Z 21- all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUY M. A. BLANGO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hood-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention is directed to improvements in hood holders for automobiles,
and has for its object to provide a device of this character so constructed that it will etfectuallyhold the hood sections in a partially raised positionto permit air to freely circulate within the hood to cool the engine. A further Ob]t of thGlIlVGIltlOll is to provide a device of this character so constructed that it can be easily and quickly.
attached to the radiator rod of the automobile. i
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this type which is formed from a single strip ofresilient metal so fashioned that one or both of the hood sections can be held in raised. positions.
Still another object of the invention is to produce a holder of this nature so constructed that the same will yieldably engage the interior surface of the hood sections, when in their lowered positions, and hold the same against rattling.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of *an=automobile, partly in section, showing the holder in place; one end of the holder being engaged interiorly of a section and the other holding a hood section in its raised position.
Fig. 9, is a perspective view of the device, showing the same clamped to the usual radiator rod.
The holder consists of a single strip 1 of resilient metal of suitable width and length, and is bent longitudinally into bow form, the free ends of which are turned upwardly and outwardly to provide pockets 2, which are adapted to receive the lower edges of the hood sections 3, whereby said sections may be held in raised positions.
The strip 1 is provided intermediate its ends with a loop 4: for detachably engaging the usual radiator rod 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the dra ing. Si c the hold r is Specification of Letters Patent.
formed from resilient metalthe loop a may be expanded to permit the radiator rod to sass thereinto, after which the clamping bolt 6 is manipulated to cause the loop to contract to firmly clamp the rod 5, thereby firmly holding the holder in proper position, and engaged with the hood sections 3 whether the same are raised or lowered, as shown in Fig. 1. 1
"It will be noted that the pockets 2 have their outer portions formed with extensions 7, :which yieldably' engage the inner sur faces of the hood sections 3, when said sectionsyare in their closed or lowered positions, thereby preventing any undue rattling of the sections when the automobile is in motion. I
it is of course understood that the length of the strip 1 is such that when the hood sections 3 are in their lowered positionsthe tendency of the holder. is to spring outwardly. Thus'it will be seen that the extensions will yieldably engage the respecfive sections, and hold the same against rattling.
When it is desired to cool the engine the sections 3 are raised, and the lower edges thereof are placed in the pockets 2, thus permitting air to freely circulate around the engine. These hood sections have their lower edges provided with heads 8, as is usual, and since the pockets 2 are shaped to conform with the beads, it is obvious that the sections, when engaged in the pockets will be firmly clamped therein against accidental displacement, but may be readily removed when it is desired to close the hood. In Fig. 1 of the drawing the holder is shown with one of its pockets supporting one hood section 3 in its raised position, while the other pocket is shown with its extension 7 engaged with the interior surface of the adjacent hood section to prevent rattling thereof.
If desired the bolt 6 may be dispensed with since the loop 4: is an open one, may be readily sprung upon the radiator rod, and being resilient will retain the holder in place, in an obvious manner.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a device for this purpose has been provided which is extremely simple in construction and operation, and one which can be easily attached to an automobile without marring the same. i
It is thought that the construction and Patented July 2, 191.. Application filed November 5, 1917. Sean No. 200,274.
lllllll operation, and many advantages of the herein described invention Will be apparent to those skilled in the art Without further description, and it Will be understood thatthe various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
The nu'mber of: vpocketson each end of the strip-may be varied, whereby the hood sections 3- may be held in different adjusted positions if desired, it being of course understood that the pockets will be arranged in vertical spaced relation.
- What isclaimed is:
1. =As a a new article of manufacture, a holder for automobile hood sections, consisting of a single strip of metal, means formed centrally of: the stripfor detachably engaging the radiator rod of the automobile, both ends of said strip beingfreeand'provided with pockets for. detachably engaging the lower edges of the hood sections.
2. A hood holder for automobiles comprising a strip, said strip having pockets formed upon each end for receiving the lower edges of the hoodsections, said strip serving to hold the pockets spaced relation and in elevated positions, and means carried by the strip for attaching the holder toan automo- I bile.
3. As a: .new article of manufacture, a holder for automobile hood sections, consisting of a single strip of resilient metal, said strip being disposed transversely within the automobile hood, and. having a resilient clamping loop formed between its free ends for detachably engaging the radiator rod of the automobile, and resilient pockets formed onthe free ends of the strip for detachably engaging the lower edges of the hood sections to hold the same elevated.
a. In combination Withthe radiator rod Copies otthis patent may be obtained-for of an automobile, a hood holder consisting of a single strip of resilient metal having pockets formed upon its ends for detachably engaging the lower edges of the hood sections, said strip having a loop formed centrally thereof for engaging the radiator rod,
and means for clamping the loop to the rod.
5 In combination with the radiator rod of an automobile, a hood holder consisting of a single strip of resilient metal having pockets formed upon its ends for engaging the lower edges of the hood sections to hold the same elevated, said pockets having extensions carried thereby for yieldably engaging the hood sections when the same are in their lowered positions, and a clamp carried by the strip between the pockets for detachably engaging the radiator rod.
(3. In combination with the radiator rod of an automobile, a hood holder consisting of a single length strip of metal bent intermediate its ends to provide a resilient loop for clamping engagement with the radiator rod, and pockets formed upon each end of the strip for detachably engaging the hood sections.
7. In combination with the radiator rod of an automoblie, a hood holder formed from a strip of metal having pockets upon its ends for engaging the hood sections to hold the same in raised positions, said strip being bent intermediate its ends to provide a loop for clampingly engaging the radiator rod, said loop being disposed above the plane of said pockets, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
