Description

- UN ITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOELL SMITH, OF TREMONT, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOWS;
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,110, dated May 2], 1872.
v To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, H. B. SMITH, of Tremont, in the county of Tazewell and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Plows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and. operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a side View of my plow. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of my plow. Fig. 3 is a land-side I view of the same.
The object of this invention is to simplify ,the construction of plows, and to lessen their draft by decreasing friction and otherwise; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the several parts hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, the letter A designates a mold-board, which may have the usual concave form. A represents the share, which also may be of the usual shape; B, the share-bar or land-side,a curved bar corresponding to the bend of the mold-board and share. To the upper edge of this share-bar themoldboard and share are secured. The under edge is also curved upward, and is parallel or nearly so with the upper edge. The length of the share-bar is sufficient to allow it to extend a little above the ground in. the deepest plowing. The lower or point end is forged down gradually, so that it shall be flattened from above downward, in the usual form for welding on the share. 0 represents the standard, of a curved form flattened from side to side, and having its upper and under edges parallel or nearly so. The lower end of this standard is flattened from above downward, as at z, and is curved somewhat obliquely to correspond with the bend of the share and moldboard. This bar-G therefore serves not only as a standard, but also as a connecting-strap to secure the share and mold-board together.
The position of the standard with reference to the share-bar will usually be a little in clined laterally, the mold-board and share 01 represents the connecting-strap, by means of which the mold-board and share are secured together at their rear ends. This strap has an oblique position, as shown in the drawing,
being designed to form an angle of about for-- ty-five degrees with the plow-standard. It fits closely and is secured to the under sides of the share and mold-board; and, at its up per end, is secured to the standard by the bolt d, which fastens said standard to the share-bar. It may be otherwise secured, if found desirable.
A plate, E, is sometimes used to strengthen the connection, said plate being secured to or under the end of the standard 0. Both the bar d and plate E serve as braces for the mold-board and share. B represents the colter, which consists of a smooth plate having its under edge curved to correspond with the curve of the share-bar. The upper edge is formed with a convex curve very much inclined, and extending somewhat above the inner surface of the mold-board and share. It is secured ,to the share-bar by means of countersunk screws or bolts, and is designed to present a smooth and polished surface to the land-side of the furrow. This colter is used especially with gang-plows. For the single plow I usually secure a triangular colter, such as is represented at Gr, to the beam in front of the plow.
By the above-described construction it is designed to relieve the plow from much extra and, it is thought, unnecessary draft, while its working power is not diminished. The parts are constructed with a view to lightness and strength, while no portion is allowed to come in contact with the ground, except those which are necessary to form the furrow, and In testimony that I claim the above I have to turn and pulverizc the soil, which parts are hereunto subscribed my name in the presence provided with bright surfaces and keen edges. of two witnesses.
I claim as my invention HOELL B. SMITH. The plow herein described consisting of the curved share-bar B, curved standard 0, curved Witnesses: brace d, mold-board A, share A, and land- STEPHEN STOUT, side plate B forming the colter substantially H. B. SOUTT. as specified. v a
