Description

P. M. STAITZEVLL.
improvement in Dust-Protectors for Watches.
N0. 2@,908, Patented May 27,1872.
C it E q H 4 J UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER M. STATZELL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO STATZELL, ENGLEHART & ENGLEHART, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN DUST-PROTECTORS FOR WATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,908, dated May 21, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER M. STATZELL, of city and county of Philadelphiaand State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dust-Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which Figure l is an inside view of a watch having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view thereof, a portion being removed. Fig. 3 is an end view thereof. 4
My invention relates to dust-protectors of watches, and consists in mechanism for preventing the passage of dust, &c., through the opening for the post of the balance-wheel. It also consists in a plate or piece for preventing the passage of dust, 820., to the barrel.
Referring to the drawing, A represents the plate of a watch of the portion occupied by the balance-wheel. B represents the balance wheel; (J, its post or axis; 1), the cock; E, the bridge; and F, the openingin the platethrough which passes the post or axis 0, all of which may be of usual form and construction. To the plate A, near the opening F, there is an ranged the protector G, which consists of two jaws, H H, which in the present case have a common axis, a, and the eyes a of the joint move on each other. These jaws are formed of the parts J J and K K. The parts J occupy spaces surrounding the axis (J, and have semicircular openings I) b at opposite points, so that when the jaws are brought together the faces 0 0 will come in contact and the openin gs b b form a circular opening encircling the axis 0, thus completely covering the opening F, yet in no wise interfering with the free movement of the axis. To prevent the parts from grasping or binding the said axis, a small pin or stop may be arranged to limit the closing movements of the parts. The parts K consist of extensions of the parts J beyond the axis a, and constitute stops to limit the outward movements of the parts J and handles, or means for conveniently operating the aws.
l/Vhen the protector is applied, the parts J are brought together so as to close the opening F, as described, whereby dust, 850., is prevented from entering the said opening and the watch is accordingly protected. When it is desired to open the protector the parts K are pressed against or toward each other so that the parts J are caused to recede from each other, and the parts K come to astop with each other, thus limiting and stopping the out-- ward movements of the parts J, whereby other portions of the watch will not be disturbed or injured.
The barrel L of the watch is covered in part by the cock D and bridge E; but this leaves an uncovered spot at the part over which sweeps a portion of the periphery of the balance-wheel, and beneath a portion of the cock. This spot will be covered by a protector, M, which consists of a piece of elliptic form, extending from the inner end cl of the bridge E, or made separately'thereirom, and secured to the plate A. In either case this protector M lies over part of the barrel, beneath portions of the balance-wheel and cock, as at e f, and close to the portion (Z or the bridge, so that the barrel will be completely covered at top, and, by means of the other portions of the watch, ineased and protected against dust, etc.
The edge 9 of the protector M, which faces the axis of the balance-wheel, will be beveled or sloped to prevent contact with the hairspring, and the consequent interference with its free motions.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The protector G, constructed and applied, substantially as described.
2. The protector M, constructed and applied, substantially as described.
The above signed by me this 11th March, 1872.
day of P. M. STATZELL. Witnesses:
