To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES J. KNOELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tonawanda, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Childrens Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates more particularly to childrens vehicles of the convertible type, and the primary object is to provide a simple structure of novel character, in which the body can be changed from the ordinary open box to a coaster structure having an elevated seat on which the child is supported, so that he can propel the vehicle by his foot.

In the embodiment illustrated, a bottom 5 is employed that is fixed to the running gear, which may be of any desired character with either wheels or runners. Thus in the disclosure, axles 6 are suitably fixed to the under side of the bottom, and have wheels 7 mounted thereon, the axles being suitably braced, as illustrated at 8, and the front axle having connected thereto a handle 9.

Fixed to the rear portion of the bottom or bed 5 are rear longitudinal side wall sections 10 connected by a rear end wall 11 that is also preferably, though not necessarily, fixed against movement on the bottom and to the side wall sections 10. The front ends of these side wall sections 10 are preferably provided with reverse substantially ogee curved terminals 12. Movable front side wall sections 13 are provided, the rear ends of these sections being curved, as illustrated at 14c, so as to interfit with the curved terminals 12 of the rear sections 10, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The front wall sections extend to the front end of the bottom or bed 5, and said sections are connected in rear of their front ends by a front end wall 15 fixed thereto. Extending forwardly from the upper edge of the front wall 15 is a reinforcing bar 16 having its front edge incurved as shown at 17, this bar being uppermost when the front wall sections 13 rest upon the bottom, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4c. The lower portions of the front side wall sections 13 are also connected by a transverse seat member 18 extending rearwardly from the front end wall 15 and resting upon the bottom or bed 5 when the wall' sections are in alinement.

The corresponding front and rear side wall sections are connected by links 19 having curved ends and pivoted respectively to the front and rear ends of said rear and front wall sections, as shown at 20. These links, as shown in Fig. 2 permit the wall sections to be placed in alinement upon the bed with their front and rear ends abutting and they also permit the front member of the body to be swung to a position over and upon the rear side wall sections with the seat 18 uppermost, as illustrated in Fig. 3, thus providing a seat upon which the child may rest and propel the vehicle with his foot in a manner well understood. It will also be noted that when the seat is elevated, as shown in Fig. 3, the links assume a slightly rearward inclination, so that the weight of the child upon the seat serves to maintain said seat against any forward sliding movement.

With the sides, as shown in Fig. 2, it will be evident that an ordinary open box is provided, and if material is placed therein, this material resting upon the inverted seat, serves to hold the front section down, and thus insures a tight joint that will prevent the passage of the material under the said front section. When changed into a coaster wagon, not only is an elevated seat provided, but the body beneath the same is still available for the reception of material.

From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A vehicle comprising running gear, a

continuous closed bottom supported thereon, front and rear wall sectlons, the rear section being fixed to the bottom and the front sec--;

tion being movable between a position on the bottom in advance of the rear section arid a position upon said rear section, and a seat carried by the front section and located across the front portion of the bottom when the front section is thereon, said sea-t being disposed in elevated position when the front wall section is upon the rear wall section.

2. A vehicle comprising running gear, a continuous closed bottom supported thereon, front and rear wall sections, the rear section being of greater length than the front section and being fixed to the bottom, and the front section being movable between a position on the bottom in advance of the rear section and a position upon said rear section and when in the latter position leaving an open portion within the rear wall section in rear of said front section, and a seat carried by the front section and movable therewith.

In a vehicle, a body comprising a bottom, rear side wall sections mounted thereupon, movable front side wall sections in advance of the rear sections, links connecting the corresponding front and rear side wall sections and permitting the former to extend in advance of the latter and to be placed thereupon, and a cross seat carried by the movable front wall sections in connecting the same.

4:. In a vehicle, a body comprising a bottom, rear side wall sections fixed to the bottom, front side wall sections removable from the bottom, links connecting the corresponding front and side wall sections, a front end wall carried by the front wall sections, a cross bar connecting the front ends of the front side wall sections, and a seat bar also connecting the front side wall sections and extending rearwardly of the front wall, said L seat bar being disposed in elevated relation when the front side wall sections are upon the rear side wall sections.
