GOLLAIPSIBLE BOOK-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented (Tune 1%, 191%.
Application filed May 21, 1917. Serial No. 169,960.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NEWTON C. GAUNTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Book-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to collapsible bookholders, and the object thereof is the provision of a very simple and cheaply constructed device of this character especially designed and adapted to support an open book at a convenient inclination for reading upon a table or desk, which may be folded back out of the way when not in use and which includes securing means whereby to prevent accidental brushing or knocking of the holder from the supporting surface.
Further objects, the specific construction and the several advantages of the invention will be hereinafter pointed out in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device in book holding position.
Fig. 2 is aside elevation of the same in like position.
Fig. 3 is a view taken from above of a holder disposed upon a supporting surface and with a book held thereby.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the holder and a book with the holder folded up in book receiving or releasing position.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a pivoted clip for securing the holder to a support, the support being indicated sectionally and frag mentally.
In the specific embodiment of'the invention as illustrated the device consists essentially of a substantially rectangular designed forward book supporting frame of wire comprising side strands 1, a bottom Wire 2 angularly bent to provide a book rest 3, a top member or strand 4 formed with a rearwardly directed oflset portion 5 doubled upon itself to provide turns 5, and cross-strands 6 having depressions 7 to fit the binding of the book. The lower ends of the sides 1 and the terminals of the bottom strand 2 are secured in adjacent relation in foot members 8 having rubber caps 9 adapted to prevent slipping and marring of the surface of the supporting stand, designated as 10.
The rear supporting member is formed of upright companion wires 11 spaced apart and converging somewhat in a downward direction and connected together by an angular cross-bar or base wire 12 the terminals of the latter and lower ends of the upright wires being secured adj acently in companion foot members 13 which are preferably covered by rubber caps 141-. Intermediate of their lengths the uprights are pivotally con nected to the forward frame by loops 15 coiled about the turns 5 and from that point extend upwardly to a point where they are turned to provide right angular coils l6, thence extending downwardly at an acute angle in extensions 17 which terminate in right angular and inwardly directed coils 18 which are adapted to firmly engage and present a smooth surface to the book leaves.
The horizontal portion 12 of the crossbar 12 is adapted to be engaged by a metal spring clip 19 rotatably or pivotally secured to the desk or table top by a screw 20, a washer 21 being interposed between the desk surface and the body of the clip. By reason of the angular crank shape of the cross bar 12 the rear supporting member may be disengaged very readily by bending the member backward as the same will thereby be caused to fulcrum on the feet 13. Iteplacement is accomplished by pressing the crossbar back between the jaws of the clip. In using the device the forward frame member and the rear member pivotally connected thereto are first disposed to occupy the relative positions as indicated in Fig. 1, the rear supporting member pivoting in the retaining clip 19 and at the loop connections 15, in which positions the leaf engaging coils 18 of the extensions 7 will be moved away from and beyond the top member 4, when a book may then be freely placed on or removed from the holder without interference of the coils. It is to be noted that the rotatable or pivotally secured clip 19 allows for shifting of the holder for adjustment of the book to the light or for other purposes of convenience.
Having described my invention,I claim 1. A device of the character described, consisting of a forward book supporting frame formed of side, top, and bottom wires, the latter being provided with a book base or rest, the top wire being bent to provide an offset portion intermediate of its length and turns formed by doubling the ofi'set por-v tion upon itself, a rear supporting member formed of Wires spaced apart each being looped or coiled about one of the turns of book supported by the holder.
2. A device of the character described, consisting of a forward book supporting frame formed of side, top, and bottom wires, the latter being provided with a book base or rest, the top wire being bent to provide a rearwardly directed offset portion intermediate of its length and having turns formed in the offset portion by doubling the same upon itself, a rear supporting member formed of wires spaced apart each wire being looped or coiled about one of the said turns to provide pivotal connection between the forward and rear members of the device, and extensions of the spaced rear member wires extending upwardly, coiled to provide right angular coils, thence extending down- Wardly at an acute angle and having terminals adapted to engage the leaves of a book supported by the holder.
In testimony whereof I :t'l'lix my signature.
NEWTON C. GAUNTT.
