Description
PHILIP MADSON, 0F LEMMON, SOUTH DAKOTA.
' Lock.
Speoioation of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 4, 19918..
Application tiled February 20, 1917. erial No. 149,894.
To allfwtom z't ma concern.'
Be itknown tiiat I, PHiLIr Manson, a citizen of the United States, residin at Lemmon, in the county of Perkins and tate of South Dakota, have inventedcertain useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates toa lock, and more particularly to the class of combinationlocks for use on automobiles or the like.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character wherein the operator of an automobile can with safety leave the same without possibility of unscrupulous persons actuating the switch for the circuit of the ignition system without having knowledge of the combination of the lock for the successful working thereof.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character wherein the construction thereof is novel in form to assure the opening and closing of the circuit, and the closing of said circuit cannot be efected until the combination of the lock is brown. c
A further object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and ecient in operation, strong, durable, positive in action and inexpensive in manufacture and installation.
Other objects will be in part obvious land in part hereinafter set forth.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplied in the construction hereinafter described, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claims.
1nV the accompanyingdrawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a-.lock constructed 'in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view, with the casing removed;
Fig. 3 is a vertical transversesectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1;
, Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2, with the parts shifted;
Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2 in the direction in which the arrows point. y
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the lock comprisesa casing l0, preferabl in the form of a box-like body adapted to e fixed to the dash of an automobile at the point of location of the usual circuit controlling' switch for the ignition system, and within this casing is disposed a bearing 11 supporting the combination disk 12 and the socket member 13, in which is fixed the switch blade 14, the member being preferably made from rubber, and the switch blade is formed with an operating handle 15 which projects through an arcuate shaped slot 16 formed in the front of the casing l() so that the said handle 15 is readily accessible from without to permit the manipulation of the switch blade. Interiorly of the casing 10 at one side thereof are guide ears 17 in which is slidably fitted a plunger 18 which is acted upon through the vmedium of a coiled expansion spring 19, the same bearing at (one end against the top of the casing 10 and having the other end connected to the plunger 18 for positive action thereon.
Depending from the top of the casing 10l is a bearing 20 in which is pivoted a swlnging arm 21, and pivoted to this arm is a latch bolt 22, the same working in a path of movement at right angles to the plunger 18 and is adapted for normal looking engagement with a nose or nib 23 formed on the plunger to hold the same in raised position `against the resistance of the spring 19 acting thereon.
The combination disks 12 are formed with peripheral notches 24 which are adapted to be brought into registration with each other on the proper manipulation of said disks which are manually controlled from without the casing 10 so that the registering notches will receive the protuberance 25 of a detent 26 which is pivoted to the bolt member 22 for rocking movement by a pivot 27 which is fixed in the casing 10, and working `against this detent 26 is a leaf spring 28 ,of the leafspring 29 which is fixed to the casing 10, and this spring serves to move the arm in one direction when free for movement.
Carried on the lunger 18 is an insulating block 30 to whic is connected a resilient contact 31 which has connection with one leads of the electric circuit of the ignition system, while connected with the switch blade is the other lead of said circuit, and this blade is insulated through the medium of the bearing 14`from the combination disk and their support. The blade 14 is formed with a contact 32 which is adapted for engagement by the contact 31 whenthe plunger has been freed for movement in a downward direction so that the circuit can be closed on the engagement of said contacts and when the same are Separated the circuit is opened. It will be noted that the contact 31 is normally out of the path of the contact 32 and the plunger 18 is not released until the latch bolt is moved in one direction 'when the combination disks have'been actuated for the registration of the notches 24 therein to receive the detent so that it is impossible for an unscrupulous person` to close the electric circuit by actuating the switch unless knowledge is had of the combination ofthe lock.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the herein described lock will be readily apparent and, therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
Having thus described my invention, I
3. A lock of the character described comprising a casing, a spring moved plunger within the same, combmation disks rotatably supported within the casing, a switch blade insulated from the support for the disk and manually operated, a locking bolt movably mounted within the casing and engageable with the plunger to hold the same in one position, a contact insulated from and supported by the plunger, a contact on the switch blade and always engageable by the contact on said plunger when the latter is ,moved to another position under the action of the spring, means controlled by the disks for movement of the latch bolt, means acting on the last named means to render the same operative on adjustment of the disks, said casing having an arcuate shaped slot in its front, and a handle protruded through the slot from said lswitch blade.
4. A lock of the character described comprising a casing, a spring moved plunger within the same, combination disks rotatably supported within the casing, a switch blade insulated from the support for the disk and manually operated, a locking bolt movably mounted within the casing and engageable with the plunger-to hold the same in one position a contact insulated from and supported by the plunger, a contact on the switch blade and always engageable by the contact on said plunger when the latter isV moved to another position under the action of the spring, means controlled by the disks for movement of the latch bolt, means acting on the last named means to render the same yoperative on adjustment of the disks, said casing having an arcuate shaped slot in its front, a handle protruded through the slot from said switch blade, and means for throwing the latch bolt into locking engagement with the plunger.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
' PHILIP MADSON.
