To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL D. KOSTENBA- DER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lehighton, in the county of Carbon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes; and I do declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to horseshoes; and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a horseshoe having removable toe and heel calks which can be quickly attached or detached from the shoe proper without the use of special tools and by a person unskilled in the use of blacksmiths tools.
Another object is to provide a horseshoe with removable toe and heel calks which can be quickly and easily removed and placed in position for use by the removal or insertion of a single bolt for each calk.
These and other objects are attained by i means of the construction illustrated in the calks removed.

Fig. A is a side view of one of the heel-calks and its locking-plate, and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the toe-calk and its locking-plate.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the body portion of the shoe, provided with a recess 2 at the toe portion thereof and a lug 3, provided with a perforation A, said lug extending backward from the recess, as shown in Fig. 1. An -oiset or shoulder 5 is provided underneath the toe portion of the shoe to engage a lug 6, formed on the base portion of the toe-calk 7. A locking-plate 8 extends outward from the toe-calk and is provided with a perforation 9, which is adapted to be broughtl into register or coincidence with the perforation 4L in the lug 3, a bolt 10 passing through both perforations and holding the toe-calk in locked position, as will be understood. The bolt 10 can be readily removed by means of an ordinary screw-driver.
The heel-calks 11 are each provided with a shank 12' and oppositely-disposedlugs 12 13, said lugs 12 being adapted to lock against a shoulder 15, formed at the rear portion of the recess for the heel-calk. A locking-plate 16 is provided with a recess 17 to accommodate the shank of the heel-calk, said locking-plate having a shoulder or abutment 18, against which the rear portion of the heel-calk is adapted to come in contact to prevent further backward movement of said heel-calk. When the heelcalk has been passed through the lockingplate and placed in position, the shank of the heel portion may be passed through the recess in the shoe and slipped backward until the perforation 19 is in register with the perforation 2O in the shoe, and a bolt or screw is then passed through said registering perforations to hold the heel-calk in place in an obvious manner. Any kind of bolts or countersunk screws may be used in holding the calks in place.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that my removable calk portion is of comparatively simple constructionand may be manufactured at slight cost. The calks may be readily removed by any person without special tools and can be readily renewed when worn with little trouble and in a very fevv moments.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described horseshoe, consisting of the body portion or shoe having a recess 2 extending through the toe portion thereof, and an undercut shoulder 5 at the front of said recess, a lug 3 extending backward from said recess on a plane below the upper surface of the body, and provided with a hole 4f, a removable toe-calk 7, having a perforated locking- SAMUEL n.
