SYNTHETIC PATENTS ('20., INC., 0]? NEW YORK- N. Y., A CORPORATION OF To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANS WALTHER, doctor of philosophy, chemist, citizen of the German Empire, residing at Leverkusen, near Cologne, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cotton Materials with White'Efiect Threads and Proc' per cent. of Katigen brilliant green 3G.
esses of Making Them, of which the following is a specification;
I have found that in dyeing cotton piece goods with sulfurized dyestufis, silk color efl'ect threads can be protected from being dyed by treating the goods before dyeing with tanning substances which may preferably be fixed on the fiber by means oftartar emetic or formaldehyde, etc. White effects are thus obtained, especially when using mercerized cotton.
Example 1: Textile goods consisting of cotton and silk are mercerized under tension by means of a caustic soda lye of 30 B., rinsed, neutralized, laid into a bath during 12 hours which contains 5 grams of tanninaper liter of dye liquor subsequently used and then into a second bath containing 2 grams of tartar emetic per liter of dye liquor, the dye liquor subsequently used. Subsequently the fabric thus mercerized and mordanted with tannin is dyed in a bath of the following composition: 1
25 per cent. of Katigen black BFO extra. 25 per cent. of crystallized sodium sulfid.
3 grams of sodium carbonateper liter 40 grams of common salt of dye 30 grams of glue liquor.
The color efi'ect threads contained in the goods are pure white while the cotton appears dee black.

The silk threads are white while the cotton appears green. In the same way mixed goods can be .treated.
I claim 1. Process of resisting the silk in mixed goods in the operation of dyeing them with sulfurized dyestuifs, consisting in treating the goods to be dyed with tanning substances, substantially as described.
2. The process of producing silk white eflect goods dyed with sulfur colors which comprises subjecting mixed cotton and silk goods to tannin and subsequentl dyeing the goods with sulfur colors in a ath containing a metal sulfid.
3. A textile material having white effects, and comprising a mixture of cotton and silk, the latter being mordanted with tannin, the cotton only of said mixture being dyed with sulfur colors, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
