Like letters refer to like parts in each figure.
The nature of this invention relates to the construction of fastenings for doors, more especially for barn or otherlarge doors, where it is desired to secure them at top and bottom. The invention consists in a combination of three levers, two of which act as bolts, connected together by means of the third, and opera-ted from the outside of the door by means of a handle, or by cords or their equivalents, substantially as hereinaftermore fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents a pair of barn-doors hung to their posts B in the usual manner.
latches, the former engaging with a stud, or its equivalent, at the bottom of the door, secured to the sill, and the latter engaging with a similar device attached to the upper plate of the door-frame. The opposite ends of these levers pass each other at the center of the height of the door, and they should be of equal 0 and O are two leverlength and occupy the relative position to each other shown in the drawing, and should be pivoted to the door at any desired point between their ends, care, however, being taken that such pivoting-point should be at equal distance from the outer ends of said levers. The inner ends of these levers are attached together by being pivoted to the short transverse lever or connecting-rod D, as shown. Through the door opposite one of these levers is the slot E, through which passes the bandle F, the inner end of which is secured to one of the levers in such a manner that when moved laterally in one direction it engages the outer ends of the levers with the studs, as before described, thereby simultaneously securing the door both at top and bottom. Movin g the handle in the opposite direction disengages the levers, (as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1,) and allows the door to open freely.
Any other device, if thought preferable, may be employed for operating the lever-latches from the outside.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the levers O C, pivoted, as shown, with the lever or connecting-rod D, pivoted at each end only to the levers G C, handle F operating horizontally, and also giving the bolt end motion in the arc of a circle, as shown, and door A, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
