A further object is to provide a gripping member which will clamp the rope with an increasing pressure proportionate to the movement of the rope in the clamp. That is. the slipping of the rope will automatically result in increasing the pressure of the clamp thereon and continue to increase such pressure if the slippage continues.
A further object is to provide a compara tively simple, inexpensive adjunct to an ordinary type of rope clamp which will render it particularly effective for the purpose designed.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawing, 2 represents a U-shaped bolt having threaded ends 3 for clamping" nuts 4. 5 is a block having sockets 6 therein wherein .the threaded ends of the U-bolt are slidable. The block 5 has upwardly projecting brackets 7 formed thereon in, pairs, with a recess 8'between them into which the ends of the rope or cable 9 to be clamped together are placed, the U-bolt straddling the cable with its threaded ends projecting through the sockets in the block. This member 11 is free to rock in its bearing on the block 10 when a strain is applied in either direction to the cableand as the center of the bearing surface 12 is a less distance from the axisof therocking member than the end portions of the surface 12, it follows that if the cable slips in the clamp and tilts the rocking member to one side orthe other, the pressure of such member on the cable will immediately increase and continue to increase if the cable continues to slip. creasing the clamping effect of the U'-bolt 1 on the cable proportionately to the strain and slippage of the cable. y The rocking member may be made in va rious sizes, according to the purpose for which the clamp is to be used, and its shape may be modified and still be within the scope of my invention.
