To @ZZ whom t may concern: i
Be it known that we, CLARENCEA. BALD- WIN and MARTIN SwENsoN, citizens ofthe United States, residing at? Bloomfield, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Calks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.V
rllhis invention relates to Mcertain improvements in calks and it iS an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which may be detachably engaged with a shoe and which is effectively maintained in applied position upon a shoe.
The invention co-nsists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved calk whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
ln order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings7 wherein- Figure 1 is a view in bottom plan of a horseshoe illustrating calks applied thereto constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; and
F ig. 4 is a fragmentary view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating a slightly modified form of our invention.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, S denotes a shoe having its inner edge 1 concave in cross-section in order to reduce to a minimum the possibility of snow adhering to the shoe and balling up. rllhe toe portion of the shoe is provided at one side of the transverse center thereof with the threaded opening 2 adapted to receive the threaded shank 3 depending from the elon gated toe calk 4, said shank 3 being positioned at one side of the longitudinal center of the calk.
The end portion of the calk remote from the' shank' 3 is provided at its base portion ,sp1ecieannofnettet;tareas`l llmatenteddnne 1d, 1919.
with the laterally directed ear provided with an'elongated4 slot @extending longitudinally `of -thecalk- The slot 6'is adapted to register with the threaded opening 7 of a diameter less thany that of the opening'2 and positionedin the toe portion of the shoe at the opposite side of the transverse center' ofthe shoe. It isl alsoto be noted that the opening 7 is offsetrelative to the opening 3 and is positioned inwardly thereof. The headed holt 8 is loosely directed through the slot 6 and adaptedforthreadedengagement with the opening 7 rlhe head 9 of the holt 8 is provided with the groove or slot 10 so that said bolt may be readily removed or applied with a screwdriver or similar implement. Through the medium of the slot 6 it will be perceived that the calk can be applied to shoes of varying sizes.
'llhe heel portion of the shoe at each side thereof is provided with a threaded opening 11 in which is adapted to be engaged the threaded shank 12 depending from the heel calk 14. The lower portion of the calk 14 is provided with the lip or tongue 15 adapted to contact with the shoe and extend longitudinally thereof and is provided with an opening 16 adapted to register with the threaded opening 19 produced in the shoe at a predetermined point inwardly of the threaded opening 11. A bolt 18 similar to the bolt 8 is loosely directed through the opening 16 and adapted for threaded engagement with the opening 19.
It is to be noted that the tongue or lip 15 of one of the heel calks extends laterally of a side face thereof while the tongue or lip of the second heel calli extends laterally from an edge thereof so that when the heel calks are in applied position, the sharpened or engaging edges thereof are substantially perpendicularly related.
lf preferred, headed screws of a conventional type may be employed in lieu of the bolts 8 and 18 as indicated at 20 in Fig. 4, and in which arrangement the outer or lower end of the coacting opening in the call; is reamed, as indicated at 21, so that the outer face of the screw will besubstantially ush with the outer face of the lip or tongue of the calk 14a.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a callr constructed in accordance with our invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inead tion, Without material departure froml the .p principles and spirit thereof, andr for'l this pensive nature and is particularly well and it will also be obvious that our invention.
is susceptible of some change and modioal reason We do not Wish tobe understoodas limiting ourselves to the precise arrangenient `and formation of the-several Aparts herein. shown. in carrying,4 out ourl invention in practice, except as hereinafter. elainiedi In' combination With al horseshoe provided with a pairo transversely spaced. threaded openings in the toe portionthereof, said openings being in oiisetrelation in; a direction longitudinallyofthe shoe, an elongated ealk provided at oneY side. of: its longitudinal Center With a depending shank insertible Within the forward opening in the toe portion ofthe shoe, the inner marginal portion of the ealk at its end portion remote from the shank being provided with a laterally directed ear, said ear having an elongated slot extending longitudinally of the calli, and a headed, member directed through the slot in the ear and in threaded engagement Wit-h the secondopening; in the toe portion of the shoe.
In. testimony whereof we hereunto affix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.v
