and a set screw car- Ir;ied by the hanger and engaging the gage 2. In a device for the purpose described, the combination of a body constructed and arranged to straddle the toothed edge of a saw, a member carried by the body and having an inner end adapted to be opposed to one side of a saw blade and also having annular cutting edges on said end adapted to form kerfs in one side of the blade, and an adjustable member carried by the body and. having an inner end alined with the inner end of the first-named member; the secondnamed memberalso having on its said inner end annular cutting edges adapted to form kerfs in the opposite side of the saw.
3. In a device for the piirpose described, the combination of a body "constructed and arranged to straddle the toothed edge of a saw, a member carried by the body and having an inner end adapted to be opposed to one side of the saw and also having annular cutting edges on said inner end adapted to form kerfs in the side of the'saw, a second member threaded in the body and having an inner end alined with the first named inner end and also having on its said inner end annular cutting edges adapted to form kerfs in the opposite side of the saw, and a bailshaped handle he ving in one of its arms an annular aperture loosely receiving the angular portion of the first-named member and also having its other arm secured to the second-named member.
In testimony whereotI have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing E. C. KELLY.
