Description

11%). ARVNAuD Improvemeni` in Combined Wash-Stand and Wr i ing-Desk.
Patented May 21, 1872.
all' f i l UNITED STATES PATENT EEIoE- JOHN J. ARNAUD, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED WASH-STANDS AND WRITING-DESKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,863, dated May 21, 1872.
SPEoIEIoATIoN.
I, JOHN J. ARNAUD, of Boston, in the coun-l ty of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Combination Wash-Stand and Writing-Desk, of which the following is a specification:
Figurel of the drawing is a vert-ical longitudinal section of4 my improved wash-stand and writing-desk, showing a front view ofthe writing-case with its lid open. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section through one end of my invention with the lid of the writing case closed.
The nature of the present invention consists in so constructing and arranging a wash-stand in combination with a writing-case and desk as to disguise the semblance of a wash-stand and produce a useful and ornamental piece of furniture that may be used without objection in a sitting-room, library, or office, and though answering the purposes of several articles of furniture will occupy the space of but In the drawing, a represents the fra-me of a wash-stand, b, the bottom of which is formed at one end with a receptacle, c, which extends below it for the admission of a pitcher, d. In the center of the bottom of the wash-stand b is an aperture, e, for the reception of a bowl, f. The other end of the wash-stand b is arranged in compartments g and h, for the purpose of holding towels and such other toilet articles as may be desired. y The frame a eX- tends upward at the back and at the rear end of the sides, and forms a top, a, on which is aflixed the bottom of a writing-case, k, which is provided on the front with a hinged lid, l, and is divided into compartments m and pigcon-holes n, vfor the reception of accounts, books, bills, &c. Hinged to the top a is a sloping lid, o, that forms the top of a writingdesk, p p, which is arranged to form a compartment, o, for the holding of paper and other stationery, &c., and which is hinged at the hack to the bottom of the lid o, so as, when locked, to open with the lid o and give access to the compartments containing the Washingutensils, Snc. The desk p is held upright, when the wash-stand is 4in use, by means of a pivoted brace, s, rabbeted on the front, which connects with the back and under side of it. Attached to the bottom of the desk p is a frame, t, containing a lookingglass, u.
Connected with the under side of the frame a are -rabbeted supports fv, in which slides a chess or draught board, fw, supplied with a stopbar, w, which abuts when pushed in against a stop-piece, y, and when drawn out is arrested by projections z, formed on the forward part ofthe bottom ofthe rabbet-ed supports t.
The dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawing show in part the operation of my invention, which is as follows: When the lid 0 is closed a desk is formed for writing upon, by opening the lid o; access is had to the compartment q by closing and locking the lid o; it is fastened to the desk p, so that when it is desired to use the washstand b the lid o, together with the desk p, is raised and held upright by the brace s, which is turned up against it, thus allowing the washing utensils to be employed without impediment, and bringing into view the looking-glass u. When the wash-stand is not de- Vsired for use the lid may be closed and all appearance of its purpose obliterated, and a neat, convenient, and useful article offurniture, suitable for an oiice, library, Sac., is presented to vlew.
The case 7c is opened by merely lifting the lid l, and may be arranged as shown, with compartments m and n, or may be divided in any way to suit the objects which it is desired to receive.
The wash-stand b may also be arranged in different compartments, and the utensils of the saine may be arranged in other positions, and in a different manner than shown inthe drawing, if desired.
Having thus fully described my improvements, what I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent, is-
The combination ofthe wash-stand b, writing-desk p, and writing-case k, arranged to form vone piece of furniture, substantially as herein described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in theprese'nce of two subscribing witnesses.
Y JOHN J. ARNAUD. Witnesses: v
