IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
VSpecification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,872, dated May 21, 1872.
SPECIFICATION. .To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA BUGKMAN, of Williarnsburg, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Automatic Window-Sash Lock; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference-being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a front-face view of my stop. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, showing the relative position of the stop when locked. Fig. 3'is a vertical cut-section` side view through its center. Fig. 4 is a vertical view of the same with the locking-bar pressed in. Fig. 5 shows an isometrical perspective view ofthe portion of the lock to be attached to the upper sash. Fig. 6 is an isometrical view of the plate to be attached to the top of the meeting-rail of the lower sash. Fig. 7 is an isometrical view of the casing of the lock, with the bar removed. Fig. 8 is an isometrical view of the bar as detached from the casing. Figs. 9, 10, and 11 show the method of construction in its different parts. My invention relates to self-acting window sash locks; and it consists in forming a frame or case (to be inserted in a portion of the upper Window-sash) of sheet metal, pressed out and struck up into proper form, ornamental or otherwise, having an attached portion cut from the back of the same, to be drawn out and tempered into a spring Vwhich works within the lock-bar; also, of a hollow locking-bar struck up from sheet-steel, pivoted in the upper portion of the case operated by the string, and having its lower or stop end roughened to take hold on a similar roughened plate secured to the lower sash, all as hereinafter more fully described.
'Ihe frame or case A is pressed out of sheet metal the proper size and shape, and at the same time cut through a portion of the plate to form the spring a, which is drawn and tempered, and bent into such a form as to act efficiently on the lock-bar B, which may be made of sheet-steel pressed out the proper size and form, and the end for forming the step b or bearing roughened at the same time, and the holes c for the pin C punched in, when the blank is placed in another die and struck up in the form of a square bar, with the ends closed, the inside being open, (like atrough,) in which the spring a operates. The frame or case A is also struck up with a die and punch, (in the form of a trough,) with the edges e c turned over at right angles to rest upon the face of the sash, into which it is fitted, and form a nish. The edges e e may be made plain gilt or plate, highly finished, or they may be embossed or chased with ornamental designs, and provided with ears, f j', on the end and sides, if desired, to fasten them firmly to the sash. A portion of the frame or case A from the pin on pivot c is covered with a plate or cap, D, which may be of thinner, lighter metal, struck up with an entablature or Irontispiece. This plate D is provided with yiianges d d to close over on the edges c e and compressed firmly t0 them.
The movement of ^the locking-bar B is adjusted by the angle h on the under side of the portion above the pivot c, so that the spring a can only pressit out to the required. position, thus obviating the usual stud or stop placed for the purpose. A roughened surface-plate, E, is secured to the lower sash ina proper position for the lock-bar B to come in contact with when the window is closed, thereby preventing the possibility of the lock-bar from tripping or being thrown back by any power applied to the sash from the outside.
The Toughened end b of the lock-bar B is made as hard as steel can be hardened, for the purpose of resisting a saw, or any tool that could be inserted between the meeting-rails of the window-sash.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The automatic window-sash lock, con sisting of the frame or case A, with spring a, the locking-bar B, pivoted at c and rougir portion of the case A when drawn out, temened at its lower or stop end, and the pered, and arranged relatively thereto, as and roughened plate E, all constructed, arranged, for the purpose described.
and operating as and for the purposes set IRA BUCKMAN. forth. Witnesses:
2. In combination with the elements of the J. B. WOODRUFF,
above, the spring a, cut from an attached A. J. B. LARKIN.
