PATENT OFFICE.

HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,855, dated May 2, 1905.
Application filed August 14, 1903. Serial No. 169.440%.
I To a. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. SPRAGUE, of the city of Lagrange, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hooks, and refers more particularly to a form n of hook adapted to be used in connection with a wire-fence stretcher of the type embodied in the patent to E. C. Lott, No. 598,526, dated ebruary 8, 1898, and is designed to take the place of the divided clamp illustrated in Fig. 4 of that patent, adetailed description of which may be had by reference thereto.
Among the salient objects of the invention are to provide a hook of such construction as may be readily applied to or disengaged from the clamping members used in stretching woven-wire fence and the like and to provide astrong and rigid hook in which the center of draft will be in direct alinement with the transverse center of the hook.
The invention consists of the matters hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim, and will be readily understood from the description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a tretcher embodying my invention in operation. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hook, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing bhe application of the hook to the clampingars. Referring to the drawings, 1 designates as M 1. whole the stretcher attached to a post 2 by cans of the holding-chain 3. 4: 4 designate he pulling-hooks of the stretcher, shown in )perative engagement with the pulling-chain which is in turn connected to the hook 6Q 7 and 8 are the clamping members, adapted o be clamped together, one on each side of he wire fence or fabric to be stretched by leans of the bolts 9. The book 6 is then aplied to the clamping members in the manner *hown in Fig. 1 and the device is ready for peration.
The hook which constitutes my invention is composed of the longitudinal and transverse face portions 6 and 6 preferably forming two sides of a rectangle, the projecting lip 6, the longitudinal strengthening-rib 6 and the inwardly-set arm 6, the end portion of which arm is made fork shape to receive the attaching-link of the chain 5, which is secured therein by means of the bolt or rivet 10. Said hook is preferably made of one piece, open on one side, as shown, with the arm 6 of such length and so inclined as to bring the attaching-bearing thereof in direct alinement longitudinally of-the hook with the center of the engaging face 6".
The inner or engaging face of the hook is made of a size and shape to correspond with the transverse dimensions and form of the clamping-bars with which it is to be used, thus fit ting over the clamping-bars in a manner which will hold them snugly together and prevent a twisting movement of the same when the stretcher is operated.
I claim- An integral or one-piece hook for cooperation with a rectangular fence-clamp, comprising a straight longitudinal member having a flat clamp-engaging surface, a straight transverse member havinga flat clamp-engaging surface disposed at right angles to said longitudinal member and terminating in a lip having a flat clamp-engaging surface opposite to and parallel with said longitudinal member, aforked inwardly-extending arm constituting a continuation of said longitudinal member terminating in attaching means located in longitudinal alinement with the center of the transverse member, and areinforcing-rib extending longitudinally of the backs of said longitudinal and transverse members, sub stantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of August, A. D. 1903.
ARTHUR W. SPRAGUE.
